Hi Spirited. I always rest my locs but I didn't know that's what I was doing. I go approximately 6-9 weeks without doing anything but leaving spray conditioner and spray oil. whiler my resting period I get a good shampoo, conditioner and groom at a reputable salon that specializes in natural hair. I get my hair styled. After that I might experiment a bit more with my locs. However mostly I wrap my hair in scarves which I find at thrift stores and stores like Forever21and Joannes where you can find beautiful pieces of fabric. I have had my hair locked for over 21 years so things are going pretty well.

My mom used to tell me to rest my mouth when I was a kid. She told me my mouth was tired from all the talking I was doing. She told me that my mouth needed a nap. That my jaws needed a break. LOL. So, I know the importance of resting your hair/locs. When I was a loose natural it took me 10 years before I understood how to rest my hair. It took learning about protective styles. When I incorporated that into my hair maintenance routine, my hair grew and flourished. The less product I used, the less I was manipulating it. The less I was manipulating it, the more it grew. There is something to be said for this....It works. I am in 8 months in the loc game!

Hey girl! Love your locs! Oct actually marks 8 months loc'd for me which is crazy to think about. Feels like I just started this journey yesterday. I am very lax with my hair and rest often. I wash my hair anywhere from every 2-4 weeks. And retwist (oil only) anywhere from every 6-9 weeks. And in between that i barely style my hair. And I can tell the difference in thickness and elasticity when I'm not doing anything to my hair. Much love! 💛

I am in my 17th year of locs and have learned to leave them alone. My locs are in a resting state most of the time. I keep them clean and moisturized with minimal twisting. I wear a silk scarf when I get home from work and on the weekends. Good advice.

I realized the benefits of letting my locs rest when I had emergency surgery, and was unable to do anything but put my locs up during the day, and covering them at night. For three weeks my locs were not manipulated or washed. They felt stronger and thicker. I may not go three weeks again without washing them, but I will certainly allow them to rest. Right now I'm in a six month no-retightening zone!!! Thanks Spirit 😀

I was a loose natural up until recently. I'm starting locs now, but even as a loose natural, I rested my hair immensely or tremendously and 2 yrs after a big chop I grew 10 inches of hair which is double-strand-twisted now for locking. Girl, you're right about hair resting. Preach!

I agree 1000%. I’m so grateful that I was already on my return to natural for 7 years once I decided to get locs. During that period of time, I learned how to let go and allow myself to BE and most importantly, let my hair BE. I’m actually five months loc’d and have gone almost three months now without a retwist. It’s funny how all things I learned about myself during the beginning of my natural hair journey is resurfacing again, but at a deeper level, now that I’ve loc’d. During these three months, what I have learned is while I can go long between twisting, that my hair is at its best when it is hydrated. So every five to six days if I’m not washing, I just try and rinse my hair and give it a little drink to keep it supple and soft. ☺️ Loved this vid 💛

I've been locked for one year and I do a gentle wash whenever I feel the need. Because I'm in the desert I do require nightly moisturizing. Other than incorporating loose strands into my locked hair, I just let it be. No styles, twisting, palm rolling, coloring, jewelry - just free-style.

@@BigSpiritEnergy Peace, blessings and much respect.I look forward to supporting each other's loc journey.I do have a question,my locs are just a little shorter than yours.I like to just put it in kinda a ponytail/bun like yours but in the back.Will it affect my locs in a negative way if I just keep the ponytail in without taking it out for like a week?Or is it better to take the ponytail out,just let my locs hang and just put it back in a ponytail when I'm going out in public?I know it probably a dumb question but Its something I've really been curious about and I wanna keep my locs strong and healthy.
@BigSpiritEnergy
@BigSpiritEnergy 6 жыл бұрын
Chris Green hey so I typically remove a ponytail after a day. If it is loose enough the longest I keep it is 3 days. I definitely would not recommend keeping in a tight pony tail or be sure to loosen the band by undoing one loop of the rubberband. If the pony tail is loose and the hair is more so sitting back rather than being pulled back 3-4 days is fine.

REST is vital for hair! I too dont manipulate my locs alot, I no longer get retwist once a month, I only separate the roots when I wash it . I only lightly oil the ends and use aloe vera spray on the roots...my locs are growing fast!😊 I also dont pull it up in all those crazy styles or tie it down at night, I sleep on a satin pillowcase. Simplicity is easier and best for my hair.😊 I also hate retwists because it makes my hair always looks thin at the roots....I prefer the thicker fuller look

I've been tenderheaded since I was born!😫 I've been locd for 14 months. I almost gave up on my journey because those clips hurt my head sooo much, my scalp would be sore for a couple of days after professional retwist! It's been about 4 months since I've had it retwisted by my loctian but my hair is strong and healthy. Its probably long enough for a ponytail or updo but I cant stand any tightness, so I just put it up by only putting the rubber band around it ONE TIME (no twisting) and if I have some locs that are a little shorter, I use small Bobby pins to keep them up.
