@@julesviolin Hi , i (steve) have been restoring cars for over 30 years and back in there was only similar products like hammarite widely available then, its a tried and tested method , i used it to restore a Mazda RX3 about 8 years ago that we sold and still no signs of rust, also i still own cars i have treated that way and have seen customers cars many years later and still they are good, so proof is in the pudding :) there are other products and techniques available but thats one that works for us : hope that helps :)

Back in the 1980s, lots of cars in the USA were "restored" like this. Bondo over a layer of rusty metal - they even made "rusty metal bondo" that was supposed to have rust inhibitor in it! Back around 2006, I removed the bondo on a car where the metal behind the bondo was nothing more than a layer of iron oxide. They literally bashed the quarter panels in with a hammer and then slathered up to 1" thick layer of bondo on the whole thing. I ended up hand-fabricating both rear quarters. The best way to remove that stuff, I have found, is to take a wire wheel that is already worn down to where they wires are very stiff and short, and just go at it.

Thanks for the advice. It does seem like they have just layers tons of filler on the rusty areas. Rust inhibitor in the filler sounds interesting!! Haha thanks for the comment

They have a long file that looks like a cheese grater, great for scarring out bulk filler. I try to make as little dust as possible. I've done lead work on old 40's-60's cars but only by customer request.

@@johnc.hammersticks What you are describing as something that looks like a cheese grater is actually a woodworking tool called a rasp. I have used one when fixing small areas of rust on a car that was not worth taking to a body shop to be done right.

Gotta love structural body filler 😉 Reminded me of a Capri someone bought in for an MOT, the entire rear chassis rails were just fibreglass and under seal. It’s good to see you going back to bare metal and chop the grot out. Keep going 😃

A few years back Nissan had nothing with excitement in their showrooms. To try to invigorate things the set up a program for buying decent 240Zs and restoring them to as new, and even offered a full new car warranty. The program was short lived because they could not find enough candidates that met their criteria. The vast majority needed too much body work for Nissan to be bothered touching them. A sorry indictment of the original build quality.

Dear @@yorkshirecarrestoration guys You're welcome, it's my pleasure. Thanks for replying and especially for giving a heart for my comment. I totally appreciate both very much. Although I maybe wouldn't do so, I'm glad to read that you will continue to restore this wonderful looking car. I once had two 280 ZX, one even with the t- bar roof. Unfortunately I didn't have luck with both cars and lost money because the sellers had been shameless and not honest at all. One car had a hidden accident, the other a hidden engine head problem. Nevertheless: The Graf Goertz design made it one of the best looking cars ever (at least in my opinion respectively for my personal kind of taste). And I love the 2800ccm 150 hp inline 6 cylinder engine. Unfortunately rust was the cars biggest enemy (as you already know). Sincerely yours.

I remember these Datsuns when they were new. You have to remember that they were covered in rust at 4 years old. The fact that any UK sold cars are still on the road is a miracle. You had two choices ,use them in winter and watch them dissolve or only use them on dry days. Even Alfa and Fiat were embarrassed by the speed Datsuns disintegrated.

Like a "car builder" who customized cars here over 20 years ago. He was featured in several newspapers. But those who then bought the cars from him have had to redo everything. Instead of directing, shrinking and stretching the metal, it was putty all over it. Built up all the nice transitions with putty instead of making them of sheet metal.

ONbelievable but I have bad news for you my dear friend. This black gum (not sure about how you call it in England) that you have applied on arch, should not be applied on bare metal. Epoxy primer must be applied as the first layer and only then you can apply the gum. Etch primer.... maybe, but it must be covered with acrylic primer then. You see, if you miss some small corrosion cavity, be sure that it will spread under that layer of gum and you won't be even able to see it. Also this gummie stuff has a bad connection without primer that may create air cavities wich will be filled with water soon. So for your insurance, consider applying epoxy primer on bare metal first (not acrylic primer as there were too much foci of corrosion). Your scheme will work in a hot and dry climate. But speaking about England... absolutely NOT Anyway you are doing a great job, keep going

Both in that video and this one we see people doing a proper job. Another thing I have noticed is that you use Hammerite paint. Certainly isn't good when it looks half decent when looking at the paint, but then when you dig in it actually has a whole factory worth of bondo on! Although in this case it makes for a more challenging restoration. Bring it on :)

We knew it was bad, but you never quite realise what the filler was hiding. In this case, it was hiding an un-restored car with lots of rust. the corners and angles were not made from steel, they were made from filler. That affect the structure of the car so we were surprised at that. Easy stuff this.

I've often wondered...at what point does the rust/rot get so bad that the car can't be called original anymore? What with all the panels needed to be replaced and patched. At some point the car ceases to be what it was, and in essence becomes a "kit car". Edit: this car should have been chemically dipped, with the degree of rot.
