Crash Test MUSCLE CAR - Mustang, Camaro and Challenger

Because no one buys a muscle car to drive in the slow lane, the best all-­ around occupant crash protection is crucial.
IIHS evaluated 2016 models of the Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Challenger and Ford Mustang in the full battery of crashworthiness evaluations.
IIHS doesn’t typically crash ­test sports cars as they make up a small share of the consumer market. IIHS engineers decided to evaluate these models with optional V-­8 engines because they are big sellers in their class, and consumers often ask how they would perform in crash tests.
Insurance data point to high losses for sports cars. As a group, they have the highest losses among passenger vehicles for crash damage repairs under collision coverage, data from the Highway Loss Data Institute show. Collision coverage insures against physical damage to the at-­fault policyholder’s vehicle in a crash.
The Camaro, Challenger and Mustang all earn good ratings for occupant protection in a moderate overlap front crash and side impact. In the Institute’s newest and toughest crashworthiness evaluation, the small overlap front test, the Camaro earns a good rating, the Mustang earns acceptable, and the Challenger is rated marginal.

Dodge is safe man those are the sport models my aunt had 2 accident with dodge nitro but the car did not even required fix first is a motorcycle crash the motorcycle came so fast like in 50 km/h and nothing happened to dodge a d motorcycle is sucked second is a car crash a car crashed with nitro with probably 20 km/h nothing happened to my aunts dodge! That is cool and she used that car to 155.000 km she had good vibes with it and it never need a fix from those crashes dodge is probably better than the other amirican car companies for speed and safety

I'm a bit biased to the Camaro, as I've been T-boned in one by an E-250. He was going about 45 through a red light and I was going the same through my green light. The side airbags deployed and I didn't even have a minor concussion after the accident. Thank you Chevy for not cutting corners in terms of safety, I'd probably not be here if you hadn't.

+TheAndrey any time you see the a pillar collapse or buckle it's not something your looking for. Look at the Camaro when the impact reaches the a pillar the impact stops there

You don't want the A-pillar to buckle, like on the Mustang. Also, the Mustang's door buckled, unlike the Camaro, which means the collision intruded into the occupant space. You can also see this intrusion on the inside view of the Mustang, as the whole dash moves towards the test dummy upon collision. I do have to say I'd rather be in the Mustang and not the Challenger. It's footwell area actually crushed and trapped the foot of the test dummy. The Camaro is the one you really want to have though, as it did a good job (the best of these three cars) keeping the crash forces outside of the cabin space.

+jreyman I agree there was more motion on the Mustang... but we also have to remember that the Mustang's dash is a big pad and not a hard piece of formed plastic like the Camaro's. That GT also has knee airbags. Not sure if the Camaro is similarly equipped.

The Camaro does have leg airbags, and when I was in a 2015 Mustang the other day, I decided to push on the dash. It creaked, rattled, and several things actually caved in, like the glove box. Not so in my 2013 Camaro, and not so in the 2016 Camaro. Having driven all three, from best quality to worst quality, the list is 2016 Camaro, 2013 Camaro, and 2015 Mustang.

About 1 year ago, a lady ran a red light and hit my 2015 ecoboost mustang on the driver door and was doing around 55 mph. The impact was so hard she.pushed the car over 100 feet and wielded the door to the frame. Firefighters had to cut the door off. Needless to say, the car was totaled. I, however, suffered just a bruised collar bone from when the seat belt locked to prevent my head from slamming into the dash. I can personally vouch and say the 2015+ models of mustang are EXTREMELY safe.

The Camaro has always been a safe vehicle. Back in 2007 I was in a head on accident at 50 mph with a Blazer in my 1996 Z28..blazer was destroyed and the owner was hurt bad, my Camaro fared better and both my brother and I were totally unhurt

As far as visual damage done in the tests, all the cars are totaled. And if you ask me being alive to receive the replacement car is better than being dead and having someone else note, "he's dead, however his Camaro is in slightly better shape than had he been in a Mustang"....

I mean it just depends on the crash and no vehicle is safe in a crash. Some vehicles are just less dangerous than others to crash. For example a 1940 Chevy is less safe to crash than a 1970 Chevy, but both of them are still dangerous to crash. Same goes for any vehicle. Ability to avoid the crash is something they overlook. Because nothing is going to survive a head on with a Peterbilt unless they avoid it.

You said it right! Dodge (looks) like a real muscle car, but it has all that plastic inside and when it crashed it not only crumbled up like it was an aluminum foil, but it also shattered a lot of plastic pieces. Real muscle cars don't have as much of plastic and don't bend like that.

in the challengers defense the current car was designed before small overlap crash testing took place by the iihs. the vast majority of cars that were designed before the iihs started doing small overlap crash testing did poorly. this was just a result of the current challengers age.

The look of the vehicle doesn't matter in the case of a crash, it's the vehicles frame and body frame structure that decide if the occupants survive. The challenger received a low score as the "driver" had received a major injury in testing. If it had been a real crash and the vehicle caught fire, the driver would have died as he would not have been able to escape the vehicle.

Actually, the wheel "flying away" would be better, same with the fact that the driver's side fender tore away, less to snag and hold onto the object you're impacting then in theory, less G force because the car would be able to keep moving faster than if it snagged the object and hooked onto. Also, if you watch it back, the Camaro has the last cabin intrusion, the door as well as A-pillar both buckle on the Mustang and Challenger, you also see the dash moves extremely far forward in the Mustang showing how much cabin intrusion there really is and well, you saw what happened in the Challenger...

Having been in a head on collision going 60 in a Camaro, I can tell you this is accurate The engine of the SUV that hit us was in its front seat. The Camaro was demolished but the cabin was in tact and all three people inside, myself included, walked away with a few bumps and bruises and that was it. The driver of the other vehicle was life flighted to the ER.
