THIS VIDEO IS A RECONSTRUCTION OF THE FOLLOWING SITUATION IN FLIGHT:
01-FEB-2025. An American Airlines Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner (B788), registration N819AN, performing flight AAL93 / AA93 from Zurich International Airport (Switzerland) to Philadelphia International Airport, PA (USA) after departure from Zurich reported a problem and requested to stop climb. The airplane leveled off at 7000 feet. Later the flight crew declared PAN-PAN, reported slat drive issue and requested return to the airport of departure. They positioned for the approach and made a safe landing on runway 16 at Zurich International Airport.

THE VALUE OF THIS VIDEO:
THE MAIN VALUE IS EDUCATION. This reconstruction will be useful for actual or future air traffic controllers and pilots, people who plan to connect life with aviation, who like aviation. With help of this video reconstruction you’ll learn how to use radiotelephony rules, Aviation English language and general English language (for people whose native language is not English) in situation in flight, which was shown. THE MAIN REASON I DO THIS IS TO HELP PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND EVERY EMERGENCY SITUATION, EVERY WORD AND EVERY MOVE OF AIRCRAFT.
SOURCES OF MATERIAL, LICENSES AND PERMISSIONS:
Source of communications - www.liveatc.net/ (I have a permission (Letter) for commercial use of radio communications from LiveATC.net).
Map, aerial pictures (License (ODbL) ©OpenStreetMap -www.openstreet...) Permission for commercial use, royalty-free use.
Radar screen (In new versions of videos) - Made by author.
Text version of communication - Made by Author.
Video editing - Made by author.
HOW I DO VIDEOS:
1) I monitor media, airspace, looking for any non-standard, emergency and interesting situation.
2) I find communications of ATC unit for the period of time I need.
3) I take only phrases between air traffic controller and selected flight.
4) I find a flight path of selected aircraft.
5) I make an animation (early couple of videos don’t have animation) of flight path and aircraft, where the aircraft goes on his route.
6) When I edit video I put phrases of communications to specific points in video (in tandem with animation).
7) Together with my comments (voice and text) I edit and make a reconstruction of emergency, non-standard and interesting situation in flight.

I see that US ATC is catching alot of heat in these comments🤣 As a Pilot from Switzerland my personal opinion is not that the US Controllers are not professional or incapable or incompetent. ATC in general across the world is one of the most stringent fields of work when it comes to discipline, competence and professionalism. It’s just a cultural thing. Since everybody speaks english as their native language it’s to be expected that the phraseology, at some point, will turn colloquial. I mean within the US this doesn’t seem to be a problem and everything just works fine. It’s just like in France where they speak in french on frequency or spanish in spanish speaking countries. The problem arises when pilots with let‘s say below average english knowledge or pilots that are not used to colloquial phraseology enter the airspace.

Instead of asking if they wanted to continue or come back, just said “you are leaving my airspace, if you want to stay, turn”. Sounds like ATC not only gives the pilots time to work out the issue but 1) sends them to 7000 to avoid both the mountains and the need to busily aviate 2) navigates for them concisely and precisely, knowing that they can use autopilot over 7000 and 3) communicates for them with the other ATC, setting up the fire brigade. This is the reason the pilots can solve the problem in peace and decide successfully what they can and cannot do. And, ATC doesn't ask impossible things from the pilots. Probably ran/remembers the numbers himself too, with a margin of error. Asks if he is allowed to drink water tomorrow. A fuel dump can permanently damage water sources, and probably the plane flew above a major one.

Nothing to worry about, pan-pan is an urgency not an emergency. Slats are the extension to make the wing surface larger for take off and they probably werent able to retract them after take off, therefore not being able to fly as fast and climb as high. So they had to return after figuring out if the issue could be fixed. They didnt want to dump fuel so the landing was quite heavy which puts stress on the brakes, espeicially using a tailwind rwy. That is why they asked for a fire truck, just in case brakes would overheat. What did they communicate to the passengers?

@TobyFerrari
@TobyFerrari 2 күн бұрын
I might know why. When you land on 16 you have more runway to use. (You may look at google maps) if you land on 34 you have more obsticals such as buildings, a street that is higher than the land around it and is unsafer than on 16. if you look at the map you notice, that 34 has an area of runway marked with only arrows. That part is normally not used, and a landing there is not possible due to the things mentioned earlier. However landing on 16, the part with arrows can be used as more breaking/stopping time. Does that make sense?
@cilvaring

@TobyFerrari Yeeeeah, sooo this is embarrassing... I mean, I actually know what a displaced threshold is and how it's used. If I had looked it up before commenting, I would have seen it there as clear as a bonfire at night in the flat desert. What makes it even worse: From my office I can see the beginning of 34, hence the displaced threshold 🤣🤣 So, I could have spared us some time, if I had just used the giant round thing sitting on my neck. Back in the late 1980’s, I was on a flight leaving London and just before flying over Ireland, a man a few rows behind me suddenly died! The pilot had to turn around and go back to London with a full load of fuel and every seat was taken. We were told to get ready to immediately exit the plane by the front door and leave everything behind because they were afraid of the brakes catching fire with all that fuel. Many people had removed their shoes and one poor lady was hopping on one foot because the other one was broken. I took my purse even though we were told to leave everything. That jet emptied in record time with stewards screaming to run and we spent 8 hrs. waiting for another plane.

@christophersmith5303
@christophersmith5303 4 күн бұрын
They are full weight for trans-atlantic flight with fuel so the plane is heavier and will come in for landing at higher speed - it's easier to use the longest runway and entire roll to stop the aircraft. It's also an isolated end of a runway that does not impact operations for the airport and gives the emergency services a nice isolated spot to greet the plane. The tower is likely passing on the wishes of the fire incident commander for same thought process.
@ipsec6279
@ipsec6279 3 күн бұрын
Yes exactly right. ATC had to assume that the plane would block the runway for a while and directed it to a dead spot. At end of Rwy 16 it doesn’t get in the way of other runway operations. I flew 35 years out of Zurich and ATC was always top. 👍

It’s just taken off to fly across the Atlantic. Fuel exhaustion is not going to be a problem. ATC can get passenger numbers by phoning AA’s handling agent at ZRH.

@@renard67 it’s not about fuel exhaustion. It’s about how much fuel is on the aircraft incase something goes wrong on landing. Also, they aren’t going to “phone” AA. The pilot’s have this info handy. They know exactly how many people are onboard and it takes 5 seconds to give this info.

Probably a displaced threshold on 34, which would give 16 more landing room. P.S. I just looked it up - 34 has a 1541 foot displacement; 16 has none.
