Zack, I really appreciate all the tips you have thrown out there brother. I don't do roofing all the time but I do love it. I'm a self employed carpenter in Pittsburgh PA area and I'm starting another roof tomorrow morning. This just got me pumped. Thanks for the encouragement. We have been under tarps all winter and I can only hope that before I get started I will find a guy that does it to help me so to do as good as you show it. @frankish53143 жыл бұрын
@@NWIVeteranConstruction Yes and the other thing I did was to mark the cut lines on my cutting board (6 inch and 11 inch it said on the shingle pack). So I could throw the shingle on the board and line up the left edge and I had the exact cut point. prolly overkill but I felt better.

i used to pre cut them using my knife as to gage it. knife plus an inch gets you about the perfect size stair step. only reason i cut them in place now is because it keeps the rake edge straighter because i put 3 full length shingles on top of each other so i have a longer line, a lot of guys have crooked ends because the pre cut and need to put on 5 shorter pieces but i definitely don't suggest doing it my way if you don't trust yourself

No harness, no rope, it's guys like this that ruin the reps of other roofers. Especially when your doing all your cuts on the inside where it's supposed to be factory edges. I watched a few of this guys vids and man o man would the company who manufactures the shingles have a field day not warrantying his roof jobs, workmanship would but manufactures warranty would be void for sure. I seen him a few times in his vids where his nails ain't in the line. Your not fast unless you do it right 100% Including the safety parts of roofing, harness and rope wether its 3/12 or 12/12. I can't wait to post some vids.
@NWIVeteranConstruction5 ай бұрын
Can't wait to post videos lol that's what they all say. Send me one time stamp where my nail isn't in the line! It doesn't exist, I'm major on quality. Every single nail is in the common bond. At most 1 per shingle might be slightly high but that's why I 5 nail instead of 4 nail (which my area requires). Also, are you claiming that non factory seems void a warranty on a roof? Because I can assure you they don't! I can name at least 2 different scenarios off the top of my head, where non factory seems are a must, in order to preserve the best quality for the roof. If it's aloud in those scenarios, it's aloud anywhere as long as it's done correctly. My cuts are straight enough that you can't tell it's been cut. Shingle aren't like siding or flooring rookie. There's no connecting edge, therefore, you can do a better job by not being force fed factory connections. Obviously I do them where it makes sense to. But I'm also not going to do anything that is nonsensical, like waste time trying to keep factory to factory on a starting edge where it doesn't make a difference

Just because the big box stores say a hook blade is a "roofers blade" doesn't mean you have to use it for everything. I use a straight blade and don't risk cutting the under shingle. The next shingle is already upside down ready to cut with a straight blade on the back side. Straight blades are cheaper too.
