In the video I explore what you get when you're looking at a Rolls Royce Silver for around £5000. It maybe cheap but is it worth it and are the repairs going to be too much?

There are two things to remember when buying a Rolls-Royce. Firstly there is nothing more expensive than a cheap Rolls-Royce & “If you can’t afford a good one, you really can’t afford a bad one!” Now I know you can but it’s worth remembering. I’ve had two Rolls-Royces and they are lovely and reliable but they started as good cars when I bought them. Good luck.

I own a Bentley T1 1970. I saw the car advertised in a classic car publication. It was advertised for £5,500. It had an existing M.O.T. I accepted it on face value. I inspected the car it looked okay. I decided to re- upholster the seats and door cards £10,400. The M.O.T. was due, at the time it was 39 years old so required the test. 😮 The car was badly deteriorated new floor pan, inner & outer scills, wheel arches, jacking points £5,500. Bare metal respray £5,000, complete rebuild braking system £7,500. Replaced suspension spheres £3,600. Stainless exhaust £1,200. It goes on and on. At the moment it is being rewired ?? don't know yet how much. Upgraded lights £600. Electronic ignition supply & fit £820. L.P.G. conversion £1,400. These cars are a joy to drive but an absolute money pit.

I second this comment, I brought a £9k SY. Spent £6k on it. Sold it for £2k. Too far gone I was far too optimistic and it cost me dearly. Now saved up for the right car with better knowledge and better budget.

The dash hasn't been modified, the leather dries and shrinks from the sun, and it's pulled the wooden framework around the vents apart. This is common, but you'll either need another dash top, or to recover that with new leather. The tab on the window frame is to guide the glass into the channel as it rises, wind pressure can tilt it outwards while moving. The woodwork looks like the veneer is still there and fairly flat, what's come off is the lacquer, it'll make it easier to strip and re-lacquer - if the veneer itself is peeling that's a far more expensive repair. The low rear suspension is because there's no pressure in the hydraulic rams that level it, should rise up once the engine is running. Unless you do a lot of the work yourself, this is going to cost more than it'll be worth.

I owned Rolls-Royces and Bentleys for years. That being said, i think you have a good idea. I would pay more and get one that is in better shape for more money. There is noting more expensive than a cheap rolls royce. From what I see on this car, it could be free and its still going to cost more than buying a better car.

These early 80s Rolls-Royce Silver Spirits do look very antiquated and aren't the best examples unless absolutely mint. Dodgy colours and dated unloved interiors didn't help much. The facelifted models from the early to mid 90s are a much better prospect in terms of build quality and general condition and in the right colour they can look fantastic even today.

My friend owns a quite nice looking Bentley Turbo R which has some similarities to this Royce. He decided to put it in to be tidied but when they dug into it they found rot almost everywhere. He kind of became committed to sorting it out but over a year later the spend is already at £20k. Both screens had to be removed and new metal let in. It needed new front wings and cutting in new rear wind sections. Both front/back valances were rotten along with much in the wheel arches. The sills were rotten, the interior removed to facilitate repairs and so it goes on. My advice is DO NOT try to recover this car, it's really not worth it, plus it's not that desirable and in my opinion it's a crap colour. £5,000 isn't cheap, they should give it you you.

New subscriber here. A Jag and Land Rover products fan primarily and then Rolls Royce, Bentley and such like follower, your channel has spraked an interest. If you can get that Rolls for £4k or beterr still less and doing the work yourself you should ALL being well and subject to getting going and seeing under the car be on the right side of an inclusive £10k budget. That was lacquer coming off the dash. It wil be tricky to do right unless you take the dash out. The brakes and suspension could be expensive to sort out? I don't really know enough about them. As for trips to Europe, not that bothered myself. However, doing up and saving a Rolls Royce, YES! Especially watching someone with limited mechanical experience because it helps grow your channel and creates interest in the brand of Rolls Royce. Plenty of videos on other makes, not many true ones where a young chap takes on a Rolls Royce!

Chris. Hi. You can still make really excellent content from a very good RR Silver Spirit which are selling at most Classic Car Auctions for reasonable money. There's always stuff to do on them. Your heart ❤️ may want to save the unwell one's but save yourself a lot of pain. For example, Bonhams Auctions UK recently sold a beautiful 1986 Silver Spirit for less than 5K in outstanding condition compared to the one here. It even had a private plate that went with it. That includes buyers premium too. Thanks for the content and all the best to you.

