Hey all! Sorry for a bit of a delay in the upload of this video. We've been traveling back to New Zealand from the US and missed our usual upload time-slot, so sorry about that! I hope you enjoy this video and that it was worth the wait. We will be back home to rest up for a week, before jumping over to Australia for a tour, where we will be driving from Melbourne to Brisbane and filming lots of great tiny house stories along the way. After Australia, we will be doing another big loop of New Zealand, so get ready for lots more stories from down under in the near future. Thanks for watching, and enjoy the video! - Bryce

She is so fortunate, to have her dear dad help build her tiny house! It's nicely finished and decorated too! One no-no I did notice though, is the use of OSB paneling for the shell, and that stuff is hardly green or non-toxic. The adhesives that are used to bind the wood flakes together contain formaldehyde. Any bit of moisture contacting that stuff, and it turns to mush, and, the black mould loves it! It's definitely a building material that I won't be using for my tiny house build.
@DannyBear706 жыл бұрын
^ I agree that the show focuses a lot more on the looks than on the functionality and construction supplies. I like the show, but it could be improved: Plans, material lists, square footage, R-factors, etc. For instance, nothing was said about the R-value of what-ever odd insulation was used. Insulation under the floor? Something without skirting probably a must for the winters of Colorado. How to find the "right" trailer? Weight distribution, axel load, etc, are all very important, at least to me...
@stuartsutherland76645 жыл бұрын

It truly is a very nice tiny house. That being said, it appears to me that the tiny house movement has turned into a beauty contest. What I mean is it seems that they are getting more and more expensive and there is a point which you might as will own a home for the money you're spending. I understand in some cases the trailer that it is built on is most of the expense, but as much as the reclaimed material that she claims to use and she said she did a lot of the labor with friends and family, $40,000 is a lot of money. I've been a builder most of my adult life and I'm pretty confident that I could build that size with decent materials for about 10,000 . Assuming I can find an old camper and use the trailer and to build on for around $4000. or $5000. And I will admit that the cost of the compost toilet that extravagant air system in that little space heater adds up a good amount of the cost.

Love the idea that more people are going sustainable. Wonder how the Colorado state's new mandate that "international building codes" were adopted to force everyone to hook up to the grid instead of using solar?
@livingbig6 жыл бұрын
I haven't heard anything about that mandate. Fortunately, if it is a rule it doesn't seem to be well enforced as we visited lots of places that were off-the-grid in Colorado. It seems to be a bit of a hot-spot for sustainable living. Sad to hear that the local government isn't making it easy for people.
@wanderingman89216 жыл бұрын
Why is anyone surprised that the government is not on their side? The government is in it's own side.
@chowe96 жыл бұрын
Seattle is forcing utility hookup as well... FYI the Morrison's from Tiny House Build have updated the International Building code with section Q that provides a definition for tiny house.
@xxxdroidmonkeyxxx6 жыл бұрын
You do realize that having to hook up to the grid system doesn’t mean you can’t have solar power, right? In fact, one of the biggest selling points of solar power, aside from making free energy is making money off of it by selling excess energy to the power company which can’t do if you’re not hooked up to the grid. Furthermore, solar isn’t as reliable as a primary power source in many northern regions so being hooked up to the grid is probably smart to avoid black outs during winter months. Also, tiny homes can very easily pass off as RVs and thus won’t be subject to those mandates. It’s good to know the little details before getting your panties up in a bunch.
@manfredschmalbach90236 жыл бұрын
I'd subsume that the biggest issue forced hookups are meant to control is sewage/black water, especially with the threat resulting from using a drinking water well probably situated right beneath Your neighbour's trickling field. Community authorities do have a certain responsibility in terms of waterquality/contagion control; a severe risk of cholera from wrongful riddance of sewage is something no community can (and should, for that matter!) ignore. I am no master in permaculture, but I do see even greywater trickling critical, the more the denser a community becomes. When it comes to electrical: having a connection to the grid doesn't mean You do have to use their current, You could still produce everything You need for Your own anyway. It might even be possible to make an extra buck by producing MORE than You need and feed it back. In harsh climates the way You produce the warmth You desperately need to stay alive all winter might be an issue as well, for burning wasteoil, plastic garbage or any other cheap "fuel" officially defined as "non-fuel" for a reason might cause severe issues within a neighbourhood/community nobody should be allowed to cause unchallenged, so having a certain amount of overview what people are doing might not be the worst idea in the first place. While I definitely think codes CAN be (and often are) used to enforce ridiculous restrictions, aiming for extortion money only to feed the big fish even more (the code- und HOA-problem). That is an educational problem (lots of officials don't know shit in terms of ecology) as well as a systemic problem (using the grid as an extortion tool to feed apparatchiks) Tiny housing became (at least partly) a thing subsequent to the bankster crisis, so some of the creative ideas do rely on desperate ways to find by far cheaper housing than the usual suburban McMansion would cost. Thus, not all ideas are as sustainable and environmental friendly as the very nice tiny houses Bryce fantasticly finds for his viewers.

I didn't hear any mention. Land in Boulder costs a FORTUNE. I didn't even realize there was any left. The average home is around/just over a half million.
@manfredschmalbach90236 жыл бұрын
sophia thebirdy Land in Boulder costs a fortune like in many other places these days (this is a worldwide problem ... we are already over 7 billion and the planet doesn't expand fast enough, in terms of big bang ... 😂 ) The solution could be not owning the land but thoroughly thought through longterm lease it from an owner, or share the land with likeminded people so You buy it together, or go anywhere else where there are no people yet to start there from scratch. Or You start being part of the ratrace and buy it for what sellers charge no matter how You'll earn it back, and for example lease it out to other people for a monthly fortune to serve Your bankster via mortgage. All that isn't a promenade (German sayin' ... 😬 ), but there are no other options I'm afraid.

I like this house; it's very nice and functional at the same time. The stove looks like the kind of stove we use in Europe (or used before induction). I have a practical question: Since there is no vestibule/hallway in these tiny houses, don't they lose a lot of heat in winter, especially if you have several people living in it (especially with kids) who come in and out of the house? I am no architect, but I'd be afraid of the cold getting in every time you open the door. I'd appreciate any insight from someone who has been living like this in a cold climate for some time. Thank you.

Zdeněk Benedikt Good point. I assume that they close the doors fast to avoid heat loss.

I live in a smaller home (but not a tiny one) about 850 sq ft. I have no vestibule or hallway, or anything like it. When the door opens, it stays about the same temp, maybe the heat might kick on if the door isn't shut in under a minute. I have seen solutions on pinterest that involve a large, heavy curtain in a semi-circle around the door. That way it is also malleable, and you can hook it on the wall when it's nice out.

The design and interior design is beautiful and tasteful. In some of the videos, there is a recurring theme of daughters and fathers building together. I love that, and wish my father were around to be inspired by these people.

It's interesting to hear how liberating it is for many tiny home owners "to break free from the system"; only to find they're living on someone else's land, using most of their utilities! Many areas restrict you from "living" in a shed or camper. Unfortunately you're still having to be on city utilities or a septic system (which totally defeats the tiny movement). You're better off to buy a smaller home and park your tiny home on it. You can't really escape the government! I feel these set backs/restrictions are why most people don't find this lifestyle appealing. Nomadic van dwelling is more to my liking. You don't need special licensing, insurance etc. Either way, you're faced with similar challenges...

You speak as if you knew. Which you don't. I don't need a septic system, or even water. Soon, I'll be off the grid entirely. As will she. Your feelings are just that. My feelings are that if you can't say something nice, and well, I just can't say anything about you.
