Swtor is not that, but it seems to me that these will be closer to world quests from WoW where you get random events spawning for small groups to break up the monotony of leveling/questing. Dynamic events is older than guild wars 2. I think the big one that started it was an MMO called "Rift" which was titled as such because of its "new feature" the Rift system where planar "rifts" would open up on the open world and players nearby would be able to help each other out to "seal" the rift and get rewards from the rift. Most MMO's have something like this now with Guild wars, and FF XIV being examples. SWTOR is now just catching up to these games with these mechanics.

The dynamic event encounters worked really well in City of Heroes. It was an alien invasion as ships would descend in a zone. The mobs were much more powerful than the normal mobs in that zone. The event would pop up in a zone and regular mobs would head for a building. It was exciting. Players would drop what they were doing and form pockets of resistance as others would trickle in from other zones. (There would be a city wide alert broadcast telling which zone was being invaded.) That was long before Guild Wars 2 was written.

Saying this you brought up a good point about how the game can slow up when many players are around for an event. Will see what happens, but I think the dynamic encounters are a good start, more similar to fates in FF online I think. I would still love to see events such as a dark side force taking over a town and you and other light side players having to stop them or dark side players being alerted to a jedi camp or republic presence growing on a planet and you have to kill the leader or team or something like that and vice versa. Just to make the galaxy feel more alive and active. Can get cool ingame rewards or cosmetic gears after a certain amount of achievements. Or new armour and weapons in general.

I think this is good idea. The world feels INCREDIBLY static. Like running around a 3D photograph. Hopefully this will breathe at least a little life into the worlds. Even if this initial implementation isn't great, as long as it's just decent the developers can iterate on it and improve it over time.

It's not just a Guild Wars thing. City of Heroes has Zombie invasion events, Prison Breakouts, Giant monster rampages, etc. that pop up in different zones periodically. So, it's not a new idea, no. No idea if it will come off well, or not. We'll have to see. The game itself, is quite old of course, so I agree it would breathe a lot of life into the game if they could add something completely new to the game (new planet, new races/classes, more class-based story arcs, etc.).

I remember something like this in RIFT, an old MMO that was good at one time. Enemy hordes would invade player outposts and cities at times, and it would be up to the players to defeat and liberate these places. If players didn't, the outposts would remain conquered for several day/nightrotations, which was a long time before despawning.

The first improvement they need to make is to drop the physical zone barriers and make the world actually feel like a world. SW Galaxies was able to do it years before this game got released so they are more than capable. Mounts that actually fly would help. Returning to class specific storyline would also help. The immersion is broken for me when I have a scoundrel doing the eternal empire and I have to out "force" valkorian. Lastly, and this is a pipe dream I know, maybe a third faction? A Hutt cartel faction that gets smugglers and BHs out of their current factions and back into their own. The War/knight for the huttcartel can get a beast master and the Cons/Inq is the slicer. The bh replacement is an Imperial Guard, and the smug replacement is a Rep Ambassador (giving a shout out to Leia)

My question is why they aren't revolutionizing or making overhauls to the space battles/space missions that you can complete? They're missing out on huge opportunities for large-scale galactic battles, like those in Battlefront. Have us fight against new and dynamic enemy fleets- not just Empire and Republic, but the Hutts, the Eternal Empire's remnants, the droids and AI ships we fought during the last major storyline, hell even pit us against some of Star Wars' major space beasts like the the summa-verminoth, the scree or ridadi! There could be really cool invasion missions, where new and unique factions, from pirates to lesser Imperial allies, would appear over planets and fight for control of them. We see lots of the base game's fighting happen during story missions, but when you're venturing out, you don't see a lot of diversity anymore. If they want the game to stay alive at all, or to bring in new players, they need to make changes to the systems that no longer work or carry interest.

when I heard about it, my first thought was actually FFXIV's FATE system, not what GW2 does it's just a world event that spawns. anyone can join. and there are a variety of them. some will have you defend a location. some will just have you kill a bunch of mobs in an area (most will, actually). sometimes that leads to a boss, sometimes not. sometimes it's about gathering stuff and delivering it to an NPC none of it has any real effect on the wider world the way they do in GW2, but they are an ok source of EXP if nothing else. especially if you cannot run dungeons yet or are waiting in the DPS queue

Only took them 13 years to add dynamic events.

Games before GW2 had this type of content. I remember it in rift but I think the first time I saw events like this would be Warhammer online.

