Great job Ryan. This is a good example of manufacturer saving pennies with a slightly cheaper component and causing havoc down the line. Imagine how many extra modules have been manufactured as replacement parts, and how many mis-diagnosis and wiper motors have been fitted. They don’t make them like they used to

Sounds like the relay contacts aren’t beefy enough to handle the wiper motor current! I’d also change the relay myself and have a good spare as it sounds like this could be a recurring problem.

In 2019 Mazda in USA recalled Mazda 3 models from 2016 to 2018 for exactly the same fault. Probably the same BCM in the CX5. If you have another one fail maybe get the customer to highlight this to the dealership

Well done,great video and well explained.👍.Wiper motors take a fair bit of current-looks like these relays could be underrated.

Some vehicles with identical faults, I've grafted on an external uprated relay (or like in this case, a pair of relays) What you have to remember is that when "parking" the wiper, power to the motor isn't just switched off, because inertia may cause it to run on past the park position and do another sweep. To stop it dead, the motor is shorted out by the NC contact of the speed 1 relay. Eventually that contact welds up and the relay armature cannot then physically move when energised.

I’ve repaired failed contacts by turning them into micro switches which switch an external standard relay wired to the output. Needs milliamperes to work and easy to replace as just 4 wires. Did it on an old XM when ignition main switch got fried from burnt contacts.

Haven't seen a relay fail on these. I re-solder relay legs and everything works fine.

I used to work on old telephone exchange equipment (electro mechanical switches etc) which would burn relay contacts . We fitted metal oxide varistor (MOV) across the contacts to stop the contacts burning from the back emf when the contacts opened. The contacts are going to burn however chunky they are. It's poor design that causes it. A simple component across the contacts costing pence would stop that.

Have you ever done a ford transit where the temp gauge works for about 4 or 5 seconds then stops working ,if you turn the ignition on and off you can get the temp to work

Hi Ryan, thanks for sharing. I have a similar issue on wife's kia. Low & high works fine but not auto/ intermittent, stops halfway on the screen.

God be with the days you could simply unplug the bad relay and plug in a new one... surface mount of a mechanical device like this is ridiculous...

Yes your point accepted, however this unit is Bosch branded. So what does that tell you about its manufacturing quality control? Bosch are German company not Chinese, Their once good reputation for reliability has taken a dive. In this case the BCM was manufactured in India and not China.
@G-ra-ha-m2 күн бұрын
It's not a problem of components, it's l;ack of specs and testing from Mazda. Lots more current in a chinese EV than a wiper motor.
