Young Martin’s Reels was created to honor my dad Martin B. Stivers of Louisville KY. He was an avid fisherman and repaired thousands of fishing reels in his lifetime. I spent numerous hours watching him do so, but I have forgotten most of what he taught me. Now that he is gone, and I find myself in need of reel repair, so I am learning how it is done and trying my best to pass it on.
If I can be of assistance, feel free to contact me Rick48cj2a@yahoo.com
I would also like to thank Dennis Kuntz of 2nd Chance Tackle. His videos have helped to fill in the gaps in my “reel” knowledge. Without his KZbin videos I’m afraid Young Martin’s Reels would not exist.

So am I lol great job showing your best on taking the reel apart and putting it back together. Not many guys pull out that baitrunner out I’m working on ten of them right now and my customer wants one of his bait Runner lever replaced so it was nice to see how it was done. Thank you

I make shim washers out of milk jug plastic to raise the spool height. Works really well for me. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Dan, once again you’ve saved the day. I’ve been trying to come up with something to make the washers from. As simple and easy as that idea is, I was unable to make that leap on my own. Now that you’ve gotten me this far, I’m thinking detergent bottles might even be better. I’ll be experiencing with this idea. Thanks, you are amazing.

That was almost scary when you took that cam out. I found myself going back to the point where you took it out to see if you would remember which way it went back together. I have to take a lot of pictures to remember that kind of stuff because i'm always afraid I will reassemble things backward or upside down. That was a really gutsy thing to do Rick, so thanks for showing that as I am sure someone will eventually need to see that.

Dan, I’m pretty sure I was mad more afraid than you. Since this isn’t my reel I was visualizing having to find him another one, just because I wanted to show how to do it. When I pulled out the washer only to find it was a cam, I thought, “OH NO! You’re in trouble boy.” Once I calmed down I examined where it went and why. Then it was just a matter of fitting it back together. Not an easy task. If I ever get one of these reels of my own, I might shoot another video of the complete disassembly and reassembly. There has to be an easier way to put it back than what I did but I didn’t want to risk Ken’s reel anymore than I already had. Overall I’m happy with the way it turned out. The hardest part was those crappy C clips on the axle shaft.

Rick, I wouldn’t touch this reel with a 10’ pole! These reels are notoriously complicated. This 6500 is supposed to be one of the best bait feeders aavsilsble today. I only have a smaller Okuma Avenger ABF40 bait feeder that is much simpler to work on. My two Shimano SSG7000 rear drag saltwater reels also have those two c-clips on the axle shaft. They are truly a pain in the “@#%”! I ended up buying some extra C-clips. You made this look far easier than it actually is. It gets real interesting when there is something wrong in that bait feeder mechanism that you need to repair. Great video Rick!

Chris, I think that if this were my reel I would replace the C clips with E clips. I believe that would make them much easier to get on and off. Those super thin C clips are just to fine to get hold of. I have that same Okuma Baitfeeder and I don’t think I’ve done a video of it yet. I think I did service it last year and it hasn’t been fishing since. I’d really like to get into the rest of the baitrunner mechanism on this Shimano but since it wasn’t mine I felt I had risked it enough already. Maybe one day I’ll have my own. I’m watching EBay.

Steve, so far over the years I’ve found few things I couldn’t put back together. One was a timer for a washing machine. The other one was a hundred year old pendulum clock. I was sure I could put it back together but I was wrong. I sent it to a clock repair shop for assembly. That turned out for the best since it had three bad parts in it. After a year of fishing reel repair under my belt, I’ve been contemplating taking on another clock. I’m happy to take on more reels. If Ken keeps supplying them, I’ll keep servicing them.

@@youngmartinsreels5314 l always wanted to be a watch maker, I love the art of that process. Then I realized I didn’t have a steady hand or good enough vision. My two favorite KZbin videos are reel and mechanical watch repair. Keep them coming. I really enjoy them.

Steve, have you ever watched wristwatch revival on you tube. I love watching him rescue watches. After watching him I went out and bought some EBay watches to attempt. Unfortunately, I didn’t do enough research first and only bought watch frames. I retired my watch repair dreams. Besides I have plenty of reels to keep me busy. I found another 50 reels last week I forgot that I had.

They are very nice smooth running reels. They can handle a lot of abuse. I’d you keep one serviced, they should last for many years of carefree operation.
