In germany we say "To clean for the wash, to dirty for the closet? Welcom to the chair!" Maybe an option is to put up some hooks at the door? The over the door type hooks, so you could juse hangers for airing out... and you don't have to put nails or other stuff in your walls

Seconding the ladder idea, but if a suitable one can’t be found etc, i could recommend a clothes butler? There are ones that have shoulder-shaped parts, to hang a dress-shirt etc there, and maybe there are ones, that don’t look too modern, or maybe there are some vintage or antique ones?

Boston, Massachusetts also has moving day! every lease is up on the same day and I believe it also includes the college dorm rooms as well. As for the washing machine... keep it as long as possible! If you do need to upgrade keep with a top loader with a agitator. Currently have a front load and it's the bane of my existence. I have to do multiple small loads and I have to wash all bedding twice to get them properly clean. I have literally pulled clothes out that have dry spots because the water never even touched it. I miss the washing machine of my childhood, i was able to do big loads and everything got clean in one go!
@cactusjumper1
@cactusjumper1 3 ай бұрын
I totally agree. My washer bit the dust when everything was so hard to get. So I had to buy one without an agitator, that's all that I could find, and I HATE it! Nothing gets clean. And I hear a lot of folks with front loaders hate them as well because of the odors. Now I'm finding agitator style back in stock, so if you could get one, get it! After your old one bites it, cuzz why waste a perfectly working machine?

I'm an unscented *everything* person. My dad has sensitive skin, so I grew up with everything unscented, and then when I started grocery shopping on my own, I didn't think about it, and got scented detergent, and found out that I *also* have sensitive skin. I broke out in hives, and found out that heavily scented things is also a migraine trigger for me. So that was fun. It's one of the biggest issues for me buying used clothes; laundry scent *does not* come out.

@@blueiris6813 Putting it in the sun can also help. It might take a few days but it also makes them smell amazing. We have an ozone generator because we live in an old stinky house. We clean as we fix things and ozone to control what we can't clean or can't get to yet. You cannot use them with living creatures in the area especially birds, there's lots of safety videos online about it. But I have used it to remove the Home Goods air freshener stench on a chair I got from craigslist. It took 3 1-hour cycles because I did it in such a big room. When I got it I had to keep it on the porch in the sun for a few days and it helped but the smell was so deep inside the fabric.

I’m here for it all! My partner and I are restoringish a 1914 Craftsman bungalow. I’ve spent the summer repairing and replacing cedar shakes and painting. Next spring is a new roof. I tackled all 22 windows 3 years ago. Unfortunately, someone had removed most of the old windows and stuck plexiglass on with caulk 😢, so I put in interior mount replacement windows while keeping the old frame and beautiful molding. It’s a long process, and your videos often keep me company while I’m working.

That is usually what I am looking for, but sometimes I am blindsided with something I want to listen more closely to and stop doing the thing as a result. it's good to know up front that I can passively listen and not miss that much, sorta like when body doubling with another chatty AuDHDer but we both know it's just parallel play out loud and we might not retain anything the other says.

That's my laundry plan, too. Sitting here for 16 hours doesn't make my clothes dirty. Showering before bed doesn't make my pajamas dirty. Working outside however or a house project is a totally different wearing experience. You've really got a BIG load in that washer. Have you considered putting your basket on the floor and loading and unloading from there? Also shaking the items outdoors before loading... I have a GSD who sheds 11 months, 3 weeks, and 6 days a year.

I had a tree fall through my bedroom an hour after I went to bed friday morning during the hurricane. Luckily we still had the billboard tarp from the slip and slide we had on 4th of july so minimal water damage. We immediately moved everything out so nothing was ruined but the roof and the drywall over the bed where the branch poked through about 4 ft over my chest. A clutter reduction tip : trays. You probably will find some trays in your attic. An old breakfast tray might be ideal for all your small electronics, to keep them together and move everything you might need where ever you settle to work. A small tea tray is ideal for sewing tools and notions on your craft table. not only will they keep your things together and within reach; they also eliminate visual clutter. You may remember how your grandmother kept her lotions etc. on a tray on the dresser. it tells your brain that there is one thing on the dresser rather than a dozen. Its the same principal as keeping the dishes in the dishpan.

