Eternally glad I never quit or gave up art, despite the pressures and the hardships.... I now get paid to paint and animate, design and create all day long, and its good pay! If there are inspiring artists out there keep fighting! It will be worth it in the long run!

What's with these people crying about the subtitle?? We non-english speaking people never complain about western movies and stuff with subtitles. Disgusting to see some lazy/ignorant people who think english is so superior that everyone has to speak english FOR THEM..

I got a little bored half way through but I'm glad I stuck with it because I loved the whole "outrunning the art devil" thing. I search far and wide for good advice on creativity on the web and it's pretty difficult to find genuinely original/helpful advise.

Great talk and I really enjoyed it. I feel this doesn't just apply to the art world, or perhaps I may be confusing the definition of art but I think what he's said is applicable to other aspects of life including what we consider work, the idea that one can express their individuality through passion. And often the only thing that is required to start this process is to simply 'just do it' and get so into it, it's no longer about getting paid, or the fear of performing poorly but it's driven by pure interest and one's desire to express themselves.

That was in response to you saying that the point of a video is not to hear or see but just to "relay information to your brain", and I said that that doesn't just happen magically which is a perfectly fine statement considering that you made it sound as if it does work like that.

What you say about wanting perfection I think is so true. I am frequently put off creative pursuits such as writing articles, stories or making videos (or writing a university essay) because I am a perfectionist, and want the end product to be completely perfect. Yet I'm fine with just posting thoughtful comments on the internet (e.g. youtube) because it's relative unimportance invokes less fear of non-perfection, and givesa sense of personal detachment and non-commitment from the final product.

I really don't care much about that, it's about the message in the end and I'm simply stating that people will find this video less attractive because they have to read subtitles in stead of just having to listen. I'll end up watching the video when I feel like reading, there's just a bigger chance that I and many others will end up skipping it. You get my point, right?

The amount of complains about subtitles is disturbing, the content is really brillant despite the fact I had to pause once in awhile. I totally agree with Kim, I'm 3rd year electrical engineering student and I bought electrical piano and started learing it about a year ago. I gotta say that it was good decision (these aint cheap) and it doesn't matter when you start but how much time you are willing to devote to the subject. If you have an urge to do something new, just do it :) .

I'm very used to reading subtitles, since English is not my first languages. But that guy talks very fast. Whenever my eyes stray away from the screen for even a second, I'm tempted to rewind. So I can read what I missed. Don't misunderstand I watch anime in Japanese with subtitles, no problem. He's just a very fast talker. :)

Great talk! Very inspiring! This reminds me of those who have been working hard busting their asses off to get a diploma/degree/masters/phd and their only dream in life is to 'get a job'. I mean, they have been enslaved by teachers/lecturers their whole life and their dream is to continue to be enslaved by a boss? To have a little artist in us is the way to go, I am a school teacher but my life doesn't stop here as, deep inside, I'm pursuing two arts (writing and magic). The adventure continues!

This was filmed in Korea with koreans as the intended audience ,if the conference was done in english there's likely people in the audience who wouldn't understand it.There's a few international ted talks done in languages other than english, they just never get uploaded to this channel but other ones,in fact this video was already uploaded on another channel, it seems TED wanted to share it with an english speaking audience and decided to add subtitles and uploaded it here

Just so you all know, even for me, a South Korean who have been born and lived here for 30 years, this gentleman's talking speed is way too fast. I saw his another lecture before and he talked slow enough in that clip. I guess he had to talk fast this time to finish within the given time limit. I just hope you guys to not fight over the speaking speed and subtitles anymore. He had to talk like it, in his own language, of course. It would be cruel to blame him for that. Let's just focus his message, which is worth to spend 10 minuets of your life trying to read subtitles, instead.

of course. but you disregard that "the message" includes not only the text, but also the tone and the body language. only about 20% of communication is verbal (and that includes tone), meaning the actual text probably only accounts for like 10% of the message.
