Do be honest, most of the lessons that I remember today throughout all of grade school are the ones where we played games (e.g. class jeopardy, etc). Those classes were always my favorite.

The alphabet game! Pick a topic, food, animals, something you’d find in any random room of your house. Each person goes in order, 1st person item has to start with an A, followed by B,C,D etc. It was my family’s road trip game driving back from Key West to Boca in torrential rain. Ironically it also helped with my dementia clients.

Fun story i want to share from several years ago that really stuck with me and motivates me all the time: when i was in about 6th grade i wouod have to wait a while after school to wait for my mom to come and pick me up after work. During that time i would help tutor a boy in my math class that didn't understand the curriculum when i really understood it (always way ahead of the class during this particular unit). And over the weeks we worked together after school on homework i started really seeing his growth. A few weeks after this i got a letter from my math teacher thanking me for helping the kid in a way he couldn't (he couldn't really explain it in a way the kid would understand). I still remember and get a great feeling whenever I think about it and it helps to motivate me to help others to this day. Hearing this podcast gets me excited for the rest of this year of growth and learning understanding more about teachers and what they do for students
@Lil_Ch33r2 ай бұрын
That is great, I’m also ahead in math in everything except certain divisions, I tutor over half my class and I get tutored by one of those said classmates for said divisions, and we had grown to being best friends and gotten awards for being the class tutors

A teacher, I guess, thought I had dyslexia by doing his own test seeing my writing then suddenly started saying words super weird, but it was still technically correct, and it helped my spelling. Example skissors, and after that, I always remember that scissors have a c. He was already known as super silly, so it wasn't out of nowhere.

4 corners content game: have 4 concepts on the board. Maybe vocabulary, I do rhythms since I'm a music teacher. Do a 4 corners count down, then say the one of definition (I clap the rhythm) or whatever identifier you've choosen. Whoever is in that corner is out. Randomize your order ahead of time and go down your hidden list or even use google to be your random number generator.

The only things I remember from English class senior year were my student teacher (she was very funny and I had a crush on her lol) and the kahoot games, the teachers didn’t care about names, as long as it wasn’t anything non school appropriate we could put what we wanted. My go to was Soy Venganza (I’m Vengance in Spanish 😂) I’m a huge superhero comic book/graphic novel fan and so my thing with Kahoot games was to choose a random comic book or superhero related name and see what got reactions, I like teaching people about this stuff if they ask so that was always fun. Thanks for helping me dig up the memories!

Balderdash-good to introduce new vocabulary. Have kids invent definitions and write them down, bonus points if they got it right. Read a few and have everyone vote on the one they think is right. Stump the teacher (one teacher actually pulled out a stump to sit on. I'd do it the last 10 minutes of class on Fridays. The kids can ask any science question (without looking at the book). If they knew the answer and I didn't, they got a piece of candy. (I'd let them have a win now and then even if I knew it, especially if it was a kid that didn't usually participate).

I have found tht a lot of teachers don’t know how to deal with kids with ADHD and the way tht kids with it learn changes from child to child and if u r not engaging them and force them to sit still and embarrass them by demanding they sit still u have fully lost tht kid may as well send them home for the rest of the day cause they r done with u and the whole day. Thts a good portion of my education experience and definitely contributed to my lack of effort

DESTROYING my students during Blookit has become my new favorite pastime. Another thing you might want to do is partner with another teacher (if possible) that teaches the same grade. If they're doing Blookit and you are not, get the code. If you have fast finishers (that get things correct at least 75%) give them the code to log in to the game and play against the other class. My Science "Son" and I did this toward the end of the year with our 8th graders and we DIED laughing with their comments! "Mr. W...we got some unauthorized hoodlums in our game!" [Actual student words!] I LOST IT when I heard it. Not only do you get extra review for the kids, but they get to compete against people that they know but don't see during class time too! ❤️😍🥰

I have been trying to grasp the Graphic novels - good - bad? So feel better about grandsons obsession with them! Already good readers so thinking shouldn't they move on? But maybe any reading is good...
@daniellered1143 ай бұрын
All reading is good reading! What I'd just be mindful of is that some graphic novels are not child appropriate. It's an easy assumption that they're 'cartoons' and for kids, but some have really adult content!
@adamleer13 ай бұрын
Agree. My 12 year old grandson and I were discussing Manga as maybe not appropriate. Unfortunately they will have older friends around and what is forbidden becomes tempting. I had never realized (naive grandmother) how far R some graphic novels have gotten so it was an interesting conversation) which did not endear graphic novels to me!
@daniellered1143 ай бұрын
@@adamleer1 but the same can be said for NA and YA novels. Covers and blurbs can mean things SEEM appropriate but really aren't. I just think sometimes parents are a little bit less aware of stuff if it has pictures in as they automatically assume it'll be appropriate, but may still need discussion.
