I always used my outdoor shower to wash my hair using natural biodegradable shampoo and soap.I use a pop shower tent and bottle water to wash up. Those shower tents are so worth it if your boon docking. Keep your bottled water for washing in the back of the truck and it will stay warm in summer. Cost for me 70 cents a day. For bottled water. You can refill the empty bottles and reuse if need.

If people are curious as to what their items draw, you can purchase a "kill-a-watt" tester that allows you to see the actual amp/watt draw of your items (up to 15 amps). This shows you exactly what each item is using, allowing you to better plan your consumption and how long you can estimate your power will last.

Great info on the electrical and water side of things. We are spoiled having a desalinator and unlimited gray water discharge being on a boat. But I can relate with the electrical balancing act, even with 600 watts of Solar and 675 Amp Hrs of battery. SV No More Mondays.

Another tip to greatly reduce generator run time, if you like to boondock a lot is adding solar. Solar has gotten a lot cheaper than it was just a few years ago making adding a worthwhile amount of solar practical. I added 620 watts of solar to the side of my motorhome about a year and a half ago. Now I only have to run my generator for air conditioning and microwave. It paid for itself in just a few months and we now have free limited electrical power for life. Next year we will be adding a big solar system (3,240 watts of solar + 14.5 kwh of batteries) that will allow us to run a mini-split heat-pump, microwave, etc. without generator use at all, giving us unlimited electric power. Of course it will take 4-5 years of FT use to payback a system of this size ($8k.) But it's not just about the money saved, it is also about the convenience and freedom of having off grid power anywhere we go in our home on wheels, without the noise and smell. There are times when you'd like to have AC but can't run your generator because of rules or common courtesy to your neighbors. For coffee while boondocking we use a little percolator like this one so we don't need to run our genny to make coffee. www.lifeandhome.com/products/texsport-13215-stainless-steel-percolator?LaH_Bing&Ad%20group%20%231 We have used it for many years and it works great. Since water is a limiting factor when boondocking, we carry an extra 15 gallons in our toad in 3 - 5 gallon water bladders which gives us a total of 105 gallons. This is usually sufficient for a typical 14 day stay (the BLM limit). If we find ourselves running a little low we can go get water without having to move our motorhome. If our gray tank gets full, we filter our gray water and let some of the clean, food particle free water trickle on the ground, where it is safe and legal to do so (such as dispersed camping in the desert or forest). We then backflush our gray filter at the dump station, flushing the captured particulates when dumping the bulk of our waste, to extend filter life. In areas where this is impossible, we have a blue waste tote to cart off and dump our excess gray water at a sanitary dump station, if needed.

Helpful hints you've shared. Generators work great at construction sites. Inverters work well for RVers, Campers., boondockers, moochdockers. Unplugging appliances is a good point too & going to the breaker box to lighten the power load. I have to impliment that next time. Do you strain the dishwater to be certain that no food particles go into that gray tank? Not so important going in the black tank. I hear you on that: 'you don't have to buy anything at Harvest Hosts'. However I had a conversation with a HH operation that grows a fruit/veg product. He got hyper, very hyper, when in no uncertain terms he said: 'I hate it when people come in here and don't reciprocate by buying something.' He went on & on & on. So I know what you said, but most of them are unhappy with you if you don't give back. I'm willing to give back, but it's less than businesslike when an establishment makes one feel uncomfortable by using a heavyhanded style of conversations at the outset. That place shall remain nameless. I enjoyed your video coverage on BOONDOCKING from way back on 4/13/19... How did I miss that one?! Your presentation style where both of you take equal parts in your videos is nice. It's informative, enthusiastic, modulated, with warm reflection between you two. A suggestion for the coffee, try the pour over method instead an electric pot. I bought a carafe style pour over, which holds about 2 large travel cups worth of coffee. If I have extra I pour into a thermos to keep hot. What about warming your food up on the stove instead of the microwave. The way we did it before microwaves. Thanks for another great video!

Thanks for your videos. I do something similar like "Harvest Host" in Europe. In Germany it's called "Landvergnügen" , in France "France Passion". AND: I love eating the good foods, too. These farms - most have got only 2 - 5 places for motorhomes - offer cheeses, wines, breads, different kinds of meat...., sometimes they run a small restaurant. The majority do organic farming, which makes tasting a must. On the other hand, the luxury of dump stations, electric hookups etc. cannot be found there. But you find pure nature. We were at Gulf Gator Ranch the early part of April on our way headed to South Dakota, we loved it! What a great attraction and Tim the airboat capt was amazing. Loved the airboat ride and entire attraction. We are big fans of Harvest Hosts. Another great video, we boondock in our toy hauler, we do not have a residential refrig.

Omgosh! You just took me back about 25 years! Moss Point, MS! I don’t have fond memories of that little town due to a terrible smell from the paper mill that was there back in the 90’s! My hubby is/was a Plank Owner of Naval Station Pascagoula and we lived in that area for 3 years. He loved the duty station-I hated the weather! Nothing worse than having two small sons confined to the house for days on end due to rain and high humidity! Thank God for the indoor Play Places! When it wasn’t raining there was definitely a lot to explore. Thanks for sharing!

We have found that not all harvest hosts are free. Of course, at the wineries, we buy wine, but nobody makes us. We just went to Anchorage Botanical Garden, and were told that we both had to pay the entry fee to use our Harvest Host "free" night stay. Maybe we would have gone to the garden anyway, but there went a chunk of our budget that we didn't plan on. One thing to buy something at a winery or farm because you choose to, and another to be told that you have to pay whether you want to go in or not.

