I have loved this film since I was eight years old and I remember developing an instant crush on Doris Day and Gig Young. However,my enjoyment is marred now when I think of how he ended up and how his actions must have destroyed numerous lives. The film was well cast and it’s a gem.

The dialogue between Ethel Barrimore and Frank Sinatra is fantastic. So witty and well-acted. Ethel was a superb actress

I'm surprised that others haven't commented that this is a remake. Funny thing is I didn't even realize it until Frank Sinatra's character came on the scene. The original movie was titled "Four Daughters", released in 1938. The cocky composer was played by John Garfield....Priscilla Lane played Doris Day's part....I'm not finished watching this version yet...This one has been very upbeat so far...the 1938 movie was very sad overall. But a very good picture, that I would recommend.

Bert H Hey Bert. Hmmm. Not sure what my favorite scene is. I have to think about that. I literally have not seen it since I was a kid. You are way ahead of me. But I always remembered it. I called it - in my head - the swinging gate movie...because of the fence and the gate in front of the house. I searched for Sinatra movies yesterday and located the real name! The watched the whole thing yesterday on KZbin. It's the feeling of the entire movie as a whole. I mean, I love the actors and singers. Sexy Frank! Lovely Doris. Creamiest voices in the world. But the tenor of the movie. The sadness in Frank's character is palpable. And, the devotion of Doris' character...something that is hard to find now. I read that the older version of the movie ends in his death. This version ends in his coming to his senses. Looking back with today's eyes, one gets the sense he was deeply depressed, and it is unlikely that he would have come through this so quickly as well as Barney did. But, I have learned that a study about those suicide attempters who jumped off the San Francisco Bridge actually lived through the experience for the most part, and by far, did not go on to attempt suicide again, so maybe it is realistic :) It was a very serious topic for the day dotted with good music throughout. Interesting and challenging juxtapositions, eh? Very daring. Way better than transformers. Now this is more than you wanted!

Maria Bacigalupo Hey Maria, Me too. Absolutely. love the old Actors and Singers since I'm a kid. Nowadays, there aren't movie actors such as in the past. The movies nowadays are often about sex and violence and that’s the difference. I’m afraid but this is tendency, besides exceptions. It’s a shame, and it makes me sick because the morals and decency are going to lose. For me personally, I have had a bad time last year and the movie “young at heart” gave me strength to look forward. That’s what happens in one of the movie scene. Sinatra feels bad and lonely and in the end everything will be all right. I know, It’s still a movie, but sometimes in real live it’s nearly the same thing. By the way I’ve got several old movies of senatra, Doris Day, James Stuart and many others. Do you know the movie" it’s a wonderful live” (1946) with James Stuart, he also has been a brilliant actor. You have been written that you located the real name of Sinatra, I didn’t know that. Sorry about my English, I’m a bit rusty. We have the same passion about old movies, it’s quite good, and that’s a good style (It’s one of the scenes in young at heart). Have a nice weekend

As the daughter of a troubled, hard drinking musician who had career highs and lows, this movie is painful to watch now. When I saw it at age 6, back in 1954, my family seemed almost over qualified for happiness. Within four years, times became very difficult. I would say, given the Sinatra character's ever present self loathing and depression, the happy ending seems fake. However, my parents did get a happy ending eventually, so maybe sometimes fairytales can come true.

The only thing I did not care for much was the writers had Sinatra way too much in self pity and I think it ruined parts of the movie...a little less heavy on the doom & gloom with Frank and it'd be fine. I think Sinatra was the best pop singer ever and I chose Doris as best woman singer/actress since a teen, never wavering. Man, Doris Day is a doll! She is still in CA. What a joy it must have been to know her...all I ever heard/knew was good about her. She's the best...& in the 60's especially with the James Garner/Rock Hudson films, every man in America fell for Doris.