Absolute money pit. I visited a RR restorers in Essex a few weeks ago, an had a tour around their body shop. I asked one of the guys how much a respray cost, and he told me everying would be stripped out and the body taken back to bare metal. That would cost about £30k. There`s a reason you can pick thses old tanks up for a few grand, and that is that they rot like pears and cost a fortune to keep tin worm at bay.

It's heartbreaking to see a neglected classic car, but even more so if it's an 80s Rolls-Royce still with the first owner. The left doors look like they've had a bad spray job, the shade is completely different. I'm surprized there's so much sun damage given that the car's in the UK, where it's primarily overcast and raining. 😉 Walk away, if you want a Silver Spirit find one that's been loved, this owner just didn't care, and that's a dangerous proposition.

The fact the car has not been used much for a few months and left outside for 30 years it certainly has signs of rot. The rear window seals etc all needs replacing the metal may be beyond repair. The body paint could be circa 10k to fix. The rear arches and sills will cost probably £6k to fix. The interior wood refinish would be £2k, the mechanicals for the hydraulic systems and brakes budget £4k , Suspension springs if needed and replacing £3k, Full service and fluids assuming mechanically its "ok" budget £2-3k so that the hoses etc can be done including fuel and brake lines - so quite a lot. - Top money for a fully original or restored car in prime condition is circa 35 -40k so there is room but not much. If the channel can fund it then it would be interesting but it will take a lot of time to get done. Even at £5k it's expensive really at the condition it is in as a starting point. Conservative fixing costs would be circa £20k assuming that there is nothing sinister underneath. Perhaps get a specialist near you to do an assessment. - Its better to buy a better condition car perhaps - still good content

Hi Chris, my advice is leave it. You know the territory you are in with RR resprays, and that is just for starters. You are looking at a total money pit, which really makes little sense when you have such a large number of Silver Spirits currently on the market and at reasonable money for a nice one. Odd thing about this one is the wheels, they appear pressed steel and by 1986 RR cars where fitted with alloys? Also, the first version of the Spirit was certainly not the best with suspension issues etc. The series 2 and 3 were much better, and the final version had wrap around coded bumpers, centre console, modern door mirrors and was basically a modern car. Some people feel that this model was the last real Rolls Royce.

Hi Chris, I so want to advise you to purchase the car and make a series showing the restoration of the car, and having a glorious finale driving off into the sunset. However,…..i think there are more experienced contributors on here who are advising against this car, and on balance I think they are correct. It’s a RR , and it obviously has that presence about it, but I think that every time you got an invoice for work done on it, you would be questioning your decision. I think it’s probably a good idea to pass on this example, and check out an alternative. Jeez,…..I hope I’m right…. Good video Chris Cheers John

I've got a 1986 Bentley Turbo R. Rolls Royce and Bentleys do not like being stored outside. Luckily, mine just fits in my garage. I make KZbin videos with it on my channel and it's been featured by JJ On Cars

I know it’s a shame. But at one point it was the gents everyday car. So being outside wouldn’t have mattered too much. But lack of use in more recent years has affected it. Thanks for watching.

Aesthetically speaking what a beautiful shaped roller. Dare I say I personally would rather it over the Phantom. Please buy it and slowly do it up yourself. Not an awful lot of money to buy and roadworthy. Sometimes you just have to ignore your head and go with your heart ♥️

Great idea re an old SY or SZ. That particular SZ spirit is absolutely ROOTED it’s a parts car it will cost a fortune to bring it all back there are better ones. Dash has pealed back that leather has shrunk. Engine overheated , rusted to hell….. it just went from bad to worse..Roadworthy or not nothing on that spirit will be cheap to redo. My advice is RUN dont do it to yourself on that cluncker.

Unless you can do all the work yourself, just walk away. It would obviously be great for the channel but if your looking at a total respray after sorting the rust issues, it will cost you thousands just to get that done to a standard that will justify being a Rolls Royce. I would look for a vehicle in better condition and unfortunately price increase will reflect this. This car is cheap and you can see why.

True, it’s a bit boxy and not quite old enough yet to be a collectible classic. The shadow is picking up in value for the better examples. I think the Spirit is now the bottom of the Rolls market now. 10 years that might be my Phantom! Lol

I think the Bentley is a better looking car. The round headlights make all the difference. Having said that, there are some real bargains out there in the 6-7k mark. You just have to know what your looking at.