You know the song that goes "give it away give it away now!" my ADHD mantra is PUT IT AWAY PUT IT AWAY AND NOT DOWN! if I can't put it away I have landing pads at each door to the outside and in the kitchen and living room so that if I can't expend the energy to put it away I can get it closer to its home. Both of my parents were probably ADHD. My dad drank 6 to 9 cups of coffee a day and so he could sleep which all of us do now as adults. But I realized that our parents were messy and would get mad at us for having messy rooms but they never gave us the skills to learn HOW TO CLEAN. Its absolutely a skill that needs to be taught and learned because I didn't get the hang of it til I got adderall at age 36 (44 now) and then reddit taught me how to ADHD clean and the modern algorithm has showed me more. Having a home for all your stuff is key. And I have a lotta stuff lol but I have a clean house for the first time in my life and its SUCH a mental load off.

So many great ideas for not-quite-dirty clothes! I learned a LOT about hooks & racks and many were soooo cute, but alas living in a small Victorian apt with original plaster walls (gosh they are gorgeous) that don’t take kindly to hooks and things… I loved the idea of a small bench with a back for hooks. I’m sure my floor will continue to do its job. A tip for those of you who hang heavy jeans/pants on over the door hooks (or hooks on the door), that weight will affect how the door hangs. I try to limit myself to 2-3 pairs but it would probably be better not to hang my jeans on a door….

I know the fireplace mantle is currently your coffee station, but it is a wonderful width for a charging station. If you make it black marble again, you get a cold black surface to help keep your charging items cool and the (mostly black) chargers blend in nicely. If the black is too different from the rest of the room, you could paint the trim gray to blend nicely.

I agree about not washing worn-but-not-dirty clothes as ecologically and financially sound policy. I used to us the traditional chair, but the clothes got so wrinkled I didn't want to wear them. Then I found a closet bar that hangs over the top of a door and hung it on the outside of the closet door, and that's my place for lightly worn clothes. You know the labels you liked on the Brookside sheets so you don't struggle to figure out which are the short sides? It's easy to make your own. My mother-in-law would take a stitch in a contrasting color at the bottom edge of sheets and blankets, leaving a cm or so of loose thread. I take a lazier approach and just make a small mark with a black Sharpie pen. I know you didn't solicit advice, but I'm claiming the old person's perogative of offering it anyway. 😄 Hang on to that washing machine for as long as you can. When it breaks, repair it. The newer machines don't last. They have computer circuit boards in them which wear out in 3 or 4 years, and the cost to replace the computer is almost as much as a new washing machine. My appliance repairman actually bought a set of old Kenmore washer and dryer for his parents, because they last so much longer and, according to him, get the clothes cleaner. If you have to keep replacing the new ones, saving on your water bill is a false economy.

Yesterday I was on the phone for 90 minutes with my phone company cancelling my husband's cell account, 9 months after he passed away, because I dreaded the task. Today I have just eaten supper, but, I'm going to strip my bed and swap out the summer stuff for the winter stuff, and wash it all, because it's Alberta and miraculously it's been a no frost fall so far but it's coming, soon. The trees are yellow and the leaves are falling now. Thank you for a fun hour. 🤗 Getting stuff done is very satisfying, and I hope you find a decent car soon. I'm giving my Toyota , 18 years old but low mileage and in good shape, to my middle granddaughter once it snows. Too chicken to drive once winter hits. I really enjoyed watching. It was like having a nice visit with a friend who you don't mind seeing your messes or your laundry basket while you have a good old natter👍😘💖

You know what... one thing a day is a sure way to cross items off your list, and it's probably far more sustainable than a cleaning binge one day and are then exhausted and do nothing for two weeks after!

