It seems like back then car mfrs and consumers didn’t care much about safety besides Mercedes and Volvo. After my mom got into a car accident in her Camry she insisted we get a Volvo and Mercedes.

It held up damn well considering the speed. And it wasn't a standard S class - it was bullet proof, and these cars are damn heavy, around 7000 to 8000 pounds or 3-4 tons. Additional energy that has to be absorbed. Anyway, Diana would be alive today if she was wearing her seat belt.

Most 90s cars would have been completely toast after an accident like that, the passengers too. The W140 was maybe the safest vehicle available back then.
