** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
Today's sudoku has been recommended to us LOTS of time over the last few weeks. It's by Math Pesto and it's called Framed. It's staggering how symmetrical the set-up is and it has a beautiful solve path. See if you can find it!
You can try it at the link below:
app.crackingth...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Digits in a circle appear at least once in the four surrounding cells. Adjacent digits on a green line differ by at least 5. Any set of three sequential cells on an orange line contains a low digit (123), a middle digit (456) and a high digit (789). Digits on a purple line form a set of non-repeating consecutive numbers (which can appear in any order).

it took me ages to realise that the 45s around the 4 clue could be the same. I thought I'd broken something. So I started watching the video, with my almost complete solve visible so I could see what I'd done wrong... and I hadn't! Simon kept using the same logic I had! So when he said he was starting to worry about the 4s and 5s, I paused the video before he tackled them, and I had another look. I very quickly realized that they did indeed both have to be the same, and thus finished without actual help (other than confirming I hadn't yet made a mistake). 68:44 for me. But I'm pretty proud I actually completed it.

This happens to me so often as well! I get stuck, watch the video, and get an idea how to proceed before they even get close to the problem i was stuck on. Feels so good to not actually have needed the help.

That ending was truly impressive from a setter's standpoint. Getting the entire puzzle to be solved EXCEPT for every single 4 and 5 is incredible.
@blahfasel2000
@blahfasel2000 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think that was the intention of the setter at all, Simon just didn't notice the significance of the 4 in the circle at around 45:24. At that point the 4/5s in boxes 4 and 7 can be resolved with a good chunk of the grid still empty, because putting a 4 in r7c3 would put a 4 in r6c2 which would break the circle.

@KalOrtPor
@KalOrtPor 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheSpazattack540 I think it was intended too because picking r7c3 just ends up proving r6c2 is the same digit to note their effect on another box, versus just starting with that box directly to prove r7c7 is the same as r6c6 which ends up being the same idea.....Granted starting with r7c3 saves a couple steps, but at that point the puzzle is nearly done and most of the empty grid are write-ins. You end up with the whole rest of the puzzle solved but not a single 4 or 5, unraveled by a single circled 4 clue. The remaining 4-5 pairs telegraphs to the solver what they need to do next, I can't imagine the setter not being aware of it just because it can be accomplished slightly earlier.

Actually, it does help figure out where 5 goes in box 7 at the very end of sooner, which unravels the rest of the puzzle, no coloring needed. If 5 went on the purple line then the 4s in box 7 and box 4 would break the quadruple with the 4.

I did in 27:37. For a Simon's solve of 50 minutes, I was incredible fast, now I'm thinking that probably made a lucky guess somewhere haha. I decided to watch the video to find my mistake and discovered that it wasn't me who was fast, but Simon was a bit slow: what he find out at 20:19, was my first step and after the puzzle really flowed smoothlly. Honestly, I though Simon said "Aahhh!" more than 5 times per video on average ;) especially on those "ah!" moments that may occur a few times, you know those "Aah!" with raised index, then 5 seconds total freeze, then "Ah!", pause, "Rrrriiight...". And of course, not only this does not bother me at all, that's part of Simon. That wouldn't be Simon without that ;)

I love this channel! I also love that I've been able to solve more and more puzzles lately on my own. The reason for my comment though: I was able to solve it. And of course I used the 45 coloring at the end to get to the disambiguation. I didn't realize what it would be at first (I actually started the coloring by noticing that the 45 pair on the entropy line from box 2-3-6 had to be different, coloring those two first, and even thinking maybe that would be part of the disambiguation). But then I noticed the 45 on the circle and realized that was going to be it, and that they'd have to be the same to solve the puzzle. I love that Simon realized he knew what would happen before starting coloring. Thank you so much for all the time you put in to sharing these videos with the world!

Took 26:45. Scrolling through, it seems at 33 minutes in you get to the location of 78 in box 9. You can do that at the very start and it's the first deduction I made. I don't know if you go through the same deduction, but whatever is on the 5 difference line twice cannot be 6 or 4, therefore to appear on the orange line it must be the bottom-right cell of the grid or you would have 4 of either 123 or 789. The other high-low digit r8c8's group must make an appearance on the orange line twice, therefore cannot have another of its modular group be in r7c7, therefore 7 and 8 can only be in the square if they are r8c7 and r7c8. That seems to lead to a much quicker solve path, where you can immediately fill in the 6 on r9c4, among other things.

Great puzzle - took me 35 minutes. Another way of looking at the whisper in box 9 is to ask what happens if 7 or 8 goes one on the knuckle and one off the line. The one on the knuckle then needs to be flanked by two small digits, but the entropy line _also_ needs two small digits, which means we need four digits from {1,2,3} in the box ... so that doesn't work, and the 7 and 8 must _both_ be on the whisper line.

I wouldn't sweat the "ah"s, an utterance essentially meaning "I noticed or realized something" is a pretty natural thing in a video where you're talking through solving a puzzle, it's a sports commentator worrying that they're being unoriginal because they say the word "ball" too often...

I solved this one before watching the video, and was surprised to hear Simon say it has a 3 star difficulty. I usually only solve 1 or occasionally 2 star puzzles, and didn't find this one especially challenging. I wonder if it got bumped up a level due to solvers being less familiar with entropy lines, or if it just means I need to try more 3 star puzzles.