Maybe even places you have driven by over and over and always say you are going to check out. Just dont put off really 'living' until next year. Its a terrible trap!

Pulling all plugs or appliances so it does not drain your battery reminds of when we were stationed in Italy. We lived on the economy and trained the kids to pull the plugs after using the tv. Otherwise, an expensive electric bill. Great tips for the RV. 👍

Right! It is smart no matter where you are. It does save electricity.

To save power you should turn off your inverter. Don't mess with the coffee pot and microwave. I have a 2000 Watt inverter and it draws 2 Amps while in standby with no AC loads running. If you leave yours on all the time that's a lot of power. I only turn my inverter on when I need the Microwave and don't have shore power. There are more sophisticated systems to monitor your battery. A system with a Shunt that measures Amp Hours into and out of your Battery. It can display a running total or a percent of charge remaining. Much more accurate than the difference between 12.5 and 12.6 Volts. I enjoy your videos, they have a high production value and are well done!

We watch TV while boondocking and wouldnt think of missing a single GOT episode!! Not a chance. I would recommend boondocking a bit to learn exactly what you needs will be before buying solar/lithium. That way you dont over/under purchase. But it definitely is not needed for boondocking.

also if you want a trick to make coffee while you are driving open up you coffee machine and bypass or disconnect the digital part set it up for coffee and plug into the inverter and use the remote to turn on the inverter and it will make the coffee when ever u turn on the inverter and if u put a timer on it it will go off in 10 or 15 min how ever u want

I was impressed y'all tried the boondocking a little more. A great way of saving water is what my dad called military showers... That's where you get wet, turn the water off, soap up and rinse off at 5 minutes max. Since my grandma always told him you shouldn't wash your hair but every 3 days we got an extra 5 minutes then😊 Oy😎 Flushing you're so be water into your black tank is a great idea: it helps keep your lines Dawn clean 👍👍 there are all kinds of amazing things you can see when you are boondocking and it's well worth the inconvenience!

Beauty of a class A is easy generator. We have 5 th wheel. We have generator but we have to pull it out 😆 . So rest stop lunches are little different. We upgraded to a cpl Battle born lithium batts and a bigger (2000 watt) inverter /charger in our class C and it was kinda spendy but well worth it. 610 watts solar goes on the roof next month if the weather clears and warms about up here in the PNW. We have stress on power while unhooked anymore. And Battle Born extended me a military discount on the batteries which is always appreciated 👍! You guys have a huge fresh water tank... I'm I little jealous but Army guys are used to no showers sooo 😉 After all those years, I've trained my body not to stink... Ha. Go Army!. Ps- charge all things via 12v sockets or hard wired USB off the batteries and not thru the inverter. Save at least 2x the power.... See ya on the road!

We are just starting to look and gather information for our big move in 2 years, (sounds so far away). Anyway I have been watching a lot of tubes on all things RVing, I really love your videos. At first I thought I wouldn’t want to boondock but the more I see the more I think I really want to. We are thinking about a 36Ft. 5th wheel, I don’t want to go so big that we have trouble getting into places. How hard is boondocking? Is it tons of work? I just think I would rather be more secluded then in a park with a thousand people on top of me. I really want to see the National Parks and nature. Thank you for sharing your adventures with all of us, it is so helpful and encouraging for those of us trying to navigate this move. I would like to try and make the least amount of mistakes possible. I know we will make a lot but that is how you learn what works and what doesn’t but in my opinion fewer is better LOL.

Its not hard at all. You just have to do it a few times to learn how to conserve your resources.

Some great tips Phil! Yall need some lithiums if you want to boondock more. The are pricey up front, but cheaper over time. I'd be more than happy to help with a solar system one day whenever yall are ready! Or we can just grab some beers lol -Thomas

Enjoy your videos immensely - hope you don't mind a question concerning boondocking. What are the "rules" around marking "your spot" as still being used if you only have your home rig available for investigating the surrounding area. Just wondering since we don't have a tow vehicle to drive to trail heads that are in the area of where we want to boondock for several days. Any and all insight is welcomed and appreciated by this newbie couple. Safe travels!

Good question.....we have seen folks leave a char or two behind while scouting out spots. Just be prepared for them to "walk." I would leave something that you won't mind replacing if it comes up missing. Small orange cones would be a safe bet if I were to leave something behind.

I am thinking your engine alternator should be charging your house batteries. Based on your charging habits with the generator it seems the engine is not charging the house. It is common to have a selonoid go bad which may be worth checking. Great vids,

you should just get a rv dealer perfb one that made your rv, to remove the toilet and replace black water tank with another fresh water, Composting toilets are awesome

Hi guys we have been boondocking since last Tuesday. You know the AGS System on Ruby is a must use when BD. Also using paper products is a great way to conserve water, navy showers. Let's not forget lithium and solar. Changing out the chassis batteries and adding 2 more lithium iron phosphate batteries to the house. Would like to talk about parasitic draw on the chassis batteries some time if you get a chance. We are in Clarksdale MS until Monday.

Thanks Michael. Agree with the AGS. We do paper and Navy showers. We are working on a solar package now with hopes to have something to work with in the very near future. Haven't thought about changing out the chassis batteries as well....something else to ponder. Vet interested in talking about the draw. We travel tomorrow as well. Maybe tonight??

I think you have us confused with another channel. We love Harvest Host and use it often. We think it is worth the cost if it fits your Rv travel style.
