Companies in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s actually paid Scandinavian families to migrate to work on fishing boats. The people had been fisherman for generations on the North Sea so it was easy to make the transition to the Bering sea. This young woman is probably the twentieth generation of her family to work on a fishing boat. What a proud lineage.

We had a good set gill netting last year, made a couple grand in about 8 hours... and most of that time was unloading fish and taking it to the fish house. The excitement and thrill was through the roof. When the pelicans are dive bombing your net, and the mud boiling from the fish, you know shes stuck full and its gonna be a good one. I couldn't imagine the level these guys were on when they started pulling those pots, knowing 10's of thousands of dollars were to be made by even the lowest on the totem pole.

A $1.8m season sounds amazing until you realize how ridiculously expensive it is to run one of these operations. It's probably about half of that by the time you account for the operating expenses of fuel, repairs, bait, food for the crew, etc. Then what's left gets divided between roughly 20 people on a ship that size at varying "share" rates depending on seniority and how much the captain likes you. And that's their pay for the entire season. It's a good amount of money for only a few months of work, but these guys aren't getting rich by any stretch of the imagination.

He still deserves to captain a boat that he is part owner of. Sig acts like Edgar is a step child and not his father's son. Even before the legal problems, Sig has treated him like that. It is about money. Not on the show means no money. But hey, maybe Edgar is alright with not being captain.

Some people say opening a tin can upside down is bad luck. You can't deny superstition, everyone does it, even you, I am sure. Some athletes have rituals where they have to put on the right shoe first, some have to tape their hockey clubs a certain amount of times, some have to listen to the same song before starting and so on.

Ean Your Taste Buddy this was from the days of pirating, having a woman on board was a distraction for the men, months at sea and a woman on board is going to cause trouble, I think the superstition was made up by the captains because they didn’t want to deal with rape on their ship. 😐

Have you ever had a chest x ray at the hospital? Or even just a dental x-ray? Or flown on a plane above 30k feet? If so, you have already received a higher radiation dose than you'd get from eating pacific seafood for the rest of your life, even if you lived to be a thousand. Radiation, it ain't scary with a little bit of education.
