Tad, I glad you found it useful. I wonder how many of these reels have been messed up due to the gears getting misaligned. To the naked eye, you can’t see the difference in tooth spacing but it’s there. I’m guessing it was done to vary the amount of time spool stays in certain positions to make the line lay more evenly. Great idea but if you don’t know they did it, it can bind up the reel.

This is a very fine reel though not quite as popular as the Shimano 6500. I am a serious fan of Shimano reels and have collected the vintage 1970s MLZ reels. My favorites are the two SSG7000 rear drag reels that I have. I caught my largest fish ever while surf fishing with that giant rear drag reel. Altogether I have 12 Shimano reels. This reel has a helical gear which is why it must be synchronized. I would have greased the part of the pinion where it inserted into that holder inside the reel. You did a first rate job on this one Rick!

I was glad to get this one done. Once I finished it I got to get the spincast reels completed for the kids down the street. They will be coming by to get them tonight.

Wow, what a great video!! I had seen another video by another reel repair (KZbin video) took it all apart and I wasn’t able to quite put it back together. When I saw your video everything made sense and all the parts aligned and fit. Especially the explanation of the main gear lining up with the rotor gear that goes up and down. Thank you very much for your very detailed explanation! The reel is working like brand new again! 😊 I have two extra washers that I don’t recall where they go from the previous tear down. Is there a way I could send you a picture and you tell me if they are necessary? And if so, where do they belong?
@youngmartinsreels53144 ай бұрын
Without the actual reel and a schematic in hand, I’m not likely to be able to tell you where the washers go. However, my first guess would be on the gear side of the main gear. Often these shim washers are left out by mistake. Another place could be on top of the front main bearing for the pinion gear. You can usually figure it out by test fitting the washers over the shafts. They will usually just fit with no side to side movement.

Looking at these front drag baitrunner reels I can see there is this D version (gold spool) and there is an OC version (silver spool). The D costs a bit more than the OC. Do you happen to know what the difference is between them besides the obvious gold anodised spool ?

Great video, quite confident i'm able to service my reel now. Just wondering do you use a special kind of grease and oil?
@youngmartinsreels53144 ай бұрын
I’m happy with any grease or oil as long as it’s made for fishing reels.

Hi,please how can i swap handle from right side to left,i bouth shimano oceanic with handle on right side,so i am in problem...do i need special handle??
@youngmartinsreels53146 ай бұрын
If it it is made like this reel you simply rotate the handle counter clockwise with the anti reverse engaged. It should unscrew. Remove the handle cap from the left hand side, then screw in the handle in the same counterclockwise direction you used to unscrew it from the right side. The handle should have both clockwise and counterclockwise threads. Move the cap to the other side of the reel.

Not stupid, you just didn’t have any experience with it. Now that you do, you know how to do it again. Fish On!
