Companies in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s actually paid Scandinavian families to migrate to work on fishing boats. A $1.8m season sounds amazing until you realize how ridiculously expensive it is to run one of these operations. It's probably about half of that by the time you account for the operating expenses of fuel, repairs, bait, food for the crew, etc. Then what's left gets divided between roughly 20 people on a ship that size at varying "share" rates depending on seniority and how much the captain likes you. And that's their pay for the entire season. It's a good amount of money for only a few months of work, but these guys aren't getting rich by any stretch of the imagination.

Ean Your Taste Buddy this was from the days of pirating, having a woman on board was a distraction for the men, months at sea and a woman on board is going to cause trouble, I think the superstition was made up by the captains because they didn’t want to deal with rape on their ship. 😐

Mandy is true Norwegian and a helluva Capt. You did good Sig.
@blackhawks81H4 жыл бұрын
Isn't this the same year that sig had a second heart attack, and his one brother pled guilty to sexual assault, and the other brother fell and hit his head so hard he had a seizure, the turbos on the ship fucked up and basically caught fire. Etc?..... Maybe not the luckiest year he ever had.

She's going to be better than her father, and also knows how to build good working relationships with the younger captains like Jake. When the old guard retire the youth will step in and it looks like the ships will be in good hands.

has anyone done a test for radiation on the seafood coming out of the north pacific considering the radiation flowing up from Japan. probably not

Have you ever had a chest x ray at the hospital? Or even just a dental x-ray? Or flown on a plane above 30k feet? If so, you have already received a higher radiation dose than you'd get from eating pacific seafood for the rest of your life, even if you lived to be a thousand. Radiation, it ain't scary with a little bit of education.

Seriously? Crab is delicious. You can get dungeness crab really easily in Calfornia, but your first experience with crab should be Alaskan King Crab legs. When they're done right, you'll understand why they're so popular. Go to a good restaurant and try them - and raise a glass to remember the work these guys put into catching them :)
