CLIP DESCRIPTION:
A bounty hunter by the name of Buckshot Roberts (Brian Keith) engages the gang in a shootout. During the fracas, Dick (Charlie Sheen) is shot dead.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this Western based loosely on actual events and people, Emilio Estevez stars as William H. Bonney (aka Billy the Kid). Sought for a petty crime in Lincoln County, Billy is taken in by John Tunstall (Terence Stamp), a British ranch owner seeking to make it in the cattle business. Tunstall employs a group of "regulators," comprised of wayward youths he's gathered over the years, to watch over his ranch; in turn, he teaches them how to read and reforms them into better men. Tunstall's business interests come into conflict with those of corrupt and murderous businessman Lawrence Murphy (Jack Palance), whose widespread connections make him a power to be reckoned with. When Tunstall won't budge from his right to pursue a living, Murphy's henchmen stage an ambush and kill him. This triggers a vow of vengeance from the quick-tempered Billy and his five fellow regulators, who are deputized to serve arrest warrants in the murder. However, when Billy decides to gun down the suspects instead of detaining them, his loyal pals become accessories in a vigilante spree to wipe the territory clean of Murphy and his web of conspirators. Soon, the supposed lawmen are on the run from bounty hunters, henchmen, and government soldiers, from all directions of the compass. This box-office hit also stars Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips, Dermot Mulroney, and Casey Siemaszko.

To me this movie is a classic from childhood. The reason I love this whole scene is because this is where the "regulators" go to the point of no return. They've lost their fatherly mentor and now their "guardian" brother has fallen, leaving the pack in the hands of "blood for blood" Billy the Kid. Charlie screams "What are we going to do? Dick just got his guts blowed out. He's our foreman!" with the foreboding music in the background. Classic scene!

Roberts levering the Winchester from the hip was actually historically accurate. As a result of the buckshot wound that gave him his nick name he couldn't raise a rifle to his shoulder in the conventional fashion. There after he always fired a rifle from the hip and most said he could do this without any noticeable loss of accuracy.

Buckshot Roberts actually wasn't looking for Regulators when he encountered them. Various parties had tried to enlist him, and to avoid the Lincoln County War he sold his homestead with plans for leaving the territory. He was actually riding to get the finalized sale documents and payment when he encountered some of the Regulators having a meal at Blazer's Mill (where the shootout occurs in this scene). He seized the opportunity. According to accounts, at one point Billy attempted to flush him out of cover and Roberts clocked him with his rifle hard enough to 'discourage' his further efforts. Brewer was shot in the head and Roberts succumbed to a nasty wound inflicted in the opening volleys of the fight. Both were buried on site, side by side, near Blazer's home.

I read somewhere that a noted historical expert on the Lincoln County Wars said Young Guns, for some of its Hollywood pizazz, was actually the most accurate depiction of the Lincoln County Wars. This scene is easily the best in the movie. Starts off with some rough-and-tumble humor but gets deadly serious. And from here the movie becomes dark.

@mckenzie.latham91
@mckenzie.latham91 10 жыл бұрын
this scene sort of captures BuckShot Roberts but not entirely, the man was a tank, however he was not a bounty hunter or hired killer as depicted in the film. In reality what happened was this: He wanted nothing to do with the war and had made no plans to leave Lincoln County, there was no evidence that he was apart of the murder of Tunstall, he just worked for Dolan and so was immediately a target for the the regulators (it helped he was one of the best fighters and men in Dolan's crew). he went to Blaze Mills to have lunch and discovered the regulators there as well (they had recently ran out of town since murdering sheriff William Brady), while sitting on a porch a regulator, Frank Coe spoke with Roberts and tried to get him to surrender himself, but Roberts feared if he surrendered he would be executed by the regulators and declined. Dick Brewer got tired of waiting and sent some more regulators to arrest Roberts who saw the heavily armed men coming for him and went for his rifle the same time as Charlie Bowdre, both men firing at once, with Buckshot getting hit in the stomach and his bullet hitting Bowdre's buckle blowing him over. Buckshot though shot in the stomach, was still able however, to take cover in a doorway and return a rate of fire agaisnt the regulators. John Middleton was badly hit in the chest, Doc Scurlock was grazed and George Coe was shot in the hand ruining his thumb and trigger finger causing him to use his other hand to fire which struck Roberts. Roberts however still fired until he was empty and then knocked the regulator McCarty out when he rushed the wounded cowboy. Roberts barricaded himself in a shed (or house can't remember that little detail). This here is where Roberts showed the character of the man he was, for even with two severe wounds (the stomach one probably fatal) and being outnumbered as well as being shot at by the regulators, he armed himself with a single-shot Springfield rifle and waited. Dick Brewer (who personally i never cared for and felt was a man out of his league in this matter) had lost his patience, frustrated that none of his men would rush the house, circled aorund the place Buckshot was hold up and from behind a wood pile fired at him. Roberts who saw the smoke from Brewer's rifle returned fire with his Springfield as soon as he saw Brewer's head, hitting him in the eye and killing him instantly. The regulators alarmed and scared by the wounds and casualties they had suffered fled the area but not before sending a doctor to see to Roberts. Roberts died the following day and was buried with Dick Brewer near the area they had fought. Sorry for this but i have been a big fan of the real wild west and the real gunfights that occurred and Buckshot Roberts is one of my favorite guys, and while i liked Young guns like most Hollywood movies it stretched the truth and or history to suit the fictional world Hollywood made for the west.

Never shows him dead but I always thought the sheer amount of lead blasting through that thin wooden door would have killed him... or he was low on ammo and decided it was smarter to stay still and quiet until they left. In reality, Roberts only went there to check the post office for correspondence he was expecting concerning some property he was selling. The regulators had a warrant for him as he was mistakenly believed to be part of the posse that murdered Tunstal. The fight started when the regulators approached Roberts and tried to arrest him.

Apparently he was waiting for a cheque - if internet banking had existed in the 1800s he might not have died.

You got it all wrong. Buckshot Roberts was there because President George Washington sent him to join with the Regulators. Before this gun fight he ran into the Cartwrights and a small group of renegade indians. He almost got himself killed. But he called an air strike just in time to finish off them bastards.

The only good scene in this entire movie is the Charlie Sheen non stop head nod when he gets shot. It’s like he’s agreeing that he just got killed. Lolol

actually buckshot Roberts was holed up in a office in blazers mill with dick brewer played by charley sheen and billy the kid and the regulaters shooting at him from the outside.roberts was already dying at this time from a shot from charly bowdres pistol.he left his ammo and pistol on a mule he was packing so he was out of ammo from his winchester.in the office he saw a rifle hanging on the wall and used it.dick brewer was shooting at him from behind a pile of logs,roberts saw where the shot came from and when he saw brewer stick his head up the second time Roberts nailed him right between the eyes and took his head off.roberts died the next morning and was buried along with dick brewer in the same coffin.even billy the kid said about Roberts that he licked his crowd to a finish.

Apparently it all went down very similarly to this where one guy fought off the regulators it was just slightly nuanced in the movie for runtime and pacing. The real fight lasted a few hours before they gave up.
