I love that Godzilla doesn't really see the people of Tokyo -- like we would be with ants. It is attacking boats and trains and knocking down buildings but it doesn't even look at the reporters on top of the building it knocks down. Like the bomb - people are incidental to Godzilla

Yeah, this was the first Godzilla movie where I was invested in the human's outcome. The writers/director did such an amazing job making the audience care about the secondary and even tertiary characters (something most American films lack). And a big part of it was making Godzilla an absolute menace, he gave zero f*cks.

The mark on Noriko's neck is a symbol standing for all the people at the end of WWII who survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. While over 100,000 people died immediately in Hiroshima, many surivivors were irradiated and died of cancer years, even decades later. Noriko's scar is a grim reminder that it might not be over.

Shin is about the bureaucracy in the wake of Fukushima. Its great! My top at Gojira, Minus One, Shin, Tokyo SOS and Final Wars. Seeing the patrons list it looks like most havent seen any of the Japanese Gojira prior to the 2000's (besides the original). Some are silly, but there are a lot of great gems.

What's that board behind Ty? "Part II"? Part II of The Expanse!?!?! Every time I see something like this, I get all excited, hah. Adding an element of body horror to Godzilla 0 would make a lot of sense. The terror that followed Fat Man and Little Boy with all the lingering effects of the radiation was brutal. Makes sense they would allegorize that.

The follow up Godzilla movies with Godzilla as a protector were Japanese though. American reboots have varied in the evil monster and the protector. While I think the comment about Americans seeing this nuclear disaster as a protector is interesting - since the Japanese made him a protector first, that does that say about their view on it?

There's some interesting history about that, and it mostly came down to the directors. Some of the Toho directors of the Showa Era films felt the Nuclear War or Natural Disaster messaging of the original was critical for the character, and other Toho directors did not and just wanted the movies to be fun. There seems to have been a bit of a back and forth through the movies on how heroic the character should be. While emphasizing the fun factor of the character eventually won out, in the context of most of the Japanese movies, it was less that Godzilla was a protector and more that he was the devil that humanity knew. So it was their best chance against alien Kaiju. There are only a handful of Godzilla movies, including the Monsterverse movies, where Godzilla is an outright protector.

They shot the mine from the boat with a Type 93 heavy machine gun, which is 13mm (basically a .50 cal).

Yeah I really enjoyed all the original movie moments they put in the new one, with enough new elements to make it a fresh take. Easily just as good as the original, it was a nice experience watching them back to back! (I own the original and watched it before going out to see Minus One)

This is an amazing film and a look at Japanese culture, just like the original. It's as much about pilot as it is a monster movie... is he the real monster in cowardice? Loved it.

He's actually filming a role for the second season of a show called "Cross." They announced he was cast in it a couple months ago. It's on Amazon Prime. I don't think Ahsoka S2 has officially started filming yet.

While I agree that Minus one is easily in the top 5 of Godzilla movies, I don't agree that a movie needs to be serious to be be considered "good/great". This kind of attitude feeds into the Hollywood elitism where people like Robin Williams are only praised for their serious roles and get otherwise snubbed for their other light-hearted roles. People should embrace humour, goofiness and silliness a lot more, and stop looking down on people who dedicated their life to these themes. This also applies to other genres as well.

Shin Godzilla is really a sly political satire about the ineptitude and stagnancy of the Japanese government and bureaucratic system. it's full of political in-jokes about committee-driven politics. It's also subversive in the way it makes a politician - a wonk, no less - the hero of the story, a maverick who knows how to use the system to get the resources he needs to save the country and his team are all nonconformists and outliers, which is also subversive because most Japanese heroes are pro-establishment.
