Another great video , Rick. Herter's was quite a place in its day. I have their 1978 catalog. All kinds of cool stuff in it , including taxidermy supplies which was a hobby of mine years ago. I never actually ordered anything from them as the cost of bringing anything up from the USA was , and is now, prohibitive. You know....you have to REALLY want something ! But I sure do love looking at the old literature. When I was a kid in the late 60's and early 70's , you could write for all kinds of catalogs and stuff. I remember getting a sample of Cutter insect repellant. Those printed catalogs are getting to be a thing of the past, I guess. Thanks for posting these videos.

The closest I ever got to those catalogs was the ads in the back of Hounds & Hunting magazine. I might buy an old catalog off of EBay just for the experience. I’m glad you liked the video. I certainly enjoyed finding the reel and fixing it up. I’d be surprised if it’s seen action in the last 30 years.

Rick - I really like the ability of your camera to zoom in so closely to show the detail inside the reel. It really helps to see the fine detail inside the reel.

On my next video I’m going to cut my frame rate down from 60 to 30 frames per second. The resolution will stay the same so I’m hoping it will stay clear. The only time that frame rate should come into play is when things move quickly. The raw video for these videos was almost 25 GB. It took me almost 2 days to get it transferred onto my computer then 3 hours to export and upload, once editing was done. The completed, uploaded files were still 2.5 GB per 30 minute video.

@@youngmartinsreels5314 I do almost all my video recording with a GoPro Hero 4. I set it on 1080p at 30 fps. It keeps the files at a manageable size for upload without sacrificing resolution. Most people watch KZbin on a laptop so 1080p is plenty good for that small of a screen. The only time it suffers is when the video is viewed on a large screen TV designed for 4K video.

I tried a GoPro but it seems they are made for very clear distance shooting. It didn’t work very well for up close Macro work. So far this phone camera is working far better than anything else I’ve tired.

I know people who used to work for George Herter. They say he was known for his ability to sling a lot of BS. He wrote a few books that he marketed through his company. I read them all and came away thinking he was really full of himself. George was a legend in his own mind. Despite that, I wish I could have met him. It would have been fun to engage him in conversation.

Do you ever use fine steel wool to help clean stubborn rust or dried hard grease? Do you have any idea how difficult this bail spring would be for a half blind guy like me? I caught it! I was talking to you again. LOL I would have cleaned the post for the line roller and oiled it before I installed the roller and attached the bail. Should you have lubricated that sleeve? The handle reminds me of a French Bretton or Ru Mer. You did a masterful job on the resurrection of this reel. It was made the year I was born. Cabalas is owned by Bass Pro Shops as is Offshore Angler. Great videos Rick! - Chris
