On Mother's Day 2002, Dacy and Tim discovered that their first born, Callie, was born deaf. Dacy sang to Callie but found herself questioning how she could make the baby feel loved when Callie could not hear her. The first day that Callie had her cochlear implant activated, her eyes were "sparkly" with excitement and wonder. She was 12 months old. When Dacy and Tim had their second child, Lexie, they found out she also suffered from severe hearing loss. The Zacharias family verified their daughter's cochlear implant candidacy and activated her hearing implant without hesitation. Hearing has nothing to do with love. Even hearing babies understand love mainly through touch - being hugged, cuddled, stroked, etc. A deaf baby knows his or her parents' love in exactly the same way.

I’m deaf and I got cochlear implants when I was around 7 years old. Before I got the surgery, I used hearing aids but as my hearing got worse, they stopped helping so my parents looked for other alternatives. They had also been learning sign language at the time so they could communicate with me. Then they found out about cochlear implants, and I want to mention that they did not force it on me. I’m extremely grateful for them as they help me navigate life easier and hear everything. So they talked about this possibility with me, and I tell you, I wanted them without a doubt. I really wanted to hear so my parents decided to go through with the surgery. And after it, it’s been a blessing to have them because now I can talk with other people, listen in class, enjoy music, dance, and many other things. I can see why this video would be controversial. From a person who has cochlear implants and this experience, I would say that the only thing I wish the mother had done was wait until she could ask her children if they wanted cochlear implants or not. She went through the surgery for both of them without knowing their opinions or thoughts once they got older. Maybe they wouldn’t have wanted them at all but since they already got them, they can’t do anything about it. So waiting until she got their opinions may have been a better choice. Then I also agree with most people about it being a bit insensitive and offensive that she thought that her baby wouldn’t be able to feel her love without sound. There are many ways to express love than just hearing. Body language, acts of service, sign language, writing, etc. You can sign I love you instead of speaking it. You can read it. You can feel it. It doesn’t have to be through hearing. Anyways, those are my opinions. I hope they were intriguing! 🤟

I am sorry, I understand what you are saying, but, it is evident from the video the girls are fine with it. I have become profoundly deaf and got bilateral cochlear and it is marvelous to hear up to normal clearly with no distortions as was with the aids. I hear insects walking. I work in cabinetry and can converse over the noise. I can see in this video the girls are thankful to hear everything with clarity. I read your point is for them to learn sign language, which is a language, but also it is its own community. That would be fine if that is a choice. The girls have grown old enough they can still make that choice if it is their point of reference. It is better yet to have both worlds and be able to benefit from both.

that's whats been frustrating me about researching them even though im hearing, i havent been able to find someone who was born deaf and had a cochlear implant any older than 5 years old, i want to hear a mature perspective on the experience, and also an account of what hearing for the actual first time is like from someone who's at least old enough to voice their interpretation of it. i can completely understand why the deaf community would advocate for waiting until the child can make the choice.

@@bugglemagnum6213 I was always hearing and late in life became profoundly deaf. As you say, you would want to postpone a child to be able to hear. Give them their choice. I profoundly disagree. All the cochlear does is bypass where the deafness is occurring and restore to the same natural nerve to restore hearing to near normal as it has been for me. To cut off a child from hearing -- with the hearing, parents would be a travesty against the child and the opportunities to better learn, earlier better. It has proven its value in opening life experiences. If later the child learns the desire for learning the deaf community, that is still their own option.

I'd just like you to know, I'm 26 and deaf, my dad is 55 and deaf, my girlfriend is hearing and loves me and my son, she would also love us if we were hearing, people need to be more accepting , why should I make my son get a cochlear implant, I have a really good friend who had one and had an accident and it affected him terribly, when he's older he can decide for himself, but he will always be taught that hr is he exact same as everyone else, what about people who and are blind, what would you do to "fix" them? haven't you heard of you can't miss what you've never had? I've never been able to hear, and my life has been amazing, I've always worked, got a beautiful girlfriend and 3 amazing kids? I wouldn't change anything about my life..

Why is it so hard for you to accept not every one is born the same? why do you think because you can hear your life is so much better ? my step grandad went deaf at very young age, then became blind at 40 year old, and when though he had his hearing and sight it hasn't made him any different from the person he was before, my best friend of 22 years became deaf at 4 year old after having meningitis, he started with hearing aids and decided he no longer wanted to use them, he spent the last 22 years deaf, has a fiancee a nice house and a brilliant job, I just don't understand why you are so judgemental about it, I are no longer going to going to reply, going to go to work, then come home and spend my night with my girlfriend and 3 kids, two who can hear and my profoundly deaf son. This is beautiful, absolutely beautiful. I don't know what it's like to be born deaf, but I do want to share that I know what it's like to have a hearing loss and to live with someone else who has one too. My mom has cochlear implants, specifically the Cochlear Nucleus with the Nucleus 5 processors. She got implants 8 (almost 9) years ago. She has had a hearing loss since the age of 2 which progressed further [she is 40, almost 41 now]. I have hearing aids due to a moderately-severe high frequency hearing loss, which may or may not progress. Our hearing losses are genetic. I love seeing people who have benefit from them

We do sign some, we are wanting to learn more though. We do pretty well speaking with our family (I have a brother and my dad is at home with us), my dad signs but my brother doesn't. My mom hears amazingly well with her implants, considering, and I have been doing well with my hearing aids as well. Although, as I said, we are definitely wanting to learn more sign. I am also planning to take ASL as my foreign language in college.

