You won't believe what happens in this resin experiment! My curiosity led me to an afternoon of tinkering with various combinations and proportions. With each careful measurement and calculated mix, the resin seemed to take on a life of its own. The transformations were unexpected, and the process became a dance between control and chaos. It was a vivid reminder that experimentation isn't just about outcomes, but about embracing the journey of discovery itself.

I have an idea for you. Instead of pouring a lot of resin in the first stage, only pour in enough to hold the first cm of the water-containing sphere in place then you won’t have it moving around where you don’t want it. After that you’re free to pour however much you want without worrying about the sphere moving. Just a thought. Thanks for always being so transparent with us! You’ve always given me much to think about with your projects. I appreciate you!

Vegetable glycerin works well as a liquid. You can also buy the empty baubles that are one piece. The hanger part is a metal cap and it pops off for filling it. It works great because that filling spot is all you need to seal.

Where do you get the clear, empty ornaments? Here where I live it's a very small town. We do have a Michaels and a Dollar Tree and Dollar General. Looking online hasn't been any more successful than looking in the craft stores. All I have found are the large clear ones. I've been wanting to find the inch, inch and a half sizes.

Instead of just water you could try clear PVA glue (Elmer's in the US) and water. About 50-50 of each. The glue gives it a little slower move like the oil would do.

Suggestion; try a small water filled balloon or make a hollow silicone sphere with a plug to create a recess. Fill the mold almost to the top with resin, or too the top of you can make a channel, let harden, remove the recess mold, fill with liquid and close.

I've read if you add some glycerin to the water it will make it more like the traditional snow globe consistency. For centering in the larger molds, if you do them in layers it may be easier to get them centered and to keep the plastic bag toward the bottom. You could also use the plastic filler gems, Saran wrap, Christmas icicles, Easter grass, that sort of thing to fill it in on the bottom and or the sides to help center it.
@darylpepper2256
@darylpepper2256 Жыл бұрын
I think if you add just enough resin to touch the bottom or just a 1/4 of the way up the water globe then let cure, it may keep it centered . Just an idea.😊 Just read the other comments and others have the same idea 😂

Once possible alternative, change the order of the steps: 1) Glue up bobble, cut hole (or use clear glass bobbles) 2**) put some sticky putty on the end of a pencil or dowel, insert it into the empty bobble so it sticks to the bottom, and use this to position the bobble in the mold 3) pour resin part way and let cure 4**) Remove dowel, fill and seal bobble 5) do second resin pour. It seems that doing things in this order should allow you more control over the bobble positioning without any worries about relative density and curing movement.

It looked close to working. Maybe you could try it with a thin layer of clear resin in the mold and let that cure. After that, use the spheres like you prepared them in this video and use a small bit of UV resin to make them stay in the center on that thin layer with the UV light. After that is cured, add the rest of the colored resin. It seems like it would work. You were onto something with sealing the spheres with UV resin. Maybe the IV resin is the trick for holding the spheres in the center too.

I have made skulls with suspended orbs in them. I used the round ornaments that are solid and have the metal hanger bit on the end you pull out to fill. I think those work better than the two piece globes like you used. I fill them and use uv resin to set a piece of acetate on to seal. I pour some resin in the mold and let it set, so then I have a solid base to set the orb down on to. Fill halfway with resin, ensuring the orb is upright and not leaking. (I have used baby oil, mineral oil, water and glycerin mix. So far I like the oils best.) once you know it's not leaking fill the rest of the way.

I wonder if the globes moved around because of temperature differences between the curing resin and the liquid inside the globe? Possibly using something thicker, like a wire, to hold the globe in place might work. A thicker bit of wire attached with a big glob of UV resin should hold without needing a knot or bend, and then you could pluck it out of the resin when you're ready for pour 2.

Maybe, if you, instead of the nylon thread, used something like a stick, and glued that to the ball temporarily until the first batch of resin cures, then remove the stick and pour the white layer. A stick wouldn't be able to .ove in the resin, and you could have the inner ball exactly where you want it.

Why did you use such a large bit on the dremmel for a hole? There are diamond bits that make much smaller holes and tiny little funnels that will fit inside the hole. Doing things like this, I prefer simple mineral oil. It's cheap and gives that viscosity that water doesn't. The weight of the mineral oil also helps to hold the inner bits in place as where water will easily move against where the resin wants to go. However, do you know why the baby oil didn't work? That should be mostly mineral oil. It should have worked if everything was sealed properly. Did you actually drill a hole in the tongue depressor? I'm not clear as to why you did that especially if you were going to use UV to keep it in place. I'm not clear on what you were going for with the baggie, but there should have been no problem sealing with baby oil if you cleaned the zipper bit ... or even if you didn't because, well, zipper. If you want to be absolutely sure the bag stays in place, perhaps you should zap it with a drop of UV resin where you want it to be anchored. Again, water is lighter than resin, so the baggie will move ... unless you match (relatively) the weight and viscosity of the fluid in the baggie to that of the resin, so mineral oil would be better and likely why the water didn't work well. This is simple physics, that most folks don't consider. A thicker liquid will move a thinner one, or , a more massive (more viscous) fluid will displace a less massive (thinner) one. That's oversimplified, but you get it. "Massive" doesn't equal "weight". They're two totally different things in terms of fluid dynamics. Fill a baggie with water and epoxy will displace it. Baby oil (depending on what it's made of) is slightly thinner than mineral oil, so it's going to displace more than plain mineral oil. Honey is about the viscosity and weight of epoxy, but I've never seen clear honey, so that's a problem. The question becomes, how do we make a liquid as viscous as honey without any color? Solve that riddle, and you solve every one of your issues. Except for the gravity part, which is easy to fix. a couple of shims and a level will fix that, and might actually fix it to the point where you don't have to find a fluid that is equally as viscous and massive as the resin. Ya'll didn't know this is all about elementary physics, did you? Well, it is, so chalk it up to education!
