I've been volunteering on a therapy forum as a "listener" for about 2 years now. What I find when someone says "I don't have the self-motivation to achieve my goals" is that they already do have that motivation, but what they don't have is organisation: They don't usually realise they need to be organised. The easiest thing for me to tell someone is to write a thorough to-do list with key specifics and to do the research. It works 100% of the time. People will always escape the trap of staying indoors for a week at a time watching Netflix if they have a to-do list and a really thorough routine.
@denolaj4 жыл бұрын
FMSpeedart sorry for responding to this a year after you post this, but in my experience this isn’t always so. What does help with that if when, besides the to-do list they (I, mainly) have someone to hold me accountable to my list. (and even then, apathy is a killer, and I still mess it up)

Initially overlooked this despite finding great value in Chris' other videos - I'm near 50 so how relevant could it be to my situation...? Hugely so, it turns out! Came back to it after seeing some of the excerpts, and the advice here is absolutely wonderful. I'm repositioning my freelance business to do strategy following the CORE process and have exactly the same issues as these guys: no track record, no portfolio, struggling to find the time and motivation to do the work I need to do, working for free for family and friends to get case studies together. The advice in this video alone is worth the price I recently paid for Ben's offer on the futur academy for a portfolio review. Hats off to the young guns for putting themselves out there, looking forward to the young gals having their turn...and maybe next we'll see some old dogs learning new tricks from Chris and the crew. Keep up the great work, you are having a huge impact on people's lives. Thank you.

I always though time was unlimited until I used tu need more, everything is about organization; when I started to organize my tasks and time everything set.

RE: Shariff's question regarding focus and motivation: When you are an employee, and many many employees are engaged in unfulfilling work, there is a period of rest like the exhale before you can refocus on more work, even if it is work to progress your self development. It is necessary. From my understanding Chris has been a business owner for the vast majority of his working life so the employee experience hasn't been his for the most part. His experience is that of people fortunate to be self-directed in their profession almost from the very beginning. On that basis it is understandable why he doesn't have the same requirement to decompress from a daily conformity to the schedule and requirements of others that is demanded by being an employee.

I can relate to Sharif(spelling? Sorry) so much. Aarons advice was legit. I look at my own work and judge it so hard that it's taking the motivation out of me. I've also had some nightmare clients that have made me wonder if this is the line of work I really want.

To the people who misunderstood, I have lived alone for 6 years, and I can easily move out to any city I want. The whole story is that I'm living in the same city as my parents right now. That's the difficulty. I moved out when I was effin 17. I can sure as hell do it again at 23. The time I'll save on commute will go to doing chores like cleaning, cooking etc. If I am living in the same city might as well live with my parents to get better care even if it's costing me few more hours everyday.

Hi guys! You touch on a really important thing about half an hour in when you start talking about comparison and competition in the creative/design world. I've been there when I see something someone else has done that I really like and get a little envious of their talent or feel discouraged with my rate of growth. But THIS is the truth: EVERYONE--every skilled, amazing artist started out drawing stick figures and having NO clue about what they were doing. Everyone starts at the beginning. With some people it clicks earlier or faster with education and practice and their rate of growth is faster than perhaps someone else. But that does NOT mean that they are better than anyone. Coming from my personal perspective as a Christian, I believe that everyone has a purpose and their uniqueness is incredibly invaluable, that our differences as humans (creatives) all come together as a beautiful whole--like a puzzle. So many people think that they need to be like someone else, or start going down the dark path of trying to impress their creative peers and be "THE BEST" instead of just being the best version of themselves. I dare to say that the most successful people have just learned to be the best version of themselves. This is so easy to say, but scary to do. It's actually learning to be less self-focused and try to create things that help others or make the world a better place. It's also recognizing the root of these thoughts are FEAR. Something I have to work hard at everyday because my natural tendency is to compare myself to others and worry that I'm not good at what I do. Learning to create for purely doing one's best and helping other people and just having fun creating brings so much peace and actually helps me do a better job. Also, looking at someone else who is really "good" can be a positive --looking at them as inspiration instead of a threat--like, "hey, they got that good, so if I keep doing my best, I'll be that skilled one day in what I do." Like you said, "Love your success!" I know I'm writing a book, but I want to say one more thing about time management. Chris, I hate to say it and I mean nothing harsh (I respect your work ethic and professionalism a lot) but in my humble opinion, you seem like a workaholic, LOL! It's something to respect, REALLY! But don't forget to take time to play. As the old saying goes, "All work and no play makes Jack (Chris) a dull boy." LOL! Sometimes taking that time to relax in a positive way (a positive movie or spending time outdoors or playing with your family, etc) relaxes the brain and sparks creativity. There's no guilt in taking time to just be a "kid" sometimes. Thanks for your videos! Remember that there is so much more value in family and friends than the things you can't take with you when you die!

"Tough Love". Really glad I found this channel, got me motivated and some Chris Do brainwashing started to crawl in my mind :-P But I totally understood what Arun feel. Maybe its the upbringing that parents give to their child and also the culture that they believe in, especially most countries in Asia believes that leaving your family at the age of 18 or 19 is a rebellious act and a disrespectful thing to do, this is a very old belief and tradition but still strongly held. Like what others say, you just have to talk to your parents sincerely about the dreams you are trying to fulfill, not only for yourself but also for them. Leaving them does not mean you don't love them or disrespect them. You just need to go and get that future waiting for you.

Unfortunately I have to sacrifice this vision because I am a brain tumor survivor. Also in our family my mother is the only person whom I live with is my mother. So I seek advice from everyone and they tell me stick to your house and start freelancing there is a bunch of knowledge remain free on the internet, KZbin of course you sir your entire channel is like a library of knowledge. And I decided to pursue my career in brand identity design and logo designer right now I am updating my portfolio in behance then I will use of social media in freelancing platform to start earning money and provide my design service. Exactly I see it as expertise is a staircase , meaning one above the other can give each other advice and help people below their level of knowledge, and it’s a never ending staircase. So the whole you don’t know enough is bullshit we all don’t know enough, and when you work with your client you don’t need to be “the master” you just need to know just enough more than them to help them that’s where your value comes from. Also loved that you touched on documentation, that’s so important to see your journey from years past is truly something amazing to see you can see your growth in real time and people who are just starting seeing your progression also see a light to start their own journey. A channel like the futur cannot ultimately show the struggles of beginning a business because they already did it so theirs an opportunity for us who are just starting out great episode.

On the motivation point, I don't really agree with Chris on that one. The best possible hack really for something like that is to make yourself accountable to someone else. Find another person that is trying to self-motivate to do something as well, doesn't even have to be design could be anything. Meet once a week, set goals for each other and then hold each other accountable the following week, think of it more as show and tell rather than an exam. The trick is to not have any punishment. Treat it like therapy more than a competition. If you miss your goal, that's ok, but you have to explain why honestly and then take one step back from your previous goal. Break down the task into a smaller actionable step. This is how you build momentum and set yourself up for small wins that gradually become big wins. You could spend months agonizing over not working on your portfolio but 30minutes a week, will soon become an hour, then two hours then three etc. That's your short-term win, your long-term win is the weekly meeting. It's the same kind of compulsion loop that MMORPGs run on. Beat an enemy to gain a little XP (small win) to level up and beat bigger enemies (big win). Alternately you could take on a client and hold yourself to their schedule and timelines. I guarantee this will be more painful but ultimately beneficial. You're going to have to deal with difficult clients at some point so you might as well start early. Not undermining the importance of conviction but the key in the early days, if you don't have that conviction, is accountability. I'm 13 years into my design career and I still have a weekly meeting.
