My mother was doing this in the '65 '70 and I've been doing it myself for a while, she also crushed and mixed it with the hens food. Great advise for new generations.

Eggshell chalk: flour, hot water, 5 to six grounded egg shells. Mix. Leave chalk alone for 4 days and enjoy! ~makes 1 chalk~ I hope this gave kids kids a better usage for eggshells☺️💖 (Sorry I don't have measurements it should make a sand like consistency, firm enough to mold)
@lovelyviolets55065 жыл бұрын
Or you can bake them in your oven the grind them into a fine powder and use it as calcium supplement for your pet snails and reptiles 😁

Yes, this works, a cousin recently told me about crushed egg shells keeping slugs away from plants. I had a Borage plant in a pot, where the leaves were being eaten nearly as fast as they were coming up. I did as he said and the next two days there were whole new leaves coming up. YAHOO, a Borage plant is now about 10 leaves and doing very well..... in about a week. ALSO, I recently discovered saving eggshells and rotting them in half gallon of water is a very effective deer repellant !!!!!! It only takes about 3 days for it to be ready for use. Apply near plants eaten by deer you want to protect once a week for a month, then once every two weeks next month, then once a month there after. should it rain a lot, you may need to reapply after rain. THIS WORKS !!!! Got the idea from reading a product label I bought one year for $12 a qt and realized I would need to buy 3 or more bottles in a given season. Not worth it and realized it was really just rotten eggshells. Oh yes, the smell is not too bad and only last a day to humans.

One other use is to break them up and add them to coffee when making coffee. This takes away some of the bitterness of coffee. The grounds can then go into compost.

I put the egg shells in a plastic bag, crush them, and return them to the chickens mixed in with other treats, scraps, etc. It returns the calcium to their system. Same as putting crushed oyster shells into their feed. Provided nice eggs and hard shells.

On our farm growing up, we threw them out in the garden to help the plants grow. They're also good for (not crushed too much) planting under/around flower bulbs to keep rodents from eating them.

Everyone should be adding eggshells to their soil/flower pots. My family and I have had composts since 1970. Nothing goes to waste. Why toss out food scraps that can help to enhance the quality of your garden soil? I like the idea of adding eggshells to the bottom of flower pots. BTW: used teabags make terrific "plugs" for drain holes on flower pots. The drying and grinding tips in this vid had me laughing, though. That'll be the day that I sit around, grinding eggshells with my mortar and pestle. And the snail/slug deterrent is a bit of a stretch. "My" slugs and snails would laugh at egg shells in my garden, as they're sliming their way over the shells.

the minerals are ''drained off'' of a hens body to make a shell so you merely feed back what is depleted from them
@brianlanders15457 жыл бұрын
Sue Miller : Just don't put egg shells in the feed, grind them up good and put them in the grit, otherwise the chickens will start eating the eggs after laying them. I always saved egg shells for my friend's boy but after he told me about the chickens eating the eggs I quit giving them to him because I thought he knew better.😂😂😄

I use to save egg shells dry it than grain into chicken food. They need lots of calcium when they growing to avoid disfigured legs. I never feed them with antibiotics or starter food but fiber rich stuff and grass as many they could pick on their own.

I use baking soda, organic virgin coconut oil and peppermint essential oil to make toothpaste. I may add egg shells to the mix. I'll investigate it first though since teeth are quite important.
@snookie512 жыл бұрын
Be warned that excessive eggshells for indoor potted plants can kill them eventually. Indoor potted plants don't have the benefits of rain which can help to neutralize the soil periodically and help to prevent over accumulation of calcium in the soil. I am speaking from practical experience. For outdoor plants, this may be ok. But do it with care for indoor plants. Do control the amount if you don't want to see stunted growth.

I save them after rinsing, then bake in a 200* oven for 10 minutes when I have an oven sheet full. I grind to powder, then add to my homemade dogfood for calcium. I store it in the freezer. I use about 1 1/2 tsp. Per lb. of meat.
