Agreed. I feel like a lot of colleges have this kind of implicit bias, and it pops up in so many subtle (and not so subtle) ways. Unfortunately, most white students are oblivious unless it’s something as shocking as this. But it’s all damaging and it all needs to be called out.

At my community college there was a girl who had a native american roommate. This girls tribe had a huge thing about not doing anything to alter their hair, like they wouldnt cut it or dye it or anything. For whatever reason these girls did not get along and this girl decided to put clorox bleach in the girls shampoo. She really thought that this would dye the girls hair but in reality it gave her severe chemical burns all over her scalp and could have blinded her. Thankfully the girl was kicked out of the school but the poor girl who was harassed left as well because she no longer felt safe on our campus.

That's why I think uk unis are the best (I'm not sure where else does this, but it just makes so much sense). You get your own locked room and a shared kitchen that has a locked cabinet. You share the fridges and freezers, but my uni also had a mini fridge in each bedroom where I kept all my food. Cheaper accoms had shared bathrooms, but you could get en suites too. Honestly it was amazing being able to just be by myself and not have to worry about wtf people could do to my stuff.

My bestfriend, her friends roommates were crazy. They flipped the blades on her razor around so when she went to shave her leg, she sliced her leg up. They would put her shower caddy on high shelves with open cleaning products in it (like bleach) so when she would go reach for it, it would spill all over her. When she would shower, the roomates had random guys walking in and out of the bathroom. It was crazy. All because they wanted her to leave so another one of their friends could move in.

This happened to my daughter when she started university doing her nursing degree in the halls of residence. She (the other girl who, would you believe was training to be a mental health nurse!) would put salt in her drinks and empty out the rubbish bin all over the communal areas, I won't even go into her bathroom behaviours, the girl was just awful. My daughter already had OCD and the worst thing would be someone touching her things. Again the university did nothing and attempted to tell my daughter that she needed to be more caring which was utter crap and said that her flatmate had issues, yeah no shit, and although they took the other girls issues into account they did not take my daughter's mental health into account. Thank you for sharing this story, it will most definitely help my daughter understand that she is not alone in this kind of victimisation. I am stunned by this type of behaviour. Luckily she has still qualified as a nurse and lives with her sister who thankfully would not act out any of this behaviour!

My boyfriends mom did this to me when me and my boyfriend went to visit her. I always found hair in my food and when she served me a Greek yogurt popsicles it had hair all over it and tasted disgusting. I feel like she's hated me since day 1 because when she would come to visit my food would always have hair in it and tasted different than the food she would serve my boyfriend. I would NEVER EVER and I have NEVER EVER tampered with another beings items or food, it is disgusting and evil I dont care how much I dislike someone I would never do it. I lost 20 lbs on the 4 weeks I went to visit my boyfriends parents because I would not eat his mothers food. I knew she did it because when I actually made food, she would pick at it and check it and wouldn't even eat my food...it is totally like a perpetrator to think their victim would do the same thing they have done.

This happened to my sister too. And her roommate took it to a dangerous level by contaminating her stuff with items she was allergic to! My sister was having reactions and had no idea why. It was insane. My sister got her own room after that bc they kicked the girl out of the school. Looking back I wish she did something legally too and went to the police but bc the school too quick action once she figured out what was happening and once she took it to school security etc. But that girl should’ve been criminally charged.

I just found this video! My freshman roommate did not physically harm me, but she did some pretty crappy things. She would have guys over at night without my knowledge, while I was sleeping in the room. Then when I would go to class she would have her naked partners sleep in my bed. I caught several naked men in my bed. She also gave her keys to some guy who came in my room while I was sleeping multiple times. I don’t even know what all he did in my room while I was sleeping. She would leave her dirty panty liners in my closet! I eventually changed schools, and became an RA so that I could stop this kind of things for others.
