Don't throw out your dishwater! Use it to flush the potty!! In our sticks and bricks house we had to wait 9 months for a new well to be dug! We learned ALL about water saving during that time! When you have to take a huge 250 gallon tank somewhere and back fill your home regularly you learn FAST about doing it and with 3 kids!!

the water you saved in the shower can be saved for a so called spit bath. Warm the water on the stove and in the shower use the water to get wet and then soap up and use the water to rinse.

Dish washing: I start with just enough water to start, maybe 1 in or so to wash silver ware, then as I rinse I am adding water to wash dishes, as this goes on I have enough water to wash pots & pans. This cuts water down by about 50%

I like the tip about 2 bins in the sink. I use cold shower water for the dog's water dish. My tip (in addition to foaming hand soap) is to dilute shampoo a bit. You still get the lather, your hair is just as clean, but it takes a LOT less water to rinse out the shampoo. Also use "leave-in" conditioner, then no water wasted to rinse that out! Can also dilute dish detergent.

My fav tip, that's similar to this one, I put Shampoo on my dry hair right before I jump in, that way your already shampooing as soon as you get wet initially. I use the collapsible bucket for catching my cold water, that way I smash it back down and store in shower!
@karengann96155 жыл бұрын
We have been catching the cold water at the beginning of our showers for years in our sticks and bricks. We have to pay for our water and it really saves money. We use it either in the washer or to flush toilets. Also have a dehumidifier in the the basement and use that water in the washer.

I don’t pay for water but have some friends who hooked it up so the washing machine rinse water drained into a washtub and then back into the washer for the next load to wash, good way to conserve water at home anyway !

Awesome video as always! Glad to see you on the road again. For us, we use a dual shower head. One is a full flow, the other a low flow. We switch heads for hook up versus a Navy shower. In addition I have a switchable set of T-fitting’s in the backend of my external shower which switches me from the primary feed to my grey water or a set of 7 gallon Walmart tanks. Most of the stuff I’m spraying down outside can leverage the grey. And if fresh is needed, it’s there. And if off grid I can leverage the portable cans which are easy to transport for a refill. In addition I have a 5 gallon under the kitchen faucet as an accum tank so I don’t have the pump running as often.

I really liked this video. The way you took us around with you and giving us tips as you went along. It is amazing the people that you meet as you go on your travels is amazing, what a wonderful woman that overcame tremendous odds against her. My favorite water conservation tip was the cooking ahead of time. I liked catching the water while it is cold water in the pot. Mayra and I would use it for our water distiller and make drinking water since we would heat up food in the microwave oven and use disposable plates and utensils for eating so there will be minimal dishes to wash. Still my favorite retired military RVer couple.

I don't do buc-ee's because they don't allow semis thus they don't have the high flow diesel pumps that most truck stops/pumps have. Our son-in-law is talking about a transfer to San Antonio (works for Gov. Contractor) but we won't be changing our domicile state to Texas. RV over 26K weight and Texas requires a special driver's license. FYI Absentee ballets are always counted. Newmar has a shower design that circulates the water back into water tanks till it heats.
@todayissomeday5 жыл бұрын
The Buc-ees pumps are just as fast as the truck stop ones we have used and they have two to three times the lanes to use. We wish there were more Buc-ees off the interstates, The drivers license isn't too bad.....written test and driving, just time consuming. Interesting concept with Newmar, had not heard of that.
@roydavis22425 жыл бұрын
The EPA regulates the speed used at pumps. The ones at the auto island are regulated at a slower rate then truck island but not all truck island have the high volume pumps. I have a 200 gal tank which can tie up a pump for 20 min. if empty.

We use the dish water to fill the toilet for the morning #2 fill and flush. We also have a 5 gallon Igloo for our drinking water. It rides in the shower on travel days. We wash dishes starting with very little wash water and the rinsing adds to it as we rinse into the dishwater.

This is probably one of my favorite episodes. You kept me engaged. Good Job! As a tin-can sailor in the early '70, fresh water was a luxury. We would sail often for the closes rain storm to go on deck to have a rain shower. Life lessons has help us to maximize our boon docking experience. For comment, I would add that we replace our traditional water heater in our RV with a on-demand gas water heater and set the temperature to a comfortable shower temp.. Very, very little wasted water doing the Navy Shower.

