I am, at this very moment, busy, building a vane engine, of which I have changed the shape of the oval chamber, so that it will deliver higher compresion, better combustion, and improved intake. I will share it with you, once I have it running.

Ever watch driving4answers? He did a video on it. Great channel. I highly recommend his channel for anyone who likes engines. He tried to make one which didn't go so well recently. I am generally an electric guy. Yet this would change the world with hybrid tech. One day maybe. One day when we have biological parts that can heal like a living organism. Just playing. That would be wild, and probably disgusting having biological/mechanical parts that regenerated. Vains made out of bone and tissue.

Not a masterpiece. An interesting concept. Everyone is remaking the same video. One of the actual main issues with this engine is the pressure build up behind the vanes in the chamber the vane leaves behind when it extends. In a compressor, each chamber created by the vanes has the same fluid/gas so it isn't an issue. In a vane engine, the pressures are different for each cycle. I've read about designers that just gave up after years of trying and hitting a wall with this problem yet it isn't mentioned in any of these idealized videos.

How do the vanes get lubricated and cooled? How is that lubricant prevented from getting into the combustion chamber ? I think this might make a good chainsaw motor running on 2 stroke mixed fuel but i cant see it in cars.

There is a lot of rotary vane machinery in the field of pumps and compressors. In these applications the thermal requirements are not as hard as in the field of internal combustion engines. You can use well developed sealing solutions with very low friction. The movement of the vanes is usually done simply by centrifugal forces. In order to keep the forces low, the elliptic housing is usually not too much wider than the rotating cylinder diameter. Rotational speed is always a problem because you have to avoid oil or greeze. Therefore the circumferential speed is in the order of 1 to 2 m/s.The sealing at the rotating cylinder sides requires spring loaded solutions, which is not so simple. So many rotary vane pumps live with gaps and fluid losses. I can imagine, that in the field of lower operating temperatures, i.e. steam engines, rotary vane engine may contribute to the technical solution field. At higher temperatures you will meet much more sealing problems as in the case of the geometrical well defined rotor of Wankel engines. I think you have to use graphit or boron nitride for high temperature sealings which are self-lubricating. Also liquid metals like Galinstan can be applied for sealing and lubrication like in the case of displacer sealings for Gamma Stirling engines.
@barriegregory6606Ай бұрын
This exact system has been used in compressors for 100 years, if this engine worked I think someone would have an actual working engine by now, I can imagine trying to seal the sliding vane without it seizing at high temperature would be difficult at least.

Some sort of electromagnetic force can assist the vanes from actually coming to contact with the bore walls And the electromagnetic force can vary depending on the RPM

Wankel has 3 combustions per 1 rotation.
@danbenson75878 күн бұрын
Here’s a few issues… 1. Corliolis acceleration..an issue when a translation motion (vanes) are in a rotational frame. Increases w square of revs. 2. Tip speed…the vanes so heavily press against the housing at speed breaking thru oil film. Increases w square of revs. 3. Uneven heating. Combustion, exhaust, intake, compression cause the housing to differentially expand ruining clearances. 4. Lubrication… the vanes must be lubed by a lost oil system (like a 2 stroke piston engine). See 1 and 2 above. 5. Rotor and vane cooling… doable but problematic 6. One advantage is the housing cavity does not have to be symmetric so overexpanded cycle possible. 7. The engine has significant wetted area thru which it will lose heat diminishing efficiency. BTW…Mallory (a defunct auto electric parts company) built an externally blown vane engine in the 60s. It was a runner. The vanes controlled by rollers running in tracks. Making something run and making it endure are two different challenges.. good luck.

Vane has 4-6 combustion events per rotation, wankel has terrible fuel efficiency and more terrible are oil efficiency and exhaust gases. So vane could be revolutionary

My prediction for the future: Nuclear Vane engines - Basically micro reactors connected to vane engines that use the nuclear energy output to directly drive the vane engine. imagine such an engine in cars, you would never have to refuel haha. The issue is the development of safe nuclear fuel that not only would have to be safe from emissions but also in the case of accidental damage, it shouldn't pollute the area with radiation. In a sense they would not only be cleaner than EVs but also safer. EVs have a major hazard problem of batteries or electronics catching fire that can't be put out like a normal ICE engine fire. Nuclear really is looking like the future.

There is a huge basic problem with that air motor to combustion.. To many quadrants, your intake charge is squeezed down to nothing. Never work!.. There is a reason a rotary valve engine has a triangle in there!.

Heat dissipitation issue at higher speed and sealing is another. Oval chamber can solve problem and lower rpm will help with concentrated heat at combustable side. So, make it rotate slower, with oval chamber that has horseshoe sealings.

it would help if you shut off the radio edit: no use, that "engine" can't be sealed, every explosion will leak thru the vanes; and explosions are indirect hits, you absolutely need PISTON And RINGS

Patented dozen of times, already constructed in several variations and make sound, turns but seems to have issues. In matter of fact, the big problem of the thermal engine is not the mechanical efficiency. Is the enormous exergy lost due the way to treat the fuel+air reaction, and this architecture is far from solved it

Interesting videos on the 4 vane rotary motor. ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/naDac5d7n5eBqbcsi=6Zz8mjYeJaBbsWJL and kzbin.info/www/bejne/i4Gpd4t4dspoo8Usi=XHe5g-6dIUHWcEwk) It seem that it can be used to replace a diesel piston engine. How is it cooled? It still seems to require a super charger - posaibly a two stage one such as found on a diesel electric locomotive (see kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXq0Yax_j8yEm6csi=yWpC3xglkgIiS14b). In a marine setting it would still need scrubbers for exhaust gasses (see kzbin.info/www/bejne/e2a9mmBsq8loodEsi=eYKLRr2af-B-H88L). Would you recommend having an extra vane motors on on a common shaft either one mounted at 45 degree angle or two mounted at 30 and 60 degree angles to smooth out the power flow? Regards Philip
