(I'm sure you already know but this is for the viewers who don't) Alireza usually plays Karo Cann or Najdorf when he plays black. It's only recently that he's started playing e5 in response to 1. e4. But he doesn't play it often. So yes, it is actually fairly easy to prepare against Alireza's openings because he sticks to the same ones. In white he usually plays Italian or Ruy Lopez so again he doesn't spring surprise openings. But it speaks for the depth of his knowledge and understanding of his chosen openings that he still plays the same ones and creates variations within them and takes his opponents out of their prep against him. The first game you picked is a perfect example of this - he started with his usual opening, then reacted to what his opponent was doing and it became wild from there. When I teach family members or friends openings, I like to follow up with a game or two from GMs who used this opening to great effect (to inspire my loved ones to learn the goddamn opening and not give up), and Alireza is my fave to pick for Karo Cann and Ruy Lopez. I think he's a perfect example of how you can still play the same opening and be creative with it.

There's still a tough road ahead. Alireza has yet to win against Ding, Fabiano or Magnus in a classical game, which is a major roadblock that he has yet to clear. Guys like Nakamura also had a 2819 rating at one point, but he only ever beat Magnus once while losing 14 times, and that will eventually kill all of your momentum and confidence. We'll see whether Alireza is the chosen one soon enough.

He's gonna play with Nepo who has nothing special about him. Such a boring underdog to root for him to even become a WCC. All the other stuff like Kasparov, Fischer, Tal & bla bla bla are just history." Then there's a new boy who is young and he was around for a while improving slowly but surely. There's some clips of him talking to arbiters and cameramen. Some flag changing news going around. but suddenly he rises from the ashes, breaks some records, becomes no2 and wins a torney, qualifies for candidates and now everyone is rooting for him, talking about how is gonna be the future world champion. It looks even more exciting than the netflix series. Kind of a real-time history and stuff. That's exactly the type of hype chess community needed for a long time. And now we are here!

We have seen some pretty outrageous 2800 levels before, though; you have to be able to hold it over time. Still, I would no longer bet against him. He's got youth, talent, motivation and hasn't been world champion for twelve years (assuming Carlsen wins). We'll know even more if he keeps climbing since both Gary and Magnus were top player in the world before they were WC. Can't help remembering that Caruana moment, though, when he seemed unbeatable and won everything--and now he's just, well, dumbly good but not Magnus.

Its almost like this kid knows Magnus is a human computer so he's rewriting the computer honestly its beyond genius. He's quite literally rewriting everything. So cool to watch. Intuitive, creative, and I believe may have found the only way to overtake Magnus, not saying its gonna happen but this type of play is what it will take.

Crazy thinking that Alireza has only been playing Chess for 9 years. That's an average of more than 200 rating points per year lmao.

This is why I love the caro kann vs 1.e4. Straight forward opening and middle game. As long as you don't blunder a piece, you're typically just gonna bring the game to an endgame and win it out that way. If your opponent tries anything fancy, you can usually shut it down pretty easily. Now I just need people to stop playing 1.d4 against me cause you should probably know 3 different defenses vs 1.d4. When there's 7 variations of each open... That's a lot of learning I don't want to learn! Took 2 years just to learn 4 different lines of Caro-Kann and 4 different lines of the London system...

After his loss to Magnus in R6 of Norway Chess, he finished that tournament with 4 wins in a row. If you count the last 4 games of NC then 11 games in Grand Swiss and now 9 games of European Ch, his score is +17-1=6 and and he has gained 50 rating points which is insane for a +2700 player.
