I followed in her wake for 2 years, 1978-1979 on USS Worden (CG-18) when based in Yokosuka. I was a boot recruit. Even earned my shellback card on the Worden. Many of days we were plane guard for Midway and even had to do a recovery of plane parts if I remember right after a plane crash. Also did a refugee rescue. As we were pulling into Subic Bay, we got called out. Hell of an experience for an 18-19 year old to do all I did for 2 years in Midway's wake. Would not have given it up for anything....:)

One of the times we plane-guarded Midway was when she got turned around after the Ranger hit the tanker off Singapore in 79. Did an Unrep one time with Ranger to port of the IIRC the Kansas City and we were to starboard of her. Unrep Station seamanship - kind of thing that separates the sailors from the guys along for the ride. My usual Unrep Station was JOOD with the Conn. That got pretty hairy too.

I served on the Midway in 1980. My Marine squadron, VMFP-3, always had a detachment aboard serving as the eyes of the fleet. We flew RF-4B's which were photo recon aircraft. I was a Com/Nav technician. My enlistment ended in 1981, so I launched my civilian career in the high technology world, not involving aviation. Things some how go in circles and I found myself working for a company based in San Diego who manufacture unmanned aircraft. I've been back in avionics since 2009. Thanks for your channel, and for sharing your adventures in full time RV'ing! 🙂