So i had to listen to that REM song, just like every time when Simon puts a 3 in the corner. Btw i've got today the Cracking the Cryptic book (thanks for the 500sub coupon code), and oh man.. That book is amazing. There are so many things to explore, so I think maybe there is an easter egg hidden on the pages. (If not, there is an opportunity in the sequel) ((sorry for my English, i've learned from computer games, so i knew the word plate armor before i knew what a fork or spoon is))

Simon, we love your Simarkisms, and those that are more peculiar to you are very charming. This was a wonderful video, a perfect end to the week. Thank you! (I like the puzzles that have to do with various kinds of lines.) The finish, discovering the two fours around that marked quad clue, was very fun.

This was really a beautiful puzzle. I'd argue with the difficulty rating of 3, if 3 means average. To me it seemed more like challenging, though not brutally hard, so more like a 4. Anyway - very beautiful - the symmetry of the clues (in shape, if not in details), the different pieces of logic resulting from the combination of the different clues. And the finale - disambiguating all the 45 pairs with the final clue. Unlike Simon I didn't check what would be the mechanism, I just trusted that colouring would lead to the answer, and it did - and made me smile.

I have been struggling with one of your puzzles in your free app which features german whispers, as this is something I've never come across before and did not know the "secret" about it...that you can't ever have a 5 on a green line or that you can only have 4 and 6 on the edges. This may prove helpful when I go back to it now! 🙂

What a wonderful puzzle, which was rather easy to assemble thanks to the three different types of lines and finally to solve step by step. After my solution, I looked at Simon's path and found that I wasn't the only one who had a temporary problem (or question mark) with the many 4-5 pairs towards the end and was glad that I hadn't done anything wrong.

27:45 Can actually place the 8 in r6c9 here, because put it on its other pencil marked space in box 6 you can't put a high digit in the vertical leg of the top-right entropic...

I've been absolutely loving the free puzzles on the app! The only problem for me is that I'm only on puzzle 10 and yet I'm finding it quite impossible to find the logic. I can stumble through it by peeking at the hints but I don't think I'll be able to solve anymore without the hints lol.

I made a horrible mistake on this puzzle when resolving aspects of the orange line in the bottom right corner. I discovered the high digits and resolved them fairly early, no mistakes there, I did that before even the way more obvious start with the 7 cell renban line. But when considering the remaining digits on the 7 cell orange line later on and pencil marking them in, I noted I had by that point 1,3, and 6 in row 9 already placed, so the low entropy digit in row 9 was a 2 and the middle one a 4 or 5. This meant of course that the middle entropy digit in column 9 was a 1 or a 3 since a 2 was in the box elsewhere, which was also indicated by the 27 pair in column 9, so all was great. Then I was a muppet and decided, for no reason whatsoever, that the middle entropy digit in row 9 also had to be a 4 or a 5, and couldn't be a 6, and marked it as such. The worst thing is this took a LOOOOONG time (at least at the slow speed I solve) to finally break the puzzle in a noticeable way. I'm glad I didn't give up because this was an amazing puzzle and solving it on my own was very satisfying, but man did I spend a lot of time trying to discover and fix my error.

Really enjoyed this puzzle. A lot of ways to get started, and a lot to distract your eyes from what's most important, without making it all feel too cluttered. As for solving, I got stuck at 8's and 9's for some reason in box 1 & 4, with several different opening leading to the same result. Turns out I kept making the same mistake every time, and failing to see and mark the true position of 9 in box 1 as a possibility. Took me way longer, and more attempts than needed, but I feel it speaks a lot for the puzzle if it's able to keep me coming back for yet another try before taking hints from the video!

3 of the cells in the square belong to a 5 cell line, so the best you can do is 34567 or 45678, you cannot have both 3 and 8 on that same line, but both must be in that square, therefore the one non-line cell, which is r3c7, is either a 3 or an 8.

What really helped me was in box 9 knowing that 456 belonged in R7C7 and then one of each on the wings (since they can't be on the green line.) That tells you where 78 goes. I foolishly got stuck for 5 mins where I had the numbers filled in on the orange lines but hadn't updated their color which told me the order of the numbers on the other wing.

Just wanted to write this it could be helpful for someone else out there who maybe watches these videos via a KZbin app on a tv like me. I’ve noticed sometimes it’s hard to see the difference of colors such as yellow and green if they’re next to each other in the puzzle but only if the settings on my tv are too bright. If I put the brightness down and play around with the contrast settings aswell the colors are easily differentiated. I have 2 tv’s in my house, my main living room tv is actually fine I never have to change settings and have no issue but it’s a good tv. But I have a small tv in my bedroom which isn’t as good and that is the one I always have to change my settings for. Im not color blind myself but I know alot of people are but even if your not, sometimes changing the settings of the tv screen can really help actually see the colors properly if you struggle with that.

Very nice puzzle, and not much in the way of Simonisms to moan about today. The logic with the 456 needing to go in the quad in box 9, and not on the line, was there for ages, but nothing else was worth shouting about.

I worked on it for over an hour, but I must've gotten something backwards, as it all fell apart when I thought I had the right hand side resolved. It is not an easy one for keeping track of everything, and I just don't have the energy to go through it again, so that's it for today, I'm afraid.

So I have a question, with your software, if you made the yellow squares at the end 5’s, would the software still say that the puzzle was solved? Does the software take into consideration the alternative rules?