We are actually watching this video for a second time! It was good the first time but I learned some from the second time as well. A tip we have learned in the interim is using a spray bottle with water and a little bit of liquid soap in it. You spray your dishes etc rather than putting them into a water bath to get soapy. That way, you are just using water for the rinse process!!! At the time when we watched this we are I think 24 days from the election and your story about the 81 year old lady that was a JAG is inspirational. Thank for sharing.

I also prepared food ahead of time before boondocking so that all I had to do was heat it up on the stove. A spritzer bottle with plain water just to rinse hands after eating or any other lite duty occasion where water would work. too long of a list, just use your imagination. A second spritzer with water and some vinegar for dish rinsing/washing.. again for lite duty cleaning. Not for cleaning the 'rib' tray! ;) great for cleaning anyting that shines or glass too. the vinegar acts as a sanitizer and grease cutter and odour remover. You could do the same with lemon juice. It would smell nicer but probably cost more. I would toss my full dish pan into the plants or grass during hot summer months to help the greenery also needing water. So many places enduring drought these years! The trees and grass need the water too! Hope this helps.

Good informative video. We use all the above but rather than heating the shower water on the stove (uses our propane) we have an electrical kettle and it boils the water in about 60 -m 90 seconds rather than 4 min of propane, and it has been cold enough at night for the last few weeks that we have been using the furnace every night.. Keep enjoying the adventure. We hope to be out of Red Bay on Wednesday and then off to a couple of state parks in Tennessee.
@todayissomeday5 жыл бұрын
It is a balance to decide which on to use electric or propane. It takes us forever to use up the propane so we usually go that route but you are right if we need the heat nightly it does play in our decision.

it is a little off topic , but i hate my rv to be dirty , and i noticed someone else washing their rv with a bucket , but they squeegeed , the excess water off without rinsing , i modified it a bit and added car wash & wax additive , to give it that extra bit of shine , and happily noticed that the squeegee removed a lot more dirt and left it shinier and mostly streak free , and only used 2.5 gallons of water ,

Most of these tips I've known for years, given that I grew up tent camping. There is no 'waiting for hot water:' there is none at the spigot down the road. You carry back a 3 or 4 gallon bucket of cold water, (very heavy and awkward when you're 12 years old), heat as needed for cooking, dishwashing, or sponge-bathing in the tent. The main bucket is your supply of drinking, cooking, and toothbrushing water. That said, I have what I think would be a great idea for water conservation in an RV, but it would require an engineering solution, and I'm not qualifed. But here it is: figure out a way to route gray water to use for flushing the toilet, so your potable water isn't being used that way. Another double-duty water-saving use before the wastewater hits the dump station!

I don’t think there is such a thing as a right time to go through Houston
@SSKnerrTN5 жыл бұрын
So true! We lived in Clearlake (south of Houston) for four years. The traffic is always lousy! We'd leave on vacation at 4A to find the clearest roads possible. Some great things in Houston but traffic is the worst.

Squee! Buckees is THE BEST! It's absolutely impossible not to go inside when you stop lol. Would resistance bands/system give you a similar workout, but without the added weight of gravity-based weight system? 🤔 random thoughts Thanks for showing one of the ACOE parks you guys speak so highly of. I was so curious after all your descriptions! I love how Phil talks smack about Stacy's glamping showers and brags about his Navy shower capabilities, but runs dish water like it ain't no thang. 😂🤣 You guys are great. That pot in the shower trick is SMART!

I'm sure you've heard of COMBAT SHOWERS? As a aircrew member you don't always have the time to get to a laundrymat. So we had to jump into the shower with your clothes on . As you wash your flight suit , you take it off after a wash and rinse and then the tee shirt and skivvies, I guess that's what they call underwear in the NAVY. Socks and then you shower.

There's something wrong this you guys, you let Escapees put you in green folder, don't they know that navy goes in a blue folder, really! The other is you didn't give the best water saving tip of all, shower with a friend. Ya know it was all the rage back in the 70s or 80s (I'm getting old and can't remember too good anymore)>
