Ability of your brain being able to repeat any phrase starting from anywhere cycle of 4th, 1/2 a step, whole step up or down naturally instinctively without thinking, in the spur of the moment, is the name of the game of this improvised music, which makes you like it and wanting to be part of it. As you are working through the phrase, you will run into some “clinkers” and will work on your technique that way. You may not do it in every which way at the same session, but make sure you go through it at a later time. As you keep doing this you will get better at it including starting on the right note the first time. And yes figuring out where it lands harmonically does not hurt (which I am bad at it being a lonesome line instrument ;-( ) but really being able to sound like you react naturally instinctively to what you are hearing and coming up with a good/positive (line) reaction, will be the fruit of this ear training practice.

Really digging this 30 Day Challenge. My ear always needs work so these little daily nuggets to sing, then transcribe this by ear and then using my ear to move it to all the keys by ear is good. Plus the technique work moving it to other keys. Good way to start my day.

For me, the unintentional benefit of working in all 12 keys is enforced repetition of a bit of jazz language I am trying to internalize. I might not sit down and play a phrase twelve times in one day if I were just practicing it in one key. But having to play it in each key "forces" me to practice it repetitively -- the pattern is the same and by the time I am finished, that phrase is etched in my memory.
