This is Built to Spill in 1999 (I think) on the Conan show. Not one of my favorite songs off of Keep It Like a Secret; and, they had to cut the song short, since TV viewers have short attention spans. Forgot I taped this off the TV when it originally aired, and I just found the tape again.

It just hit me that the show you saw took place 23 years after this one. As an older person (54), every once in awhile, the speed of life just hits you like a sledgehammer. This is one of those times. I can recall the first time I saw them. It was a show on HBO & they were being shown along with Pavement (another band I love & the reason I was watching it in the first place). I’d never heard of BTS, but after a couple songs, I was totally in. In fact, I would get annoyed when they would cut to Pavement for another song. That was 98 or 99. can’t believe it was that long ago.

I don't usually comment on a lot of videos, but there are a few comments here that I would like to address and or correct. First. @downallyourstreets You are in fact correct that Dugs guitar has Ben on it as well. You can clearly see it at 3:10. Side note to that, over the years since then Karena's has worn off from Dug's playing. And for quite a long time now (not sure exactly how long) it has only had remnants of the Ka with the very end of the n now looking like a 1a at the end with the heart still there. Ironically the license plate code for Ada County where Boise is, is 1A. So for me it's a very happy accident that seems to say 1A Love (I have lived in the Boise area for most of my life) Ben's name is still fully intact! Also a slight correction, I believe that Dug actually quit Treepeople in 92 due to following Karena back to the Boise area (Caldwell to be more specific) I can't find the interview anymore but there is one where he actually goes into quite a bit of the history from this time explaining the numerous reasons that this happened. But you seem to know your history so I might be wrong about that. @Sean_Sheeler .... No... that is not Jack White, that is in fact Brett Netson. As stated by @downallyourstreets he is in fact one of the Original members of Built To Spill's first lineup. He was replaced by Brett Nelson in 94. And then joined the band again around in or before 97. (I have never really been sure on exactly when.) He remained in the band until later 2015. His band Caustic Resin while being a much different vibe than Built To Spill were also fantastic. @Mitchell_Vision This actually almost happened on Perfect From Now On tinyurl.com/rc7t4t2 (But as a drummer) Lastly I'll just say this. Much love to Dug and the entire Built To Spill family (Fans included). I realize I'm commenting on a video posted 6 years ago at this point in time and that many people will likely never see this. But since hearing "Strange" on the radio one time only (and have actually never heard a Built to Spill song played on the radio since (Again, from Boise)) I have been in love with everything that a vast majority of the players in the BTS saga have touched. I only wish that would have had more opportunities to see them than I have over the years. This particular video is one of my favorite to come back and watch. Mainly because after hearing them for the first time I went straight onto napster and downloaded every single thing I could find. I still have my original copy of this in audio only format. (Addendum) Does anyone know what Conan is talking about when he mentions that Boise is his old stomping grounds? This has bothered me for literally 20+ years.

I wonder if he thought Netson was the singer since he was in the middle....it's highly possible that from his vantage point, he couldn't even see them....funny and fucjed though...great performance, even with the key change jam clipped..

@@drewa1999 I think it's more that Conan, being a Hahvid prepster, assumed the guy with the big head of frizz "had to be the leader" -- based upon the haircut and center stage, even if Doug was singing. I'd wager Conan didn't know which one was Doug.

This record is flawless. I love this song but it is a weird choice for network television. They should’ve played Carry The Zero or The Plan and the crowd would’ve been crying. Still a rad video and from a record that was one of the best of 1999.