Hi, I'm doing house maintenance paperwork while watching :) I am team unscented laundry soap! I tend to throw thrifted finds in with regular laundry and that'll "taint" a whole load with the strong scents of other people's laundry soap. I don't mind things that are lightly scented but laundry stuff is generally SCENTED!!!! I would say keep your old washing machine until it dies on you. Older washers are often easy to repair, I've replaced the feed dogs on mine, thanks youtube for the help! If you are in a part of the world where you aren't in a desert and aren't drawing from an underground aquifer and you have good water treatment, the additional water usage isn't that big of a deal. You are already economizing on water usage by only laundering things when they truly need it :)
@shannonmakessomethingelse
@shannonmakessomethingelse Ай бұрын
Yes! Had another commenter say that they had read a study (admittedly published in Germany, but still, probably holds true on my side of the drink) that upgrading washers is fairly negligible in terms of energy savings/ecological effects, but that upgrading to a new dryer, which are so much more energy efficient now than previously, is much more worth it/has more noticeable ecological ramifications!
@egreen9841
@egreen9841 Ай бұрын
@shannonmakessomethingelse Hmmm I'd like to read the study. My engineering brain thinks drying is more efficient when you have a new washer because the new washers are much much better at removing water from clothes before they hit the dryer. But I would say an old dryer is about as efficient as it's going to get as long as it's cleaned (as in take it apart if it's been several years, and vacuum out the entire internals) plus always keep the lint remover empty. If you're going to line dry the majority of the time and mainly use your dryer for when it's not feasible for line drying or to finish off the drying, then I think an old but maintained dryer is fine as well. I always try my things mostly outside if I can and then finish off in the dryer. In Galveston TX often we have 80-90% humidity days and it's just not possible to line dry everything. Plus, I like the softening effect of the dryer vs 100% outside things tend to dry crunchier.

Hi loved watching this. Making a macrame pumpkin gifted to me. A thought on your bedroom hook situation. When we built I found antique hooks, got a 1 x 6. Cut it to fit the section of wall and mounted the hooks to that. 2 holes instead of 4 or more. Stained board and routed edges. Love it and hang my clothes that don't need washing, so with you there. Not dirty but don't want to wear next day😊. You are doing such a good job, if I wasn't in the USA and near 80 years young, 😊 I'd love to be there to help. We faced many of the same challenges you are facing now and I'm here to tell you, it will get better but so much ahead. Sending good thoughts and wishes to you both. ❤

I have a couple of “tight” spaces that I have placed Shaker-style storage. My choice is a 2 foot board in space one and a 3 foot board in space two. Each board has slightly tilted 2 inch pegs that are equally spaced over the length. Plenty of depth for a few hangers with clothes on them placed several pegs apart and leaving empty pegs between for hanging a purse, jewelry, flannel shirt, etc. I hung one high on the wall entering the pantry for hanging an apron, splatter guard, colander, and even to hang plastic bags while air drying. I bought mine, but they aren’t hard to make with the skills you already have and wood from your stash. Best of luck with this huge project!

If I may give you an idea with the tablecloth, when my boys were little, I would put the rubber like shelf liner under it to hold it in place. It also works great to hold things in place on shelves etc. I also used it to keep my couch cushions from sliding forward. Hi Shannon, I am so with you about the clothes, we can judge if they need to be washed or not yet. There is no time frame or sequences to do the laundry, it is when it is needed. We use our nose, smell the fabric and take a decision, as long as we wash ourself often, of course. For those clothes not ready to go in the washer machine, the best solution is to use 2 long hooks (which won't exceed the number of hangers needed) attached to the wall that can rotate to the wall if not in use (same way as a plant wall rack that can be positioned more to the left, the middle or to the right), that way you can place hangers on then, one for your t-shirts and so and the other one for your pants. The air will circulate, they won't wrinkle and the room will look tidy. For the coffee filters, it is better to place them upside down, avoiding dust/insects from accumulating into it. Happy for the weee thing when Cannelle jumped on the bed !

I have a worn, not dirty pile. My mother was much more organized with it. She used to hang up clothes worn once inside out. Then after watering again they went in the wash. I definitely like the idea of hooks to air things out. I have racked my brain for years for a place to hang clothes lines for airing and drying clothing and bedding. One indoors and one out. I have just built an arbor over our back sliding door on the deck. It needs finishing touches, but when done that will be my out door clothes hanging spot.
