1:38:00 - The reason you're seeing the same NPC characters as OoT is because the designers were rushing to release this game, so rather than create new models for every character (apart from those of critical importance to the main story) they opted to reuse those NPC models to save time.

Specifically it was Aonuma's 'test' from Miyamoto to see if he was ready to take over as the lead for future Zelda projects. He had one year to make a worthy Zelda game, and Majora's Mask was the result.

I LOVE how the perpetual motion of time as a game mechanic perfectly encapsulates the urgency and dread of Link's current situation. There's no time to stop, there's no time to ask questions or explore. You're lost in a new place, scared and confused, but the only thing that you're certain of is that something terrible has happened to you and you've only got three days to sort shit out. It's a strong narrative hook that really leans into eliciting an emotional reaction from the player that's not at all dissimilar to how Link must be feeling, and that's just so cool to me.

@@FSVR54 I played it at launch in 2000, and I was well aware of that central mechanic beforehand. As the followup to the ridiculously successful OoT, there was a ton of coverage of the game in the months leading up to its release. Magazines like Nintendo Power published many stories and interviews about the game's basic premise, like how it involved repeating a 3 day cycle, how some of the items would or would not be retained when resetting the cycle, etc. In fact, my suspicion is they released even more info than they might have otherwise, since it was so vastly different than OoT, and I think they were worried about players being completely confused by the premise. Even reading the articles beforehand, my 12 year old mind didn't fully comprehend the idea of how it worked until I actually played it. But either way, there's no question there was a ton of info available, and many people went into the game knowing there was at least a 3 day cycle, at a minimum.

The panic you are feeling is what the devs were feeling being given a time limit of about a year from nintendo. If they didnt finish a new zelda game in that time, nintendo would just release a remixed ocarina of time. Its fun how they worked that time limit into the plot! Also I love how this game is totally left field because the devs had zero oversight and had no time to second guess their decisions. One of many reasons its my favorite zelda!

They may have changed this text in the 3DS remake, but I just noticed I can tell *exactly* what common Japanese phrase that comes from and it's technically an incorrect translation. The real meaning is more like "Try and stop me if you even can," and it's a pretty typical way of teasing/goading people, not like a philosophical statement about the inevitability of a situation. In the end, it's not the biggest deal because it's still totally communicable either way, it just stood out to me for a moment because it's *so* literal to the point that it changes the feeling.

greetings and welcome to my new series, which (as the creative genius I tell myself I am) I'll call "MM stuff I haven't seen before or can't remember", or "MMSIHSBOCR" for short. mapo has delivered a wonderful first episode, which didn't disappoint in the slightest, as it showed me 2 things ALREADY!!! - for some reason, I've never noticed the treasure chest on the final day on the little tower they are building. I wonder what it contains? I sure hope mapo opens it at some point in the playthrough. - I'm actually not sure if I've ever seen the dialogue between the thief and the curiosity shop dude. unless it's part of a longer quest and I simply forgot about it. but it's been quite some years since I last played it to completion. I think that's it for today. thank you very much for reading. have a great day (and don't forget to become a member of this very special club. memberships are and always will be free. just post your "discoveries" right here) and thx to mapo for always entertaining us.

This is like OOT with more detailed everything thanks to the expansion pack. Obviously, you can see Clock town is nearly a generational leap Over Hyrule Castle Town. Many other things are more advanced too. It's a direct sequel and they expect players to be familiar with the systems, so they add many new abilities.

I can't wait to watch this one. Unlike the hundreds of times I've beaten Ocarina, I beat Majora's Mask one time as a kid and never wanted to go back to this stress inducing nightmare of a game.

Mapo, I'm a fairly newer follower, and this is your furst play through I'm watching as you post. While both N64 Zelda games are dear to me, this one is even more so since my siblings had moved out and this one I had to figure out mostly on my own. Good luck, you're going to love it, and I'm looking forward to your next episode!

I adore Majora's Mask so much, mostly because of how creative it is! I think the devs basically had to make this entire game in a year and they did such a fantastic job of making it feel like such a lived-in world, even if it's (I think) a smidge smaller than Ocarina of Time. I hope you have so much fun playing this--it encourages such a different play style from Ocarina and it's honestly kind of dark and gritty! I just love it. Can't wait for the next episode!

This was my favorite game for almost 2 decades, only dethroned by Outer Wilds + Echoes of the Eye. I've been waiting for you to play this for soooo long, it's a game that has little secrets everywhere, the attention to detail puts so many games to shame even now. Case in point, I've never seen that cutscene of the thief and curiosity shop owner haggling before. I've seen some of that dialogue though.

I first played this in high school, maybe 2001-2002? I didn't get very far because my brother took the N64 to college, but then I played it once I went to college shortly after. For all of the very clear genetics of ocarina of Time that this has, all of the reused assets, it really goes big with how it shakes up the formula, and it really makes the most of the memory expansion. This was one of two games, I believe, that required the expansion to play. The other one was donkey Kong 64

I am SO excited to watch you play through this game! Majora's Mask is my favorite of the Zelda series, and you said it perfectly; this game is entirely incredible, unique, and bizarre. The 3-day time loop game mechanic blew my mind as a kid, it was the first time i'd encountered anything like that in a game and the hours i poured into this game trying to figure out all the pieces to every intricate puzzle (eventually i convinced my mom to buy me the strategy guide haha, that was a god send to get full completion) The anxiety that comes with timed games is too relatable, but this was so much fun and i'm very much looking forward to more

Hope the mods work overtime here to make sure Mapo doesn't read any spoilers about the game, this is our one chance to see him go through this one completely blind! When it comes to the "timeline implications" the one thing I'd say is that, they definitely played around with it early in the series, but as time went on (an the larger the series and the number of games becomes), it became more of this tongue in cheek "oh hey i recognize that from this previous game" kinda thing rather than a well defined timeline meant to be taken seriously.
