MUST SEE: Liberty Station San Diego: We had the best time in San Diego. There is so much to see! Liberty Square is a cool place to hang out with restaurants, shops, art and so much more. Liberty Square is the site of the old San Diego Recruit Training Command and Navy Training Command. Walking around brought back a lot of memories and sea stories!

Recruit barracks are on the other side of the channel by the Neversail. Some of the building are gone now. That are is mostly city Police and Fire training, also some border patrol and city water department. I taught many Fire Academies there and it was common to see visitors wandering around trying to find their old barracks.

Awesome video! - I'm on the other side as a observer. I was born and raised in Ridgecrest China Lake with a job as a drafter working on Sidewinder and Phoenix missile systems in 1982. Moved to San Diego in 85. I wander around Liberty Station and try to imagine what is must have been like "back in the day" . It is such a crazy nexus for so many people. My current company here in San Diego, Solar Turbines, was the third largest employer of aircraft parts for WWII - we had many of the original Rosie the Riveters - that were showcased in the Women's Museum at Liberty Station. Full Circle!

Love this series of hearing old Sea Stories! I’m a PAC Fleet Sailor also - but my old ship is now becoming a reef off the coast of Hawaii as it was used in target practice. Met my wife at Navy Supply Corps School Athens GA, which also has been decommissioned. Would love to swap stories over a camp fire someday.

That was SO COOL! All the memories of my late-ex's exploits at NTC! The USS Neversail. The Geedunk! The grinder! "Nuts to butts! Make that sailor in front of you smile!" lol Sam was there for boot camp, at Balboa for Hoslital Corps A school & Pharmacy C school, back to NTC for Instructors B school, then back again to teach chemistry at Pharmacy school. 3.5 years in San Diego that shaped our lives!

Great video. Brought up some memories. I remember that club, there was something like 5 different clubs in that building. Went through San Diego in 89 and A school. It was funny when Stacey brought up the cooks barracks since that was where I did A school at. I also remember walking over the bridge every morning to get to get to the chow hall when in boot camp. Interesting how things have changed.

Hey CDR! I attended RTC in 1977, Company 188. Was scared out of my wits... Missing the folks was the hardest part. 1st time away from home, some CPO and a 1st class yelling at you all of the time. It was quite unnerving until you got used to it. Then it was keep your head down, do what your told, and DO NOT bring any attention to yourself! If I had it to do over again, I wouldn't change a thing!! Best 5 years of my life ( I'm a SEABEE!)(then 30 years in the Reserves) Great deployments to North Atlantic, GUAM, and Rota Spain. Was Air Force back in the early 80’s…my husband and I walked down memory lane at San Antonio on Lackland and it was amazing…his and my old barracks were still standing after all these years… 3 of 4 kids followed our footsteps. Was stationed at Misawa AB first assignment 81-84. Love your videos!

I was chipping the starboard yard arm at the top of the mast aboard the USS SELLERS DDG-11 as an OSSN, (while in dry dock in 1978) when the base police came onboard and arrested two shipmates for murdering an airman serving at the Air Force base in Charleston, SC. The airman had borrowed a boom box and had refused to give it back. My shipmates killed him to get it. Talk about being shook and being unable to sleep for a couple of days wondering what kind of guys I was living with onboard that ship…

A long time ago Phil. I thought the Navy boot camp was against the MCRD and the airport. I was at Marine boot camp September 1976 and later returned to the depot for duty in 1978 and thought the Navy boot was still adjacent. Looking on google maps now looks like MCRD took that space over and most of the buildings are gone. I am also going way back in memory. Anyway, keep the videos coming as I enjoy them very much. Hope to see you guys out on the road sometime.

I spent the entire year of 1965 at MCRD going through electronics school. As you know how well the Marines got along with the Navy and had some very interesting time on Broadway in San Diego. I actually spent more time on Navy ships than some of my friends that spent a tour in the Navy and never left shore. I spent a few months on an LPD during a Caribbean cruise in '66 and later that year I traveled to Vietnam aboard the USS Simon B Buckner, a converted luxury liner that was brought out of mothballs to haul troops to Nam. I must say I never had a bad meal on a navy ship but then I can truthfully say that I have not had a bad meal in any military mess hall and I have eaten in many of them all over the world. Thanks to the Marine Corps and the Air Force ( 64/70 USMC 72/95 USAF), I have been to over 45 countries. I would not trade my time in the military for any other profession in the civilian world. During my time in the service, I have worked with all branches of the military. I have nothing but praise for all the branches I have worked with. I hope we have the opportunity to meet up on the road sometime.

On the MCRD side we called those planes from the airport the "freedom birds". If you recall they were very loud since we were right off the runways. During drill practice our drill instructor liked to call a movement right when a plane was taking off just so we would mess up and he could find a unique way to punish us. Good times!

When we went over to advanced side our barracks were right next to the Iranians!! Used to have smoke breaks with them. Really enjoyed this episode. I was in company 245 and went through RTC/NTC in Dec of 1985 so I was just ahead of you. I was 17 and the youngest in my company. Somebody gave me the wise advice before I went to boot camp to keep my mouth shut and stay in the middle of the group. Was good advice for sure. It was like landing on another planet arriving in San Diego from a small mayberry town in LA. Just like you, it was the best thing I could have done at that time of my life. I was a cook in the Navy and did my A-school there as well. I remember that club very well. They had beer vending machines on base(at the bowling alley) when I was there. They were trying to keep us underage squids from going down and getting in trouble in Tijuana where the drinking age was 16 or something like that. I ended up being a plank owner on the USS Bunker Hill which was stationed at Coronado Island. Makes you feel old seeing a Starbucks where you use to march huh?!? lol

We just left there a couple of weeks ago. Went to liberty station and Point Loma Light house. I grew up there but we moved to Norfolk in 2000 and retired in San Antonio. Almost the same track as y’all.

My Hubby said lucky you to be sent to San Diego. He was sent to the Great Lakes for basics in the winter. Said even your bones froze up there, but he he lucked out for Italy for his home port. Loved seeing San Diego by your video, going to get there some day post pandemic. Thank you.
