It's a shame that this is the Doctor who has the most missing episodes, as he is quickly becoming my absolute favorite.
@MALONEYCAMFIELD9 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is a shame. Troughton is considered by many to be the best actor to have played the part, even if his era was not the most popular when it went out. Some of his stories are very atmospheric, helped a lot by his performances and also the use of things like Radiophonic Workshop music to make up for the lack of special effects.
@MALONEYCAMFIELD7 жыл бұрын
Actually, every episode of Doctor Who existed until 1972. The wipings took place between 1972-1978, when the BBC finally established a comprehensive archiving policy. Many programmes from this era, not just Doctor Who, were wiped. Doctor Who is actually quite lucky because it sold overseas, so many episodes were recovered this way.
@MALONEYCAMFIELD7 жыл бұрын
To be fair to the BBC, union rules were very strict in those days (it was pre-Thatcher, remember) and therefore the actor's union demanded high repeat fees for its clients, so that was another reason there appeared to be no reason to keep programmes, as repeating them would be extraordinarily expensive. There was a multitude of reasons why dumping programmes appeared sensible at the time. And it wasn't just the BBC, there's a lot of early ITV material which was got rid of for the same reasons.
@justrandomvids107 жыл бұрын
The 1972 thing is not correct, some episodes were wiped shortly after broadcast, take for example "the highlander" that was wiped just six months after broadcast Source: Dr Who Wiki
@MALONEYCAMFIELD7 жыл бұрын
"The 1972 thing is not correct, some episodes were wiped shortly after broadcast" The master tape may have been wiped, but the BBC had copies of all episodes on 16mm film until 1972, when they started destroying them. All Hartnell and Troughton episodes that exist today exist because of 16mm copies were made and discovered. The master tapes were all wiped of Hartnell and Troughton era episodes.

Exactly. Remember how he dealt with the Ice Warriors in the Seeds of Death? The Ice Lord stands, helpless as he watches his entire fleet destroyed, the doctor tricking them with a false signal leading them straight into the sun.. He, scarcely beleving himself, watching all the hopes of his race go down in literal flames, and practically shrieks to the doctor "you have destroyed our entire fleet!" The Doctor, with not even an inch of pity, states flatly "you tried to destroy an entire world". No mercy, stone cold justice. The second doctor is not to be fucked with. You can see that constantly in Troughton's run, there are occasional split second flashes of a legally dark intelligence buried amongst mounds of bumbling tomfoolery

I absolutely love how Troughton points his face toward the relative position of the person he's talking to when using the video phone (ie when he talks to Jamie, he looks to the left of the screen, his right). He might even just change where his eyes are looking to give the effect that he can actually see Jamie, Zoe, and the others. Even at first when Jamie and Zoe pass in front of the monitor, his gaze follows them. Quite clever, and really perceptive of how that technology could actually work, even though all he's actually talking to is a camera.
@paulohagan33093 жыл бұрын
He was a superb but as so often sadly underappreciated actor. I once saw a video about his part in the Omen movie where it was explained he had to make it look as if he'd been impaled by a church spire even though it was just a line drawn on to the film. Very impressive.

We'd never catch up with the signals, I'm afraid. This story in particular is 46 light-years away already. Which means if you travel at the speed of light, it'll take you 46 years to get there, by which point the signal will have traveled a further 46 light-years. And this is only if light-speed travel is possible, of course, which it isn't. Essentially, to overtake something you need to travel faster than it, and traveling faster than the speed of light is physically impossible. It doesn't matter if the transmission happened 50 years ago or 1 hour ago. You *CAN'T* do it. We'd need an actual TARDIS to pull this off, and if we had one of those it'd be easier to just go back in time and plug in a DVD recorder. Sorry :-(

Well, with that negative attitude of course it won't happen. Can you think of a single thing we've done in our history that began with the words "We CAN'T."

Nathanielle Crawford Well, if my scepticism inspires you to completely demolish our current understanding of physics and invent faster-than-light travel, I'd be delighted! Good luck! However, if your only motive for doing so is to watch missing Doctor Who episodes, maybe just crowd-fund some animated reconstructions instead. It'd likely be quadrillions of pounds cheaper and thousands of years quicker.

I love the Wheel in Space Arc because it’s such a pillar in his reputation. The Cybermen rediscovering the Doctor for the first time as he singlehandedly takes down a Cyber Fleet. Fresh out of his new regeneration, the Cybermen are keenly aware, (but not fully alarmed yet) of a man that’s been interfering in their plans. It’s the Wheel in Space that eventually elevates this singular man, this “Doctor” into the deafcon 5 alert that he continues to be treated as. Now the cybermen are on to this guy and the brilliantly written dialogue reflects that. There’s also a tragically beautiful moment where 2 has to deliver the news that Gemma Corwyn, is dead. And the acting is so on point. You can see the regret and the contemplation in his face when he delivers the news. Aside from the brilliant acting of Patrick Troughton in a setting where there’s no music to reinforce the mood or setting, you can kinda see in his face, the Time Lord in him thinking of all the things he could’ve done different. Despite its morbid nature, it’s one of my favorite 2 moments as it shows that although traveling in space can be fun and exhilarating, it can also take from you, and leave with you nothing. In this situation not everyone gets a happy ending.

I swear I see the eleventh Doctor in the second Doctor so much. Patrick Troughton will always be my favorite classic Doctor. When he said Jamie with relief, it's like the Eleventh Doctor saying Rory. xD

I wish they had found the missing episodes for this story. But still the two stories they found are pretty damn good as well.

The cyberman looked as if he were dancing when he got killed. That's why I love the classic series.

Unfortunately, this is one of the many serials from the 1960s that are missing from the BBC archives. I believe only two out of six episodes from this serial are actually in existence. It is a terrible shame that so many of these classic episodes can no longer be seen, especially by younger, more curious fans like myself.

You're right, ejl! Only episodes 3 and 6 of The Wheel in Space exist. May there come a day when the remaining four episodes will be found. And hopefully, more Troughton-era serials. The BBC junking their classic programs back in the 70s, is inexcusable, and totally myopic. They obviously never thought that future generations might be interested in 1960s Dr. Who. They were dead wrong. 😼📺📺🇬🇧🇬🇧

0:09 they didn’t have video call in that time so just imagine how precise they have to be with their dialogue.

I also meant in this scene, he talked (in this scene) to gain useful information (he wasn't trying to talk his way out of anything as he knew he had the electric force field generator) which he later used to defeat them. Remember the only weapon the Doctor ever relies on is talking. It is one of the few things that is constant through all incarnations of our favourite time lord.

As a kid in the 60's Dr Who was my favourite TV program..........in a time when there were many great TV shows. I really liked the Troughton era, as it mainly featured monsters. It is absolutely tragic that the BBC wiped many of these stories, as many were classics, and unfortunately there are only a few grainy episodes left of many of the serials. Anyway I like to see these to remind me of the days when we could see these stories in pristine condition when on original transmission.........btw I remember I really didn't like those horrible Cybermats...:)

Also loved it when the cybermen were still partly human. Even though being mostly mechanised now is the natural progression for their story, they just feel I don't know how but less intimidating now and more limited with what you can do with them storywise.
@hamanu66611 жыл бұрын
True, hes my second favorite after Tom Baker. I hope one day the BBC or more likely, fan animators will create reconstructed animation of those missing episodes since we have all the audio from them to complete the lost episodes of Dr Who from the 60's.

So you know which one's speaking. Since their mouths don't move. On Daleks it's accomplished with a flashing light, since their head-modules lack bobbing capabilities.
