Did anyone forget that Triton has brown hair just like most his daughters? Also since Poseidon is said to have black hair and I think it's said that his wife had blonde hair? So the daughters with black and blonde hair could have inherited the hair colors from their grandparents.

So I think that a mermaids tale color is random at birth and has nothing to do with gene’s. I have to disagree with you on a couple of things, mermaids would be considered mammals and countless sea animals give live birth like dolphins and Sharks. If you compare the tail of a mermaid to the tail of a dolphin, they look remarkably identical, so I believe mermaids would give live birth. Instead of saying mermaids are "half Human, half fish", it's time we correctly say mermaids are half human and half dolphin", they aren't fish at all, they are actually mammals. Also, the fact that Ariel's sisters don't look like Athena or Triton doesn't mean they aren't their biological daughters, I look nothing like my mom or dad, but I actually look like my great-grandfather (mom's grandfather). My brother also doesn't look like my mom or dad either, he looks a lot like our grandfather (mom's dad) Ariel's sisters could have gotten the appearance from other family members.

I just figured that king triton was cursed by Ursula that he would never find love till he reached the last of the seven seas . And that the only reason he had different looking daughters was because he had multiple wives each dying one after the other and being the daughter of each kingdom from each 7 seas . Him Marrying the daughters of those kingdoms and fathering their children to not only claim title of king of that sea but also to ensure royalty bloodlines and positions WERENT interfered with by normal mermaids and since he didn’t get to know most of the daughters he was with or maybe knowing his fate - he grew to accept it and move on even after they passed , he never really showed affection or interest with any of them simply just because they were only matched to breed and simply because they were going to die either way .- but when it came to Athena , she mothered his children as if they were her own and was mostly by his side which made him fall inlove with her the most and treasure her the most .I think that king triton really wasn’t that open to female mermaids because they were just generally so many in the belief system of mermaid kind but with Athena it was different and that slightest moment where he did show affection, the love of his life was stripped from him and that’s why he was so harsh and strict with his daughters , most notably Ariel , the youngest daughter that resembled his late wife. And that thing I mentioned in the beginning of the comment “till he reached the last of the seven seas” I think that king triton thought that since he got with Athena , the last princess of the last sea (the Red Sea) that the curse was broken and that he did indeed fall inlove with her , that the nightmare would stop but since she died like the many before her - he just went into a complete loss and shock now having no one by his side , he had to raise all his daughters once more but this time broken and alone . Feeling guilt and anger , he projected that anger towards humans (for taking his wife) and himself for being the reason it happened. And I think that the curse finally broke not when Ursula died in the movie but when he learnt to let his little mermaid find her own happiness showing his real love for the the last of the seven seas (metaphor for seven daughters)

something else to think about when referencing spawning... it's in the Water. meaning when the daddy fish (or fishES) lay down their... erm... _stuff..._ it's not that precise. basically, tritan might have meant to only make One baby but the Current had other ideas. so he may not have been unfaithful _on purpose,_ it's just how things ended up being. also, scientifically, red/auburn/brown and some shades of blond are actually not that far apart. you can have one person with blond hair have a baby with somebody with black hair and end up with a whole spectrum of shades in between. and if you have other colorations in your family's blood line, guess what... things got even More dicey. people think of genetics like hair/eye/etc colors as being an either/or sitch. It could be also that King Triton was attempting to sire a heir properly and a good match Queen as well but it didn´t happened well untill he met Athena and got with her Ariel, but neverthless though leaving his other previous mistresses attempts he didn´t give up responsability on being properly the father for the other six elder girls, though indeed Ariel was ever always the favorite and rightfull one main heiress. Furtherlymore if the theory of Ursula being actually half-biological sister of King Triton - as well herself also biological half-sister from her raising sister Morgana - and all the failures on the previous spouses or attempted-wives of Triton was something which actually involved Ursula meddling there untill he finally find out why all that didn´t worked on, and so expelled Ursula from the palace - as she quotes in the original movie - and so was able to get settled on with Athena and both had Ariel while rasing as well the previous six mermaid girls half-sisters between all on the same family.

Did you forget that Poseidon was a god? Gods are not known for being faithful to one spouse. And there is no guarantee that merfolk breed like fish. They could go about it like dolphins. In which case, Ariel's mom would know if she had a child she didn't give birth to. All the differences could just come down to the animators wanting to have some diversity among the sisters.

