Elderberry (Sambucus sp.) is a shrub. A shrub is a woody perennial, smaller than a tree, usually with several stems. Bush is not a recognized taxonomic term. Sambucus is in the Caprifoliaceae family with honeysuckles and Vibrunums, etc. Just a note from your friendly plant taxonomist in Morgantown, WV.

I made a bunch of tinctures with stuff from my garden last year. I made dandelion, calendula, echinacea, rosemary goldenrod. I also made a bunch of tinctures out of leaves from fig, goji, blackBerry, raspberry, blueberry & strawberry. This was my 1st time doing stuff like this. It was also the 2nd year I did a garden. I am 54. I did do really small gardens in my 30's but it was just like a couple tomato, cucumber, & zucchini plants and that's about it. I became disabled enough not to be able to work just before my 50th birthday so learning these things allows me to have hobbies that are flexible to my disability. Hi Becky I have been following your channel for about a year now, and enjoy your content. I come from Denmark, and here it's tradition to make elderberry lemonade (or sirup) in a steam juicer to extract the juice, and then bring it to a boil and add sugar to taste. We add a little apples to the elderberry in the steamer. We add a preserve to it, for ir to last a year, but I imagine it could be water bath canned as well. It's really tasty. Also, we make a syrup from the elderberry flowers, and that tastes amazing. You rinse the flowers, and then you pour a hot syrup over them adding citric acid and sliced lemons (app. 50 flowers, 20 grams of citric acid and 4 lemons). This goes in the fridge for 4 days, stirring it daily. And then its sifted. it keeps about 3-4 months in the fridge. You won't believe the lemonade and cocktails, you can make from that. I hope you will try out these danish traditionals. :)

But I'm in the UK, where you can't go five steps without seeing elder, and the book is specifically a UK foraging book, so maybe there's something in the states that is an elder lookalike, you'd have to do some googling on that one :) hope this helps!

It's bc of the molecule found in the seeds (apples have this same molecule as well) & like Becky said: it does not take too much to render that molecule inactive so as long as you heat it up, the molecule is in active & can be eaten by humans & even given to chickens. Birds (especially wild birds) can eat these raw as God gave them a special adaptation to be able to eat raw & not die. If we, as human beings, happen to eat just a few raw elderberries or apple seeds (there are other fruits that have this molecule as well) it will not hurt us at all (nor the chickens).

I think that may actually be quicker than rooting cuttings. Since the roots are already there when I dug them up. Just wanted to throw that out there since you have some bushes near your home. Also when I make elderberry syrup I take my potato masher and smash the berries as they are cooking. I also add in star anise, clove, a knob of ginger and cinnamon sticks. The syrup turns out super dark just like your tincture did. I also freeze my mason jars of syrup and have used them up to two years after I make them.

At the end of January beginning of Feb. we cut ours down to about 6 inches from the ground. We take all the cuttings and plant them in pots with compost. and leave them outside. In the spring they start to sprout and root. We do make Elderberry tincture and syrup with outs as well as make Elderflower liquor with the flowers. When we drain our elderberry tincture and syrup we run the elderberries through a hand crank food mill and give the pulp to the chickens. They love it. We take elderberry tincture every morning before coffee or tea and take a shot of elderberry syrup before bedtime.

@@cynthiafisher9907 So you get berries or flowers...but I want both!! Thanks for the confirmation!

LOL, when you showed the plant picture, I said to myself 'ink plants'. As kids my brothers and I along with all the neighborhood kids used to mash up these berries and make ink out of them. My mom always made sure that we didn't think they were food.

Thanks for the reminder to go get some cuttings. I told my sister it was a great time to propagate cuttings and I forgot I need to do it! 😊😮😊

This was a very fun and educational video. I really like the idea of the Elderberry Oxymel. My sisters and I drove around the back country last year and harvested quite a bit of elderberries. Made up some syrup and put it in the freezer. Can't remember the recipe we used, but I wasn't a fan. It was nothing like yours, which sounds really good. I'll have to try that this year. Thanks for all the info!

