Is this an American thing? In the UK when I was at school the way you suggested was exactly how we were taught to do it. There was an evacuation point (usually a car park or the playground) and we were told to evacuate calmly and then line up with our form room (home room) class in alphabetical order. Then our form room teacher would check attendance to make sure no one was still in the building. It’s wild to me to think anyone would expect people to organise BEFORE leaving the potentially burning down building

History has shown that time and time again hundreds have died in fires because to many have tried to get through a choke point at the same time causing deadly crushes for those stuck and blocks the exit for those still inside.
