That makes sense. The adhesive layer seemed like a block. So for gap filling the epoxy was probably against the sticky side, not the paper. Oh damn.. I think I’ve got another test to do.

Enjoyed the test and comparison. Having the resin release from molds is such a critical thing when making things with silicone. I belong to a group where we share information about epoxy projects and uses. One of the topics we discuss occasionally is mold release vs. no mold release and methods for ensuring epoxy doesn't stick to whatever we are using as a mold. This video is on point for that discussion. I do want to ask - this video is 3 years old has anything occurred in your epoxy work that you would question your original conclusions or have something more to elaborate on?

Question... when you are using the tape for epoxy, it's usually the sticky part that is against the epoxy. It looks like, in your vid, that it's the outside of the tape that you are using for the experiment, instead of the sticky part.
@YouCanMakeThisToo
@YouCanMakeThisToo 6 ай бұрын
Just depends on the application. If you're lining a form.. it'll be the not sticky part. If you're slapping it on the underside of a board over a knothole, it'll be sticky.

Excellent review sir. I have an 8 foot 3D printed submarine model that is absorbing way to much water when submerged (even with a coat of fiberglass resin to stop water entry). Based on this video, I am going to use the 3D hull as a mold, and add 3 or 4 coats of fiberglass over it, before breaking out the 3D plastic. Due to the special lines on the sub, I will probably use the Glad Cling Wrap and Gorilla tape as my de bonding set up. Thanks for a great video.

Have you tried and experimented with transfer tape. I did a experiment with packing tape and it left the epoxy sticky on the bottom. I just recently did another experiment with transfer tape and because the transfer tape is similar to the adhesive on packing tape once the epoxy became in contact with the transfer tape and the epoxy cured it left marks on the bottom of the piece I did and the transfer tape started to crumble a little bit because the epoxy got hot.

Informative video. Thanks. Curious about if just waxing a cheap pine 2x4 from box store works for non stick. Have you done a video on what tape works best for sealing bottom of slabs from leaks and around like cookies with big cracks in them. I can't seem to get the tape to keep the epoxy from leaking out. subscribed.

This video is great. my application is a little different. I want to seal a through-hole with epoxy or potting compound without having to sand the epoxy down. So I was thinking about applying tape on one side and filling with epoxy from the other side? Do you think the adhesive side of these tapes would stick to the epoxy?
@YouCanMakeThisToo
@YouCanMakeThisToo 4 жыл бұрын
Your best bet for that will be get a scrap of wood and coat it with tape. Then place tape down against the show side of your and hot glue the heck out of that block to your piece to seal it off and hold it tight. Then pour in from the other side. The adhesive on tape tends to act as a barrier so epoxy seldom really sticks to it.. but it tends to droop and the epoxy seems to work it’s way through the adhesive and leak.

Great video, thanks! What you said about the Thickset was a little confusing. Were you saying that Thickset is more viscous than 2:1 or less viscous? I would think the one with "Thick" in the name would be thicker

Thickset is less viscous. The "thick" is because it can be used in a thicker (deeper) pour, not because the fluid is thicker.

I wouldn’t say gorilla was the best, but it was the most surprising. I think what helped the gorilla release was the texture.. harder for a vapor lock. But that’ll also leave a texture. For me the take away was almost anything works if you wax it enough

Have you thought of something to do with the bits of resin left over? They look like bits of stained glass to me.

From this test? No, I already scrapped them. But when I have extra I have little silicone cups I pour them in to use them as stand offs.

How can I make epoxy stick to a chrome motorcycle gas cap? I want to put my dog tags on my gas cap and encase/encapsulate it in epoxy.

Hello there I am wanting to make top covers for my bedside tables. Basically like a oversized placemat. I have made some frames the size I want out of pine I was thinking about cauking a silicone base to it to create my base and cauking it afterwards on the inside too to create a nice seam all around. But then before all that should I be covering the pine in something first ? Clingwrap parchment paper ? Before I go ahead and fix the basee silicone to the frame ? Hopefully I have explained this enough for you to possibly be able to advice. In a nutshell. I have created a pine frame out if sawn pine woof and screwed together. I was thinking maybe I should cover frame in clingwrap or parchment paper then using some caulking to stick my base to the frame and seal om the inside too. I have ordered a thick silicone mate the type we use to bake on so about 4mm size I require. So I was thinking should I be covering rhe pine in Clingwrap or parchment then affixing the base ak my silicone mat with caulking then sealing it inside to create nice seams . I just want to be able to demould with ease. This is my first major job and it's for my bedside tables so I would like nice clean results I just couldn't afford ti pay put £100 or more a custom mould for my job. Hopefully you understand what I am trying to do and maybe able to help . Thank you

I am pouring into a big crack in a parota table, the crack goes to the end of the table, should I tape the ends with packing tape?
@YouCanMakeThisToo
@YouCanMakeThisToo Жыл бұрын
Something.. for sure. In my experience tape doesn't onto the ends very well. I either screw a board (covered in tape) onto the end to make a wall and caulk it... or if the gap is small enough, fill the end of the crack with silicone caulk and then cut the end off once it's done.

So after this test, does this change how you make you epoxy projects? What would you use? Just melamine coated in wax?
@YouCanMakeThisToo
@YouCanMakeThisToo 4 жыл бұрын
I think so! Or hardboard coated with wax. The melamine releases a little better, but it tends to chip out at the edges.. so it's really important to covert hat bit.

Caleb, what spray and wax did you use on the gorilla tape? And does the tape have to be black? Can you just use the gorilla tape and wax? Would that work in your mold?

I’ve been using blue tape as a dam but with the sticky side up. It’s been working, but I want to do a pour of about 1”, which I haven’t tried yet. Have you tried a dam using the sticky side up? Also, have you tried metal tape?
@YouCanMakeThisToo
@YouCanMakeThisToo 2 жыл бұрын
I've done sticky side on when I'm just patching knot holes and stuff. The problem is the epoxy sometimes wicks between the adhesive and will start leaking.. but that's only when tape is all I use. Metal tape will work as well.

I was about to do the same sort of testing, but to see which tape has the least meniscus effect at the edges. It is a lot of work sanding/filing off sharp edges due to the meniscus of epoxy against the dam, so if there is some tape where epoxy would "bead" and not stick at all, that would be ideal. Looks like Gorilla duct tape may be the one?
@YouCanMakeThisToo
@YouCanMakeThisToo 2 жыл бұрын
Your best bet to eliminate that is instead of tape, use marker board (smooth melamine coating) and put paste wax on it.
