He was just sentenced to 5 years yesterday for conspiracy to commit theft by deception. It seems his sentence is suspended if he completes drug rehab. If he violates probation he'll go straight to prison. He also agreed to testify against his co-defendants. It seems to me that it was because he agreed to lie that he gave "his last $20 for gas"

I'm not good at not getting emotional about story's like this but I must say my faith has just been restored in people. You know so many of us don't really understand the sacrifice, hardship,hunger,thirst and despair and the grief and horror as well as the uncertainty of warfare not knowing when your going to die! Love this story! I'm a ten year submarine service veteran with PTSD, and life has been a real struggle at times - but I've been able to live a somewhat comfortable life. I try to help homeless veterans any chance I get, whether it's a little bit of money or some food. Take time out of your busy schedules to actually speak with these people, and you'll hear some amazing stories. It's a shame that our government is so quick to send our young people off to war, and then simply ignore them when they return. The suicide rate for veterans is extremely high, and I wish our government would actually CARE about them, rather than saying "thank you for your service" over and over again.

What an amazing story, this woman and the rest of the people who helped this man should be proud of themselves. I really don't understand how this could have been let happen in the first place though. I'm not even American, but the fact that veterans who put their lives on the line in defense of their country can end up homeless really makes my blood boil. Especially someone who is a qualified paramedic and firefighter. Veterans should be taken care of financially at least in some capacity for life.

About 32 years ago when just a small child our daughter began praying, "Jesus to send angel to help people, that never had a house and what had to sleep in boxes"... I used to work as a debt collector for a bank and I ALWAYS cry when I hear people saying they're homeless. Young, old, men, women, veterans, people with disability - sadly, it's not an isolated case. I wasn't in a better situation a couple of years ago, but now I am thankful that I have a job. I try to live within my means to avoid debts. I also make an effort to save even a small amount for the rainy days. I hope and pray that they'll be given a chance to start over so they can get back on their feet.