"major holiday" just small boring quests in existing planets

GW2 was released in 2012, open world dynamic quests were first big in Warhammer Online: AOR released in 2008... =)

You’re like the 8th person to say that haha. Do keep in mind I said they *mastered* this event type, I did not say create. GW2 is the best example for this type of event :)

This is just an opinion of an OG gamer, I remember when Star Wars Galaxies had open world conflicts like this, its not really a new thing and its defiantly not something Guild Wars 2 originated in their game. I remember grouping up with a bunch of people to take out a Krayt Dragon on Tatooine and get the the chance of a pristine Krayt pearl dropping. If SWTOR is going to do this they need to go big to breath life back into the game I used to play SWTOR all the time back when it launched in 2011 then after they went free to play and added all the cash shop items things went down hill I want to love the game but in its current state I cannot.

Now that I understand what this new system is I have my doubts as to how successful it will be. Currently we have 2 events running side by side Galactic Seasons 7 and The Feast of Prosperity! Now on Wednesday I spent the better part of my day doing nothing while trying to locate a group for two GS7 objectives because the majority of the player base was a doing Feast of Prosperity missions or b sleeping (because I am in an opposite timezone to that of the USA) Note Weekly Quest Reset for me is 8pm Tuesday night! While the current player base is spread so thin I would guess once the novelty wears off most solo players will end up ignoring them especially when you need many players. Hopefully I am wrong

This is a DIRECT take from SWG where you had Darth Vader land with a bunch of clones in random cities. Rebels were given the chance to attack and take back that city.

It's not quite as intricate as that. So far it's just "Mob spawns in front of town, you kill mobs, then kill a walker, then you're done and nothing else changes at all and they all respawn about 30 minutes later.

Guild Wars 2 also didnt create open world events ^^ Warhammer online public quests, which went onto RIFTs in Rift, then GW2. Honestly happens in WoW too. I dont mind so much as its new content ^^

I’ll take it. It’s better than constant date nights updates, and hopefully, as it develops, it’ll get better.

WoW also "stole" Mythic plus, which is/was the Fractals of the mists system in Guild Wars 2.

Don’t let the developers step outta line with certain "ideas" that destroyed other IP'a.
@jacobruiter592Ай бұрын
I've been saying this for YEARS, Arena net and Guild Wars 2 have been actually evolving and improving the MMO genre in clever ways. WoW and Blizzard taking one idea was proof enough for me.

I'm having trouble naming an MMO that's still active as of right now without open-world dynamic group quest event things. WoW, GW2, FF14, Throne and Liberty... about the only one now that doesn't have it is BDO and that's because it's a sandbox not a theme park style.
@loremasterxp3635Ай бұрын
Appreciate the update. These timed events they're bringing in sound marginally interesting but ultimately very repetitive.
@SkylerStarkweatherАй бұрын
This is such a small feature for a game with so much more potential than that. It just shows that the developers dont have any imagination for new things for the game. Just cheap copies of other games ideas.

Warhammer Online came out with the Public Quest system. This is what that sounds like. GW2 took it to the next level, but these guys just did the bare minimum... Like usual.

I wish they would bring this to consoles.

I do agree with almost everything you've stated, but I don't think any pressure will be worth the effort. Tbh from my point of view all hope was already lost about 7-8 years ago, if not earlier. I guess they never fixed the performance problems engraved deeply into the engine because they simply don't know how to. All they know is to do basic maintenance stuff and create some fluff for CM, the rest of the content that drips onto us over the course of an "addon" has been so bare bones or broken that it might as well have been done by trainees that got canned afterwards. 🤕
@MegumiMooАй бұрын
I'm with you on the "fix yourselves before you add open world features" bus. I've been playing since 2012 (off and on) and I love (most of) the stories. That's always been the draw for me. I can handle the general slow downs and over population for events because the story is good, but imagine the way the servers are rn and picture it 100 fold when the game is blossomed out. It'll be original ffxiv all over again, where square had to scrap *Everything*, fix their infrastructure, and try again with ARR.

I wish they will put in weather and stuff like that in the game long with night and day as well.
@SWCentral18 күн бұрын
That would be cool :) That being said, they’ve added new zones to some planets. ord Mantell had a new zone and it’s night time there :) as opposed to day time in the starter area. Would be cool to have them cycle though!

The best thing they can do to this game is to copy the monetization strategy and progression (horizontal) of Guild Wars 2/ESO. Star Wars should be a *coop* story driven MMORPG, the story should be able to be done with a party of 5 and everyone should progress it at the same time.
Ай бұрын
A subscription system is just plain greedy when they have shop monetization. They should release expansions and stories and you could use in game store to buy those expansions and story, as GW2 is doing.
