I'm pretty sure that would get you arrested over here in the states. The most you can do is very politely ask to be given a warning... if that doesn't fly, you just have to deal with it - definitely don't push your luck! Haha... what a nice cop.

These people really don't get that admitting a mistake is the best way to deal with a mistake. I got caught in the public transport without a ticket, got dropped off at my stop, told them the truth that i was in a hurry, i'm aware that i'm in the wrong and that i'll pay my 30$ fine when i have free time, i just need to get it done with quick. The guy immediately told me that he'll let me go, because i was willing to admit and willing to pay the price. 2 days after, one guy starts making a fuss about the same violation that i did, get pulled over, argues some more and gets the bill for the fine. People, just admit your mistakes and be ready to pay for it if it comes to that. This goes for everything in life. It's not an attack on your dignity/pride to admit when you're in the wrong.