Love this video! I started making tinctures a couple years ago now and I’d only made elderberry syrup. I’m going to try making the elderberry tincture next since that’s my preferred medium. I’ve started making tinctures from my loblolly pine needles which help the immune system as well but this variety I’ve found also helped with my brain fog I was having. I’m going to send some to my dad as he’s in his 80’s to help his brain function. I also make another brain concoction as well but haven’t tried taking it yet as I’ve had such success with my loblolly tincture. I love that it grows on my property and can make as much as I want! I’m going to start growing nettles and goldenrod as well for my allergies as I use both of those daily as well as echinacea as needed for colds and flus. It’s amazing what a difference these make for me! Nothing else helped me from the pharmaceutical world. Such a Godsend, truly. Love this content! 😊Also, ever made an elderberry glycerite?

I think if you clean that elderberry tree out a bit it might explode a bit with growth. What a lovely find for your new homestead

Elderberries are growing here in my home everywhere. But here in Austria we mainly use its flowers to make sirup. have you ever done sirpu from the small little flowers in spring? the sirup from its flowers is a favorite we love to make limonade from, also we mix it with Prosecco or wine. we also use it to season cakes. the berries itself we normally make jams, compote as roasted paste for pan cakes or Kaiserschmarrn.

Mum used to make rosehip syrup and steep sloe berries in gin to, for medicinal purposes of course 😉. Both of them grew wild with elder berry’s so you might find those too. Love watching your content

Try making a 50/50 mix of the alcohol/elderberry mixture 4 weeks I’d fine) and a simple syrup. 1:1 and it can be as sweet as you like. Keep it in the freezer to create an aquavit. Much like a limoncello lasts forever. Take small shot (sip) when you need a boost.

So exciting to find the elderberry bushes on your property ❤. This video was so helpful because it shows how easy it is to make elderberry tincture, syrup and oxymel.

Becky I make homemade elderberry syrup for myself all the time....I use....ceylon cinnamon sticks, rose hips, ground cloves, star anise, grated fresh ginger, and of course the dried elderberries....add needed amount of water to the mixture and bring to a boil and then simmer for 1 hour....when done I strain it and let it cool slightly then add my raw honey and blackberry concentrate for flavoring...Jar up and enjoy! 🙂I need to get me some of those shrink wraps...great idea!!

My sister has a giant black sambuca elderberry in her garden and the berry heads are like large dinner plates so I shall be going to hers to get some cuttings and also to harvest her berries to make tinctures, syrup & oxymel. I’m chronically ill and am always catching colds etc via my husband from my grandkids so Black Sambuca Elderberries to the rescue I love how tall her shrub gets it’s all purple and about 15/20ft tall before it gets cut down for winter. Looks absolutely delicious and I definitely saw a cocktail 🍸 being made 😉

Youve done a lot with seeds, a fair amount with bulbs and tuber type things, and i agree that you should begin to branch out (lol) into propogation with cuttings and stems. Three other things to work with are roses, native honey suckle vine, amd rhodies. I realize that rhodies arent your favorite but they are pretty fuss free when set in among the woods; early bloomers are important to the native, ground dwelling, big bumble bees as is the prostate, native, Oregon grape. - This said, during this season of winter and spring pruning a tactic is tomgatjer people's prunings then decide what to do with any that rooted up and are viable.

This was such a fascinating video! I have always wanted to delve more into making “home remedies”. My grandmother used to make them up every harvest season and dose us whenever she caught the slightest inkling of a sniffle. lol. On another note, today I am using your recipe for French bread to try a creative approach to a roll type dish. Once the dough is ready to be shaped, I’m going to fill it with a mixture of shredded potatoes, carrots and onions, add in some frozen mixed vegetables, season it with liquid smoke, salt, pepper, onion flakes, garlic powder, rosemary, sage, thyme, and paprika, mix in a bunch of cheese, then roll it all up cinnamon roll style and bake it. Hopefully it turns out! If it does I think my vegetarian kids are going to love it! I looked around in your site but didn’t see your ever so famous cinnamon rolls recipe there. I sure hope you add it someday! That would be amazing!

Becky you need to get some goats onto that blackberry! there are people who 'hire out' their goats with a little fencing yard so they're enclosed in the problem area and they're marvels at cleaning up the weeds! :)
