If I can add something to this, I will say that my personal experience is very similar to yours, in the sense that I used to play quite a lot of video games, and then rather abrubtly stopped, after entering college really. I didn't even willingly quit, it's just that I had found much better things to do with my time. As I come closer and closer to finding a real job, I find myself really wishing to learn about useful things, rather than just chilling. Probably the key thing is to find a field that is so intrusting to you, that you don't even feel like it's work half of the time. Also there is always room for small improvement, and I would advise going slow and maitainable if you want to better yourself. I, for instance, now need to work on doing more exercise and taking my diet more seriously.

There is always a balance in life, just as there are people who got screwed with video games, there are the same number of people who got screwed by studies and work.

You can make video about "I can't do this but I can learn how to do this" mentality I think many people got when switching to linux

Okay, your favorite game is Outer Wilds. You're Orthodox Christian, and you make Linux content. Subscribed.

That's a matter of each person and their willpower. Video games, music, comics, books, etc. have helped me not go crazy with the screwed up life I've had. I have a job and study different courses. from time to time but gaming has helped me de-stress and meet good people and even more so because of the shitty neighborhood where I live lol

Why are these addictive things considered bad if we have fun doing them? In the end, isn't life just about being happy. Not about being accomplished, or about having a legacy, just happiness. I just keep getting happier when I keep this mindset in mind. So I keep playing video games, I keep watching KZbin, I keep drawing my "stupid" cartoons, and I keep programming cuz those things are fun for me.

I see what you’re saying, yes you can still play video games in moderation assuming you are hitting other aspects of your life. But the truth is, video games are a waste of time, the accomplishments you get in the virtual world mean literally nothing. It might not hit you now if you’re young, but when you hit 35-40 years old and you see all the people you use to know with a family, good career, money to explore the world and do whatever you want meanwhile you are working you bullshit job and living at your parents house cause you can’t afford rent and all the bills and have no real skills the. The regret will set in and it will be too late all cause you chose “happiness” over growth. When you become an adult you realize you have to put responsibility over personal happiness, that’s what separates a man from a boy.

You can find a lot of justifications and excuses. But what other hobby could make you skip sleep for months and years ? What other hobby has reward structure built-in to keep you there as much as possible? When it's comes down to online games, there's no end to it ,you get a habit when it's no longer fun and Keep doing because of the fomo. I do think situation is much better with singleplayer games, but how many gamers play only them? Less than 10%? If even that. Most of the gaming market rn is online gaming.

I can totally relate to your experience. When I started college, I made the tough decision to quit gaming. Although I spent around 1000 hours playing csgo, I realized that it wasn't really helping me achieve my goals. Sure, I enjoyed it, but in the end, it was all a waste of time. These days, I'm putting all my energy into my computer science studies and I have absolutely no regrets. I feel like I'm making real progress toward my future, and that's a much more rewarding feeling than any game could give me

Progression and creative output are the less malevolent motivators for gaming. People who are addicted to video games are mostly captured by variable ratio schedule reinforcement, the same mechanism that causes gambling addiction. Every time you load up civ 6, there's a different spawn, different tiles and different enemies to conquer. The game would only be fun once, if we had to perform the same clicks every time, because it's no longer a surprise the second time. If you have infinite chocolate, you would grow tired of chocolate. Since every good adjacency, every city conquered or every wonder completed is relatively random, our cortico-basal ganglia-thalamo-cortical loop associates reward with the memories surrounding that stimuli every single time. In nature, that's not an issue, in fact it's an advantage. You can imagine a hunter who is enthralled by everything he associates with a kill. Even the a distant smell of fresh dung makes his fingers tingle. He perfects his senses and his movements, because he just intrinsically loves doing that. A natural limit to this ceaseless motivation is only found when he can attain meat whenever he wants. He's mastered the game, it's no longer special. I think you can guess where this leads with respect to gaming. Unlike the grazing patterns of gazelles or the construction methods of bows, there is no figuring out addictive games. Either due to online matchmaking, or due to inherent randomness, the rewards remain surprising so your motivation will keep growing until you become one of those seniors incessantly mashing the button of a slot machine for hours on end.
