I love the idea of lost rolling stock. It’s not just our model railways either. When I was working in Melbourne a few years ago one of my mates on the Puffing Billy Railway told me the story of his dad who worked for Victorian Railways in the 1950’s. VR realized they had quite a lot of stuff on their stock lists which seemed to have disappeared over the years. My mates dad was asked to update the inventory and to try and locate the missing items. He found wagons out in the outback that had jumped the track at some time and just been left where they were, some were in sidings at long abandoned way stations that had been forgotten. The most amusing story though was an incident at Port Melbourne. After a rough shunt a wagon got shoved through the buffers and fell off the end of the pier into the water. The customer who’s load was on board was naturally rather upset, so they sent a diver down with instructions to locate it and attach chains so it could be lifted out with a crane. Down he went, only to resurface after a few minutes and ask « which one do you want? ». Apparently there were about half a dozen down in the mud, there’d been quite a few incidents of the same type over the years but the port staff had kept quiet 😂 So there you go, there really is « a prototype for everything »!!!

A really interesting account! Prior to computerised accounting I suspect similar happened in many places. There was a 16t mineral wagon discovered in a disused canal basin fairly recently near here. Rumoured to have gone in after running away on an incline, no doubt never officially admitted to.

Glad I'm not the only one then!! The pleasant surprises you get when you find that forgotten about wagon or carriage. It becomes that yippee moment!!!! And the Hereford Model shop is my local place to go. It's an Aladdin's Cave of all things model railways. Brilliant video Jenny.

I must admit I am amazed at seeing some of these liveries and think they would look ideal on a rake of heritage coaches. it was also fascinating to finally see in detail where the line comes up from the fiddle yard. This has added an additional dimension to Wier Yard, and I love the way that you are able to demonstrate your knowledge of the rolling stock.

a) you need to catalogue your rolling stock. b) you need a CCTV camera in the fiddle yard (it may not be a good enough view to see what's in it, but you could at least see if anything derails) c) add barcodes or RFID to rolling stock bottoms and scan each road as they enter and leave the fiddle yard so a computer can track what's in each lane.
@GameHammerCG2 жыл бұрын
I keep telling her to get some cameras down there but apparently there’s no space because the stock would hit them when going in and out. :(

Hi Jenny. You have just cost me £160 (LOL). I have long admired the RTC livery, so I have just ordered four coaches in the series (Laboratory 23, Test Car 6, Laboratory 10 and Laboratory 11) from the Bachmann Collectors Club. It was really interesting to see such a wide variety of coaches in your collection. How do you like the Intercity Swift livery?
@JenniferEKirk2 жыл бұрын
The RTC livery is interesting. I do love Intercity - it reminds me of the trains running when I was at school.

It is similar to the camping coach (not shown) and I think Bachmann reused the curtain insert on both.

@@JenniferEKirk One problem with my fiddle yard came as a result of th evolution of the scenic area. When I made it slightly wider on one side, I didn't take into account the fact I couldn't reach the far line in the event a train stops/derails/to clean the track (Doh!)

I transfer my coaches and similar wagons to storage containers from Hobbycraft because I transport them to my club. I also keep most of my collection in a 20ft storage container that is nine miles from home. Not ideal. I have just received my Accurascale TPE coach set and my locomotive is in the container grrrrr!
