I saw Young Frankenstein in the theater in 1975. I had just finished my 4 year hitch in the Navy and moved back home. My young bride and I saw it, laughed so hard that we went back the next night. You have to keep in mind that this long before the internet. We had to drive 40 miles into East Lansing to see it. The theater catered to the students of Michigan State University and was so popular that it ran for 6 months. We saw that movie 14 times before it left the theater. It is one of the few films I have on DVD.

One great thing about Young Frankenstein, is that-unlike so many other horror parodies where the films are just a series of cheap gags and not much else-in Young Frankenstein, Mel Brooks lavishes a ton of detail on the gothic sets, the special effects, the makeup and costumes. Mel Brooks gave the film incredible period detail to make much of the film resemble the 1930s (Woody Allen would later do the same thing with Purple Rose Of Cairo). The film isn't just a parody to the Universal horror films. It goes much deeper than it. Young Frankenstein is also a homage to the old Universal horror films.

I always thought that in the brain fluid transfer, the Monster got some of the Doctor's intellectual, but the Doc didn't get the Monster's physical attributes, but rather his technique, drive, and stamina. That stuff could plausibly transfer better than a bigger schwanstucker could.

The real Baron Frankenstein was an early 19th century, English scientist named Andrew Crosse. 1. Andrew Crosse was actually rich/titled 2.Crosse really did do bizarre experiments with electricity. 3. Crosse was pursued by scared villagers on his estate. 4. Crosse created a race of insects in his lab doing experiments involving currents of electricity into some test tubes of bubbling chemicals. Crosse could not have inspired the novel Frankenstein being (no pun intended) that he did his weird science experiments many years after the novel was published. But yes Andrew Crosse was no doubt the real life Baron Frankenstein.

Blazing Saddles ended the cowboy movie genre with its satire and ridicule of cowboy movie tropes.
@snorpenbass4196
@snorpenbass4196 9 ай бұрын
Also the ruthless skewering of the inherent racism in the genre and the rose-colored glasses white America wore when watching westerns. Blazing Saddles was never ever on the side of the racists, always making the joke be on them, which is why even today it's got a minimal amount of problematic elements (the Yiddish Sioux _kind of_ works because of the Mormons and the whole "Lost tribe of Israel" nonsense).

Wes, You should sit down with your boys, and watch the original three Universal Frankenstein movies with Boris Karloff as the monster just to see how amazing a recreation of them Young Frankenstein really is. The Universal pictures have a wonderful charm and humanity to them. They are the fairy tales of my childhood, as I would watch them every time they came on our local late-night creature feature. Karloff is amazing as the monster, you see him more as an abandoned child than a soulless killing machine. Gene Wilder did an amazing job with the screenplay, both parodying and paying homage to the original Universal films. I think when you get a little more background on Young Frankenstein, you'll appreciate it a whole lot more.

2 asterisks 1) Get Smart - the TV show. 2) My Favorite Year - Not Mels but a fictional recounting of his time writing for Your Show of Shows. Peter O'Toole just devours the scenery. His famous quote "I'm not an actor, I'm a Movie Star!" Doing a Parody of Errol Flynn. Small movie, big chuckles, not guffaws, but entertaining. Bonnie and Clyde was directed by Arthur Penn, not Peckinpah.

Most disliked movies? Tree of Life The purpose of the evolution of the universe (which we spend most of the first act watching) is that adult Sean Pen has mental health issues because of his shitty childhood where his father was Brad Pitt. Continually interrupted by Family Guy style cutaways to waves crashing on the shore, and at the end everyone goes for a silent walk on the beach. And the other: First Knight Expectations: Excalibur, but with Sean Connery. Reality. Not that. Not even close…

I love some parts of this film. I find most of his films to have lots of highs and lows. The ones I watch all the way through are Blazing Saddles, Life Stinks, and sometimes To Be or Not to Be (but the original with Jack Benny was better) and sometimes Young Frankenstein - but sometimes I just skip to my next favorite bit. Same with The Producers - both versions. Men in Tights and Space Balls are sometimes actually tedious. More times than not. I'm not sure I every finished High Anxiety, but I only love about 1/4 of the Hitchcock films it's spoofing. But I still love Mel Brooks. It's like if he had had a skit show on tv and I considered some of the skits unbeatable classics, but always skipped the reruns of some of the others. My favorite WIlder performance is in Blazing Saddles and I think that is why it tops my Brooks list. Leachman is my favorite part of Young Frankenstein.

I loved The Producers, Young Frankenstein & High Anxiety. The casting is perfect, the writing is witty & the cinematography works to set up the sight gags & humor. They are brilliant satires & hilariously funny. Spaceballs made it difficult for me to rewatch the OG Star Wars without laughing at the helmets. The only strong memory I have of that movie is the ridiculously large helmet that Rick Moranis(?) wore. George Hamilton did a Dracula spoof & that ruined the original B&W Dracula film for me. Children of the night--shut up! Richard Benjamin kept trying tto kill him unsuccessfully with silver bullets & used a Star Of David instead of a cross...I'm laughing just thinking about it.
