He had no plans to be an actor. He just took an acting class in high school to avoid taking English Comp. Two classmates missed their bus in the rain, a casting agent picked them up and asked if they knew someone for a role as Claudette Colbert's son in Tomorrow is Forever. They recommended Richard, talked him into calling about it, a a couple days later he was making the movie and his career started at age 17. He had a solid career for the rest of his life, working constantly until about three months before he died of heart trouble at 47. If you watch his work through the 29 years of his career, you can actually see him learning his craft and getting better at it all the time.

Amazing!!!! Talk about following the path laid out before you. He got the ball rolling by taking the acting class but his friends really pushed him into Hollywood. Can you imagine being a high school student and your first movie role is with Claudette Colbert??? Incredible. He definitely learned as he went along. I especially think he learned how to use his eyes and how to hold his head in such a way for maximum impact with the beautiful baby blues. I notice in later years he always tilts his head down and leans forward so he can be looking up with his eyes, which always look great.

@@christilb He had a stranger start than even that. He was from a dirt poor Illinois family that moved to LA just as Richard was entering his senior year in high school, partly because Richard's doctors told his parents to get him to a warmer climate for his health (he'd had pneumonia problems as a child after falling into a lake while ice skating). He wouldn't have been anywhere near Hollywood but for his health problems.
