A Heat gun would of been better to soften the pvc board. Without burning the material. A+ for effort and working with what ya got! 😉👍

Yes on the heat gun. Plus one can very easily weld PVC with the hot air gun on PVC, with colored PVC welding rods. Then sand, is much stronger. But of course my hind site is 20/20. Great job.

Matt, your carpentry certainly brings a whole new meaning to your channel's name :) What a contrast to Mads over at Sail Life.... If you can, Tab,Tab,Tab everywhere you can. You can greatly stiffen up the boat and lessen (future) cabinet distortion through tabbing. Anywhere wood touches the hull, TAB! It will piss you off later after a hard sail you find your finally crafted new doors and drawers don't open.... Just my two cents and experience when it comes to older boat refits.....

When you burn or process PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) you get a gas called HCl or Hydrochloric Acid. PVC will deform around 60 degrees C or 140 degrees F. So, a powerful heat gun makes GOOD sense. Even in injection molding process temps rarely exceed 350 degrees F. Given residence (how much time spent in the barrel total) time of about 3 minutes tops. People have died from HCl poisoning when they were cutting seats from a school bus using a torch. Speaking from a retired Plastics Processing Engineer.

Like always when I watch your videos, I’m impressed with your carpentry skills and your thinking “ outside the box “, as well as Kristen’s imagination and ability to make you do things. However, the use of PVC boards might be not the right choice, as the surface is not hard enough, nor scratch resistant to be viable for use as a countertop, and an epoxy coating unfortunately will not stick to PVC, don’t even try to do this ! The only thing I can think of you can do, is glueing a laminate (Formica or similar) on top of the PVC, that will work, and you can (but don’t must) pour tabletop epoxy on top of the laminate for further protection. Happy Easter to both of you, and continue with your projects !

Happy Easter! We did a test pour over the pvc with epoxy that we had sanded and primed and it worked very well
@MrHelmuth12 жыл бұрын
@@SailingGoodBadandUgly I wouldn’t trust your test, even if sanding and priming gives you better adhesion than without , but it will not be a long lasting bond. It’s the chemistry which is not right - do it the way I suggested in order to avoid near future problems .

Nice Kitchen, nice work.. please check the MAST STEP.. that big pole that sits on a base below the flooring.. on old boats they should be inspected that the base is not wood rot or if metal its all about rusted out.. if that goes it means you could lose the mast at the worst possible time.. just have someone check it when your boat is pulled on dry dock.

Next time - You should use an electric "heat gun" to bend the PVC. Also have a damp towel to press on it where it is hot. Naked flame is going to burn it every time and also going to get you nasty fumes. Maybe others told you this - but I have not read all the comments.

Make it 3mm wider before you bend it , and then shave to the correct level, use a hand block plane. Don’t heat it to quick, just take your time. You can make almost anything with PVC board. I have been doing this for years, i am so glad you found this trick. 👍 well done.