In terms of the controversy, there doesn't have to be one! Cochlear implants are an option for those that wish to pursue it. If people prefer to not use implants and learn ASL, that's acceptable too. What's not acceptable is criticism on both sides. Every person and situation is different and it's best to do what works for yourself rather than wasting time arguing and judging against the other side.

I'm going to get a Cochlear implant Baha for my right ear... I can't hear very well in both ears due to ear infections since I was a kid... I had 2 reconstructive surgeries on my right ear but still can't hear very well... The doctor told me that I'm a perfect candidate for the Cochlear implant... The difference is remarkable, prior to these cochlear implants I believe the only alternative was signing and speech therapy which is limited to the range of sound on the spectrum that a child or adult is able to hear. It seems as though some people don't have access to therapy even when it appears that the cochlear implants are best used in conjunction with speech and language therapy which limits the clarity of speech when they communicate.

You are limiting what is not said. One factor is, the mother is totally only familiar with the hearing world. She is NOT limited or incapable to love the child. The cochlear has the benefit of restoring the loss of hearing only from the natural pathway. Cochlear bypasses the outer, middle, and first level of the inner ear (hair cells). Hearing is restored by accessing the same cochlear nerve to the brain where hearing is accomplished. The one limitation is the outer hair cells are still missing. My experience is, my hearing is close, very close to normal, only limited by the loss of some modulation from the missing cells. It is so great to hear the range of the normal environment and verbal interaction.

Listen to what is said rather than what you want to hear. She said she felt a sense of loss of how will she make this child feel loved when she can't hear her. That is not the same as saying a mother can't express love without a cochlear implant. As Robert and hundreds of others took from this. hearing is an enormous part of our lives that's a fact and NO, sign language is Not just as good. Try sign in the dark. Or try find someone who can actually sign. Few and far between. Hearing loss is significant, hard on parents and impacts lives. So finding solutions to restore hearing are important but I wish we had better solutions.

Reading through the comments it seems that people who are part of a deaf community and advocates of deaf culture are angry about CI tech and angry at "normals", is that right? If so, is it more than just resentment at people not doing enough to accommodate you by, for example, learning sign? It sounds like there's an underlying fear of the deaf community losing numbers in the generations to come but I don't understand why the fear and anger are there.

being Deaf does not always have to be seen as a disability, and it is not the same as being blind. There is sign language and cued speech, and on top of that a whole culture of people who, when asked, would not accept any kind of hearing aid. It can be accepted and enjoyed, or alternatively a person can choose to hear, if they wish. It is their body and they can do whatever they feel matters whether you're sick of it or not.

Carry a rescue inhaler? Have diabetes? I wouldn't say so. When you tell someone they'r "broken" it sounds like you are saying they are less than you. I have a listening disorder called Auditory Processing Disorder, which means, I hear fine; but the sounds get jumbled up and when the sounds reach my brain, it doesn't make sense. I use sign language in noisy places to keep my sounds straight. SL is a natural language. CIs will wipe out Deaf culture one day. I will morn the loss.

My only issue is that this video makes being deaf look like a problem, which it isn't. At all. It is beautiful to gain hearing, but it isn't such a loss to not have it either. This video definitely should've been done differently. My deaf boyfriend and me don't feel so strongly about thinking "how can I show love if they can't hear me?" He can't hear anything but he functions like a normal person. The only thing ONLY thing deaf people can't do is hear. That is all.

Its plenty of use to people who are willing to learn. There are entire deaf communities out there! Family members learn to sign, friends lean to sign. If it seems like an inconvenience to you, then by all means dont learn. But its a bit thickheaded and rude to assume that deaf people would all be better off with implants.

There are pockets of deaf people all over. People do understand them, being deaf isn't a bad thing at all. The deaf community has their own culture. I do feel they should have put an Effort to learn sign language.

People act like deaf people are at a loss why is it that when a child is 5 hours old they have already failed something. For some reason people have it in their heads that you have to be what society see's as 'normal' when really as long as you are happy why does anything else like if you can hear or not matter. I don't see it as hearing loss but as deaf gain

I wouldn't even consider getting CI if I knew any deaf folks. On other hand I'm not so sure I want to hear most of the folks I know... Yup,I'm anti-social and very deaf:)

It seems like she was doing this for her more than for them. She didn’t want to go through the “struggle” of attending ASL classes because it probably didn’t fit into her busy schedule, she didn’t want the judgmental looks going her way when she signed with her kids, or having to spend all that money for accommodations. What a selfish woman. Hearing isn’t some miracle, you know. I never liked it, but I can’t ever turn it off.

Dude I am almost fluent in ASL and want to know how long it took me 1 year if your child is born deaf you would be almost fluent by the time they were 1 or 1 and a half it's really not that difficult to learn how to communicate with your own child

Stop, just stop. What is actually yogur problem. Most of the deaf and hearing impaired culture survive with this. The communicate through a beautiful language in hand motions and facial expressions. Stop relying on technology to fix everything in your life. You should be a good parent, but not being able to express love is giving up. Don’t give up.

By the way I think the cochlear implant is a great idea. However, this mother gave it to her daughters to make HER life easier, not theirs.

teagan feldman She didn't say anything directly about you. Why take offense? Being the parent of a deaf child puts you through a roller coaster of emotions. This mother had every right to feel what she felt. I remember wondering how I would express my love to my daughter as well.
