I would also suggest The Caligula Effect 2. While clearly a lower budget title, it is written by Tadashi Satomi and presents a great little story with some fantastic characters as well as having a pretty unique combat system.

Ah yes, the "unique combat system" that was completely mangled and destroyed, starting with the remake of the first game. The system in 2 is a sad excuse to what was there before the remake. Whereas the original combat system was player respecting and more strategic, not to mention the party members were really unique mechanics wise, it got turned into "press X to win", with half of the party members being essentially useless, because the other half is disgustingly OP. Complete opposite of how the system was originally conceived. Also, Tadashi Satomi did not write TCE2, he wrote majority of the original game, along with the director. 2 was written by the publisher's team and the director, 4 people in total. It is a disrespectful, self referential, retconning disappointment. And just because it is a budget title does not excuse it looking awkward and bad. The original game was a budget title and it looked (and played) way better. Not to mention the system itself bugs out a couple of times, precisely due to crappy programming. Turn order is also not functional either (unless you are in the win button state). The Caligula Effect 2 is a testament of how bad a game can be, if you get a team that does not understand why things were made in the first place.

YES I very much recommend the Caligula Effect 2! The first game was a heartfelt mess, had a ton of great plot points that got diluted by far too much repetitive gameplay and awkward glitchy moments. The second game loses some of the riskier plot points but produces a cleaner, more cohesive narrative with great characters that looks far better than its budget would imply!

I found the difficulty of the game a little frustrating when I tried the demo back in February, but for $15, its worth at least keeping an eye on. If nothing else, the art style is so gorgeous and the music is so nice that I almost want to buy the game just to experience that aspect.

The gameplay/combat is very buggy at times, mainly with the pathfinding? (Shout-out to the time I loaded a checkpoint in the Second Arc and just Died Horribly because my party just kept looping in place endlessly re-hitting the checkpoint. Or the time I got a memory cutscene, died in the middle of it, and then softlocked when I reloaded from the checkpoint. Despite the bugginess, I'm still really enjoying this game. It's fun! I would still reccomend.

So Reccetear on steroids? I'm in. EDIT: Just noticed the penta points symbol that is used to summon your characters is upside down. Upside down pentas are the unholy ones much like an upside down cross. I do love this attention to religious detail. Consider you work with a demon and this makes sense.

Are there any boys in this game or is the cast just a bunch of lesbians again? ... looks like another boring lesbian lead character game for the pile (all female lead characters in indie games are lesbians for some reason). Seeing a non-lesbian female lead would be fresh and new at this point in time. Im not sure who is still feeling like lesbians need to be presented more in games... can only be hardcore male gaze yuri weeb developers.
