As we know orchids keep out growing there pots as the grow . But when your orchid starts getting really big can u leave/ is it okay to leave a orchid is a pot that its out grown ? . As one of my orchids has gotten really big and i dont really have the room to keep upping the pot size (it’s currently in like a 6L pot )

You should do an advanced series, like the beginner series, for example for your long-term subscribers, which is specific for more advanced growers, who have learned a lot over the years from you and don't need to hear the basics anymore. I'm sure Repot me would love to sponsor that series as well. 😉

Thanks! This was quite useful. I bought a Phalaenopsis from a grocery store the day after Mother’s Day two years ago for five dollars. I figured I’d get several weeks of bloom and if it lived, I’d have an orchid to learn about and some of return bloom. It’s produced new leaves and now, 11 roots came surging out! I had no idea what to do. I was worried it was a danger sign. It’s finally putting out a new flower stock and cute little buds. You’re a beginner videos are quite useful.

I should've totally watched this before cutting the roots while repotting to help recovering orchid, because earlier some of them rot and some of them died. But I definitely also cut parts of ok roots that were yellow or "snapped".

Hi Danni, thank so much for this video. As a beginner with orchids this was super informative. Understanding the root system better will aid me in keeping my orchids alive this time around and saving the ones I have that has assumingly root rot.

Thanks for sharing this. It probably explains why my vanilla orchid aerial root tip died off....I was probably keeping it's sphagnum moss-covered pole too wet.

I’m not sure if I should repot the orchid or leave it alone. Everything in me WANTS to repot it and place it deeper in the pot. What do you think? LOL

What if all the roots in the pot are dead and there are many roots outside the pot? When repotting do I put any roots inside the pot or just wait for new roots to grow from the stump?

Thank you for the video - so easy to understand and so informative. I was very concerned that my orchid is growing new air roots from the middle of the stem, 5 cm from the bottom, but I now Im just gonna let it do its thing (unless you think otherwise 😶)

I see the photosynthesis in the roots not so much as a backup but more as help for the root to feed itself so it can be free to extend as far as it wants without pulling so much sugar from the stem. Basically the plant can buy extra root growth at no extra cost by sending some equipment out there with them (the roots). Just my take, and I'm sure no expert.

Oooh that's a very interesting theory, can definitely see that! Thanks for sharing! 👍

I bought an orchid from a garden shop recently and they recommended that I did not need to repot it and that the roots were "fine" when I bought it. After a few weeks the roots are looking brown and some even black and I have not watered it at all since I bought it since the medium has not completely dried out yet. Now my question: do I need to re-pot and cut the dead roots ASAP or can I wait for the blooms to drop to repot?
@annalisamorotti36042 жыл бұрын
I would repot it 😁

Thank you so much for this information! I watered my orchids for a couple years using ice cubes (before I found your channel), and the roots are brown and stiff, almost burned-looking. Should I trim them away, or is that discoloration not a sign of root death?

I only have 5 orchards they are in my living room ,I have them in pot with in a decorative pots with bottle caps I save from water bottle so they are in the bottom of my decorative pot, so the have humidity in the bottom. They never touch the roots noe the roots are 12-to 15 inches long ,I was going to repot on larger pot and try to put some of air roots inside pot, now you say to leave atrial roots outside the pot oh boy these roots are so long for the size of the orchard what to do?

Since I didn't know about the root snapping thing, I cut majority of the once I snapped off while attempting to recuse one I bought in cocopeat mix and removing the rotting ones. I used 1:3 hydrogen peroxide and water to clean them and rinsed it off. Would my orchid be ok so far one the unopened blooms is blooming

I love your videos!! They’ve helped me so much. I do have a question for you. You often state that phalaenopsis orchids bloom in fall and winter . Why do all of my orchids bloom in spring and summer and drop their flowers in autumn? My orchids had beautiful blooms all summer and one still has a few but the rest are finished. Just very curious to know why

Hi Danni.. i've been watching for a couple years and have learned sooooo much.. i have a question , you've been using slow release fertilizer for about a year now , do you find that it is better and or more consistent than say a water mix. i have been using a slow release as well and find i have much less burn on roots and less damage due to over fertilizing.. thank you for a great channel..

Have you ever had two roots grow out of the same place (on a Phalaenopsis?) This particular one was recovering from severe root rot when these two roots grew. The velamen is starting to split and grow in separate directions. Very odd.
@newbird7772 жыл бұрын
My mother has a phalaenopsis where an aerial root split into 5 in total. it looks like a hand is reaching to grab you. Dani mentioned somewhere in this video that older roots can split and continue to grow as two.

I’m familiar with branching roots, that doesn’t appear to be what happened here. I’ve been able to see two root tips since it started growing from the base of the orchid. Maybe just a quirk where they found the same spot to push out from between the leaves? Who can say.

Most of the roots that are in the bark compound seem to be somewhat green greyish, which seems fine but the roots above the bark are pretty shriveled up. What does that mean?

Hello. I had a beautiful orchid with pretty yellow blooms and the plant lasted for quite a few months. Just recently a couple of days ago the blooms started falling and now there’s no more blooms. Is that normal for them to fall off now in July in Southern California? I kept it in my bathroom shelf and it was happy. How long do blooms usually last on a plant?
@shardlake2 жыл бұрын
Mine tend to last a month or two, first year the flower spike died off completely, I cut it back once dried put then 3 months with nothing, then I got 3 flowering spikes all grow at once, been producing flowers for over 9 months now, they do seem to have periods with no flowers, just keep going it is worth the wait :) They just seem to take a break :) Mine typically flower all throughout the year, mine are indoors Southern England so not as much sun as you get in CA
@DebTheDevastator2 жыл бұрын
How long blooms last depends on the orchid. But a few weeks is standard. Orchids bloom in fall and winter so it's completely normal for them to shed the blooms and grow another leaf.