A bit redundant to say given the amount of comments that say the same, but it's still entirely possible that this theory isn't true. That said, it's still a plausible theory, but here's one that I propose that is similar to this one, but flipped on its head. Queen Athena is indeed their birth mom, but when it comes to King Triton, he is NOT the father... at least to most of them. Here's how I see it: the only one directly related to Triton himself is Ariel, having her mother's looks, but Triton's eyes, and potentially recessive tail fin genes. Aquata was a potential candidate to also be a true daughter of Triton as she shares the same hair color as him and the same tail color as both, but then I noticed she has brown eyes, whereas Triton as blue eyes and Athena green, making it genetically impossible for him to be her father, though still possible for Athena to be the mother.(granted, in the original movie and tv series they all have blues eyes, but that's just a continuity error and the canonicity of the series is very questionable to me due to some contradictions with TLM3 and Adella being a little chubby for whatever reason. I primarily view them in the 3rd movie and all their eyes differ from one another, so that's what I'm going with) If this is the case, and if mermaids do procreate like fish, then it's entirely possible that Triton was lacking in the "fertilizing" process and some other mermen happened to plant their seed in the same vicinity without realizing the eggs weren't theirs to inseminate. It would explain why all of them have different colored fins, why one has black hair and two are blonde and why only Aquata has brown eyes. So, still Ariel's half sisters in the end, just all sharing a biological mother instead. Or their all adopted except Ariel, that's also possible. Just as a side note, I still don't believe that Triton and Ursula are siblings, even if it's half siblings. While we don't know for sure who her father is, we at least know her mother had the same lower half. Even then, I doubt her kind are physically capable of procreating with traditional merfolk because of that one difference. And that whole thing came from a scrapped concept, automatically eliminating it's canonicity, and no, the Broadway musical isn't canon, at least as far as I can tell. Though again, adoption still possible but unlikely.

He is a King and ruled all the Ocean and Atlantis, it would be normal for him to have concubines that hailed from the highest nobles who took care of the areas he couldn't visit more than once a year. These concubines would most likely reside in a fully separate area, and be expected to have sons and daughters, all would know the Queen as their Mother even if she didn't biologically give birth to them, and would be placed in an area for them once they no longer needed milk that women make in the first bit of time after birth, then a wetnurse would be assigned to the child, who then basically became their nurse, nanny, and maid after they reached the time to be presented to the nobility, they would then be given a younger servant girl/boy, and their nanny/maid would be assigned to a younger child if they were still young enough, or allowed to retire with a "generous" bit of money all at once or monthly payment until they got set up with a home and reconnected with their own families and children. My theory that green Athena she came from Neptune she was one of the lagoon mermaids that came from Neverland in Peter Pan there are six lagoon mermaids so she probably left the kingdom and Neverland to explore the ocean and then she discovered Atlantica and then she met King Triton because she was different to other mermaids because they don’t come from the same kingdom so there is a difference between Atlantica and the kingdom in Neptune so it’s a different kingdom a different tribe so there is some similarities when Queen Athena left Neptuno to discover outside a kingdom to explore the ocean 🌊 so it is interesting that he had seven mistresses so probably when Athena was one of the selling mistresses with the Laguna mermaids that includes her sister is of course Athena Atlanteia Chelan but in peter pan they look good mermaids are considered vicious savage jealous lazy but kind of the time but they are territorial so probably they were crazy for King Triton of course before when he became king he was a prince so they all wanted to marry the prince one of them wanted try in front of themselves I know that it’s a crazy theory but it has to be the case

Another thing Ursula is not dead and triton belongs to persidon and Athena was hit by hook if you would look it up you would find this out about Disney and find out that they was in the mermaid cove that it shows on Peter pan when she was killed you would also find out that all the Disney movies are connected

DNA can skip a generation, or two, so is not weird for the siblings to have different hair colors, I'm the youngest out of five kids in my family, and I am the only one with red hair, my parents have brown hair my sisters have brown hair and my brother have brownish blonde hair. So it's normal for siblings and families alike to have different hair colors and looks.

My guess is Ariel is from a line of Persephone since Triton is underwater, the underworld. That's likely why she longed to live above like Persephone longed to return above home as well.

I think all of them being outside affairs is a stretch. If u look at all of them closely they all actually share the same face template. It’s altered slightly in the face like they make one fattier one longer. One skinnier. Because no siblings even twins look exactly alike. We all have minor or major differences. Yet I’ll give u 2 or 3. As for hair eye and fin color. U have to think about who their ancestors are and Trítōn and his wife may possess the genes that passed on to some of the girls hair which makes them red, brown , blonde and black. Now being he was a king, and most royals in the younger days want more than one women and had 3 outside children. And raised them as they were his and his wife’s and they went through a rough patch. But as king he could do that and she had to stay with him. Eventually they worked through it.
