Hey CDR! I attended RTC in 1977, Company 188. Was scared out of my wits... Missing the folks was the hardest part. 1st time away from home, some CPO and a 1st class yelling at you all of the time. It was quite unnerving until you got used to it. Then it was keep your head down, do what your told, and DO NOT bring any attention to yourself! If I had it to do over again, I wouldn't change a thing!! Best 5 years of my life ( I'm a SEABEE!)(then 30 years in the Reserves) Great deployments to North Atlantic, GUAM, and Rota Spain. (on active duty)

That was SO COOL! All the memories of my late-ex's exploits at NTC! The USS Neversail. The Geedunk! The grinder! "Nuts to butts! Make that sailor in front of you smile!" lol Sam was there for boot camp, at Balboa for Hoslital Corps A school & Pharmacy C school, back to NTC for Instructors B school, then back again to teach chemistry at Pharmacy school. 3.5 years in San Diego that shaped our lives!

I went to NTC for Digital Electronics before moving on to Submarine School in ‘89. A BM1 taught some of my shipmates and I to do fancy work on the railings. I want back in ‘20 before flying to the Persian Gulf and saw much of our original fancy-work still on the railings. Also have several memories of the Clubs that involve much staggering. Plenty of great memories on NTC…Tom Cruise eat your heart out!

Great video. Brought up some memories. I remember that club, there was something like 5 different clubs in that building. Went through San Diego in 89 and A school. It was funny when Stacey brought up the cooks barracks since that was where I did A school at. I also remember walking over the bridge every morning to get to get to the chow hall when in boot camp. Interesting how things have changed.

Recruit barracks are on the other side of the channel by the Neversail. Some of the building are gone now. That are is mostly city Police and Fire training, also some border patrol and city water department. I taught many Fire Academies there and it was common to see visitors wandering around trying to find their old barracks.

On the MCRD side we called those planes from the airport the "freedom birds". If you recall they were very loud since we were right off the runways. During drill practice our drill instructor liked to call a movement right when a plane was taking off just so we would mess up and he could find a unique way to punish us. Good times!

I went to boot camp there also. Sept 1974, heading there on rv trip next year and hope to see my barracks. Over on worm island backing up to Mc boot camp. When we went over to advanced side our barracks were right next to the Iranians!! Used to have smoke breaks with them. There was a little guard shack between the two by the bridge we would stand duty in. I would look out at Coronado and all the yachts and wonder where I made a wrong turn in life to get to that spot! Great video! Looking forward to our visit!

Your military career was similar to mine (at least started out the same for sure - maybe more similar than we think). Boot camp, a-school and off to the USS MIDWAY. We were probably onboard together…. Then, enlisted and ultimately transition to “the dark side.” The rest is history but what a way to start a family, a career and life. Congrats. And as your background music says, “the best is yet to come.” Love your videos.

Moved to San Diego in 85. I wander around Liberty Station and try to imagine what is must have been like "back in the day" . It is such a crazy nexus for so many people. My current company here in San Diego, Solar Turbines, was the third largest employer of aircraft parts for WWII - we had many of the original Rosie the Riveters - that were showcased in the Women's Museum at Liberty Station. A long time ago Phil. I thought the Navy boot camp was against the MCRD and the airport. I was at Marine boot camp September 1976 and later returned to the depot for duty in 1978 and thought the Navy boot was still adjacent. Looking on google maps now looks like MCRD took that space over and most of the buildings are gone. I am also going way back in memory. Anyway, keep the videos coming as I enjoy them very much. Really enjoyed this episode. I was in company 245 and went through RTC/NTC in Dec of 1985 so I was just ahead of you. I was 17 and the youngest in my company. Somebody gave me the wise advice before I went to boot camp to keep my mouth shut and stay in the middle of the group. Was good advice for sure. It was like landing on another planet arriving in San Diego from a small mayberry town in LA. Just like you, it was the best thing I could have done at that time of my life. I was a cook in the Navy and did my A-school there as well. I remember that club very well. They had beer vending machines on base(at the bowling alley) when I was there. They were trying to keep us underage squids from going down and getting in trouble in Tijuana where the drinking age was 16 or something like that. I ended up being a plank owner on the USS Bunker Hill which was stationed at Coronado Island. Makes you feel old seeing a Starbucks where you use to march huh?!? lol
