You can be easily disciplined when your "fun tank" is filled up. Having ADHD means that your fun tank is being drip fed and never gets full. Your mind is always up to seeking stimulation.
@woodlefoof2

@@Deus888 lol that’s not discipline though. Discipline is doing something even when you lack the motivation because you know it needs to be done. Problem with applying it to painting minis is that there’s really no ‘need’ for it lol the benefit is that you painted a mini, and it can look great and all but unlike exercise there isn’t any real consequence for doing or not doing it. With exercise you benefit from better health and greater physical ability. And not exercising sends you backwards undoes your progress and gains With painting minis there is no punishment, the benefit is a painted mini which is nice but if you didn’t paint the mini. Well nothing changes you just still have an unpainted mini lol Edit: lol sorry about the repetition, wrote this whole looking over shoulder at work

Love the vibes of this, and it's nice hearing someone else talk about the struggles of ADHD in such a personable and normalized manner. Either way, with this trick, I'd love for you to read up on PDA (pathological demand avoidance, not public displays of affection). Because from personal experience, this seems like peak PDA behaviour to me. "Oh, you're telling me I CANNOT do this? Ok, I wasn't gonna do it, but now I WILL DO IT!"

For me and my friends, we don't call my unbuilt/unpainted models my "Pile of Shame". We call it my "Vault of Self-Loathing". I have SO many armies across a few different systems that are mostly unbuilt, so I understand the struggle. Because I also struggle with doing consistent hobby work. My latest solution to this has been setting weekly hobby goals. I lost the habit somewhere in my 2nd year of hobbying, and bringing it back has done well for me so far. So I hope that helps you out, Paul!

Spite recently helped me start up a small side business. It started when I just wanted to print my own decals for my minis. I wanted WHITE ones which, as I found out, come with caveats and difficulties and can't normally be printed. But I didn't want to settle for buying either expensive Forgeworld sheets or GW upgrade kits. So out of spite at GW and not wanting to give them the satisfaction of making me buy expensive sheets of stickers I instead spent even MORE money to buy myself my own laser printer and specialty white toner. Then, figuring I already had the stuff needed, I went ahead and made my own Etsy store moooostly to try and make back some of the money I spent. I created a bunch of different designs and tossed them on it. I've sold a few hundred dollars worth of decal sheets, made my investment back, and now have a nice lil bit of extra spending money.

I can kind of see how having to paint an entire load of models can sap the hobby motivation. It's like chipping away at an enormous edifice. Whereas painting in small batches (or single models, apparently?) gives little shots of dopamine at regular intervals.

One of my favorite moments from the Simpsons is when Homer needs to land a plane because the pilots are incapacitated. He calls his life coach, and says "I need to learn how to land a plane!" His coach says "you know why I know you'll land that plane? Because I heard some guy say you couldn't." Homer proceeds to say "WHAT?! I'll show that guy!" and does it flawlessly.

I can hang my hat on the fact I have at least build and primed everything I own. Actually painting it, another story. But recently I've tricked some friends into joining the hobby, and seeing their painting journey has been a bit of inspiration for me to at least get a fully painted army onto the table. I've managed to make some decent progress into my DG army the past few months. Lack of time is my greatest enemy.

I just stopped buying things. Then focused on particular army projects. Now I no longer have a pile of shame. It was little in the first place because poor though. And only buying armies I'm actually very passionate about helped. I can't tell you *just* how amazing it is to go through that journey every single time I buy a box. Buying, constructing and converting, basing, priming, painting and only *then* getting a new one is so satisfying.

I think the thing with ADHD is "just stop doing X" is as hard as "Just do Y". Basically the thing that dispenses happy chemicals in our heads for completing minor tasks is fundamentally broken so with ADHD it takes a comparatively herculean effort to not take the quickest route possible to that sweet, sweet dopamine we have so little of. And of course buying the new shiny thing is a very reliable source of dopamine.

1 thing that has seriously worked for me and my severe ADD is putting everything AWAY and organizing all of it - you have to dig through EVERYTHING, especially all the stuff you already started a long time ago and put in the back so it would stop staring at you: I found some of those the other day and I realized at the time I hit a stop because I didn't have the right point or something, but now I totally do and I have almost painted a totally random assortment of Necrons that I will never use, but they're totally almost done!

The best way I've found to get through a pile of shame is to do something related to it every day, even if its just doing one detail on a squad. Just keep doing it, and keep the momentum up, best way to do this is if you have space, keep a painting spot set up. You won't paint many models fast, but at least you're doing something, and I've found that makes it feel like I'm getting through what I've got to paint. Also I guess re-framing unpainted models as gift for your future self, that one day you can paint something (which is supposed to be enjoyable) and not have to spend any more money

So managed to almost devour my entire pile of shame, also fixed my fdm printer because I couldn't get new terrain. Nearly finished painting my entire hive city project. Started experimenting w/ electronics and LEDs into my city, and want to add holograms to shine the emperors love in the city. So glad I hoarded plastic for so long, its kept me running for the past few weeks.

Funnily enough, Spite was the reason I _started_ my Fallen army. This was back in 9th ed, when Fallen _technically_ had rules, but just barely. In this case, spiting GW for leaving the renegade Dark Angels in a limbo state got me to collect and paint them. As for what gets me to actually paint, it's podcasts. I follow a fair few of them (Well There's Your Problem, Kill James Bond, Lions Led By Donkeys, It's Probably (Not) Aliens, etc). But since I get very bored listening at my desk anyway, if I have nothing to do with my hands, I put them on only when I'm prepared to start painting. It's a good reward for doing the work, as I get to keep up with a bunch of folks I like. (Most KZbin videos, which I also watch a lot of, tend to have too much going on visually. So I'm missing something if I watch that). Another thing that sometimes gets me going is making a model purchase. I just snagged a previous Age of Sigmar starter set (Tempest of Souls, for those interested) for cheap. Which made me anxious about having left my latest batch of Fallen half-finished since before the holidays. Hence, why I'm getting into the final stages of painting them as of this writing. Have to clear out some of my Pile before the box gets here.
